Growing focus on Irish unity: A Burnham, please note

Here’s Prof Deirdre Hargey:

“It is really about a listening exercise so that we move away from rhetoric about constant issues that are repeated time and time again and see what people are feeling about the whole issue.”

It sounds about as vague as you can get, given that you’ve been entrusted by Simon Harris as the vaguely-lead person in his ambitious programme for the Fine Gael Ard Fheis in November.

Simon for a long time presented Irish reunification as a totally desirable aspiration – that is, yes, we like the idea of Irish reunification . Someday.  But since Leo Varadkar left politics, he has peeled off his FG costume and revealed himself as a strong advocate of nuts and bolts planning for a united Ireland, and Simon clearly wants to send out similar vibes.

With Micheál Martin spending €2 billion on soothing unionist nerves by putting in place improved northern infrastructure  with no strings attached, and Sinn Feín pressing for a green paper on Irish unity, expect Micheál to become more vocal about the need for Irish unity.

Let’s hope Simon has the cojones to pressure Andy B into telling us the views of the British government.
