Sammy Wilson is a controversial figure I’m sure you’ll agree and I’m unfortunate to have him representing me as an MP, not that he does. Even within his own constituency, his voters have wild and varied opinions of him. The more right-wing with controversial views they are, the more they seem to love him. I even remember one of his voters ringing into William Crawley one day on Talkback telling him Sammy needs to “Wind his neck in” with another saying the DUP needed to “reel him in” because he was making a fool of them.
From allegedly commending the UDA on their doomsday plan to kill Catholics in the event of a united Ireland in an attempt to preserve a Protestant state to muttering “let them go to the chippy” on the green benches when Ian Blackford warned of food supply issues and shortages in the event of Brexit to frolicking naked through a field, Sammy has always been seen as the bad boy and the ever troublesome individual of the DUP.
So it really shouldn’t have come as much of a shock when after the Met Office, scientists, doctors and even the British government itself warned of the impending danger of the 40+ degree celsius heatwave, Sammy decided to open his mouth and during a discussion on Monday, he asked the UK’s Secretary of State for Health, Steve Barclay, if he agreed – “Most of our constituents if they are not working, are probably out enjoying the heat? When it gets too hot, they will go and sit in the shade, have a cold drink and cool down”.
I would agree with Sammy on this…but for the fact, the Met Office had warned temperatures were to rise to a dangerous 40+ degrees celsius in a single day triggering an unprecedented ‘red warning’. He then tweeted “Don’t listen to heatwave hysteria.” The very next day the temperature in parts of England reached 43.8 degrees celsius. People’s houses burned down in front of their very eyes, entire rows of houses burned down, cars burned, and the Fire and Rescue Service stopped responding to automated alarms because they were so stretched. The NHS, already under pressure thanks to a surge in Covid saw a massive spike in heat-related admissions…and Sammy Wilson MP had berated the Government for being hysterical about this heatwave. I wonder does Sammy know that over 1000 people have died in Europe because of this heatwave? Does he care about the people who were out working in it?
There’s something I’ve noticed about Sammy Wilson and that’s the fact he genuinely doesn’t seem to care about anyone but himself. See, Sammy Wilson is a climate change denier. He’s been called out on it many times and while attempting to talk his way out of questioning on the matter consistently makes a complete fool of himself. Sammy later tweeted a video of his speech saying “Climate policies are costing my constituents a fortune and draining their pockets during a cost of living crisis” when in actuality the policies in place are there in an attempt to stop the kind of heatwave seen in England recently.
Like anyone else I like the heat and I wouldn’t claim to be a hardcore ‘climate activist’ but I’m clued in enough to know that if we don’t do something in the very near future to stop the warming in our atmosphere the earth will become unliveable…Clearly Sammy doesn’t plan to be around for that so doesn’t care.
