I’d never heard of Maria Steen until a few days ago, and what I’ve heard about her is pretty impressive.
Her major quality, in my view, is that she is willing (and able) to NOT go with the flow. You may or may
not like her views, but they are undeniably courageous.
Without going back to Wikipedia, I believe she is an architect and a barrister. Clearly, then, a woman with a brain cell or two. In addition to that, she is a trained Montessori teacher. Anyone who knows anything about education will know that the Montessori method, while commendable, is damned difficult to put into practice. Ms Steen, I gather, has five children, all of whom are home-schooled. (The fact that you concluded it was she and not her husband who is doing the home-schooling may indicate that we’ve all got traditional ways of thinking.)
Finally, if you are of a liberal bent – as I am myself in most things – Steen appears to carry herself with dignity and seriousness of purpose. She has shown courage in standing by her convictions in the face of criticism, which is essential for a president who must represent Ireland on the world stage and at home without flinching in moments of national trial. A Maria Steen candidacy would elevate debate, offer voters a genuine choice, and remind Ireland that the presidency belongs to all its people, not just the political mainstream.
