Following a United Nations ruling that Britain had no legitimate claim to the islands,
which had been ruled by Mauritius, the British purported to intend to return them to
that sovereign state.
But the islands are the site of a huge joint US and UK base and neither of those
pedatory powers have any intention of leaving them.
Like Gibraltar. Malta, Cyprus and Ireland they are deemed strategic assets which
Britain has always intended to hold.They had no intention of leaving when they
tricked and threatened Sinn Fein delegates into signing Articles of Agreement in
December 1921, and the Free State Government into taking part in the Boundary
Commission in 1924. Sir Norman Brook’s Memorandum “Noted” by Attllee in 1941
is naked admission of cynical evil-doing.
The Good Friday Agreement is probably not worth the paper that it’s written on.
My late mother used say “Fool me oshame on you. Fool me twice, shame on
me.”
