Yesterday, Sunday 16th October, The Sunday Times celebrated its 200th Birthday. It reproduced the front page of its first edition, which launched it as an organ of democratic and ethical concern in a world of oppressive and corrupt monarchies and empires, not least that of Britain. That world is still recognisable today but today’s Sunday Times has long made its peace with it, as have most of the
Western media.

Tomorrow, Tuesday 18th October, the BBC celebrates its 100th Birthday. I have listened to it for nearly 81 years and watched it for many decades.
I have been entertained and educated by much of its output and enraged and annoyed by much. It used to to call my country “Eire” but never called its nearest Continental country “La France” any more than it spoke of “Paree.” It now calls my country “The Republic of Ireland” a title belonging exclusively to a Soccer Team, according to a judgement in the Irish High Court. The Corporation’s first Director, Lord Reith, was a great admirer of Adolf Hitler, but so was John A Costello, who in 1949 declared that our country which had enjoyed a republican constitution since 1938, was, indeed, a Republic.
David Dimbleby recently recalled the BBC’s scrapping a “Real Lives” portrait of Martin McGuinness which showed that “terrorist” lovingly feeding his infant children, when Margaret Thatcher claimed that her Government wasn’t acting as censor. At the timeone of the BBC’s Directors was a member of MI6. If the BBC could be proved to be free of such spooks, i might eat my hat.
The BBC is primarily an agent of the British Government and happy to do its dirty work.
