WHAT’S SAID, AND UNSAID, IN THE PAPERS – by Donal Kennedy

I’ve been an avid reader of all sorts of papers for at least 70 years. Originally I read only newspapers published in Dublin, with the exception of THE IRISH TIMES. But Radio Eireann only came on the air on weekdays at 5 PM and I was  familiar with the BBC from birth.

From about 1953 my brother used buy THE UNITED IRISHMAN every month. It was well written. And while one might quibble with some of its opinions I don’t recall it ever lying.

During the recent long war in the North I often read An Phoblacht. Very well written, though its regular feature “Remembering the Past” begged the question – “How could you remember the future?”  I occasionally disagreed with opinions in it, and wrote to it voicing that disagreement. In each case they published my letter unabridged.

I never detected a lie in it.

I, and better people than I, have recognised blatant deliberate  falsehoods in THE IRISH TIMES and have written to that “paper of record” refuting them. The paper spiked our letters, or letters from other readers refuting them.

The IRISH POLITICAL REVIEW each month publishes  some. letters spiked by THE IRISH TIMES.

If one didn’t know that the paper is controlled by a secretive, oathbound “Trust” set up by Harold Wilson’s favourite “Fixer” following the manipulation of the British Genius whose propaganda helped genocide in the 1965 coup in Indonesia, one might believe that the Defence of the Realm Act still has the Force of Law in Dublin.
