Why Michael is singing and dancing

Guess what tune FF’s Michael McGrath is humming today? Probably some version of the old song ‘Lucky, lucky, lucky me!’ That’s because Michael has just landed the job of Ireland’s EU Commissioner (previously held by Mairead McGuinness) . For his pains he will get an annual salary of €310,000.

And that’s not all. He’ll get an ‘installation allowance’ somewhere between €839 and €1, 411.  While he’s away from Brussels, he’ll get all his hotel expenses paid, including room service. He’ll also get a daily allowance of €50 . He’ll also get €607 each month as “entertainment allowance”. And he’ll get €1500 in “parental leave allowance”, €417 a month in dependent child allowance and up to €320 a month in “educational allowance”. (I’m not sure if Mr McGrath has dependent children.  If he hasn’t, he must feel frustrated).

Assuming that he’s alive and well after five years toiling in Brussels, Michael will get €13,000 a month for five months – a kind of “We’re-gonna-miss-you” allowance.

You can say what you like about the EU, but you’ll have to speak loudly to be heard over Michael’s jubilant yodelling.

Jude…. are you just doing a jumping up and down jig of strangulated envy and trying to figure how these jobs didn’t feature till now?

Of course I’m envious, Peter. I’d make a FAAAAAR better Commissioner than Michael…

on that kind of money he could have as many children as he likes and it wouldn’t make a dent in his bank account
