PS In an earlier version of this blog, I attributed Stephen’s froth to councillors and Belfast City Hall. If I had been paying proper attention to Stephen – as we all should – I would have known he was talking about MLAs and Stormont. Mo leithsceál…
I was listening to the end bit of S Nolan today and he was working himself into his favourite state, a froth of indignation – this time about Stormont and electric cars (EVs). It seems Stormont has installed two charging points which MLAs may use if they have an EV, and would you Adam ‘n’ Eve it, THEY’RE NOT BEING CHARGED! I mean, their EVs are being charged with electricity, but it comes free for the EVer MLAs. Nolan is furious and demands that a spokesperson from the various parties report to him and explain themselves.
‘Swounds. Where to begin?
Nolan ticked off the other types of car – petrol, diesel – and said they weren’t getting free petrol or diesel. Indeed. But shouldn’t you, dear Stephen, be thundering condemnation on these petrolheads? After all, they’re working at screwing up the planet whereas the EV owners are going to the expense and bother of getting an EV and doing their however-small bit for the planet.
Personally, I ‘d have thought Nolan’s froth and ire would have been directed at ALL the cars in the Stormont carpark. I’m open to correction, but I don’t think they have to pay parking fees, like the rest of us have to. Not for them the cold sweat at midnight, where you awaken from a nightmare that one of the damned Redcoats has just pinned a big bulky summons to your windscreen, noting that you haven’t paid and the law says you must. Or does Stephen have some special grudge against the EVers?
But to be honest, it’s Nolan’s assumption that he is the people’s champion and he will hold these dodgy MLAs to account on behalf of the great unwashed public.
Stephen, you’re the biggest c- I mean your show is the biggest in the country, if we’re to believe you. Why not try for a bit of quality, instead of all these it’-a-disgrace-and-my-team-on-your-behalf-will-soon-call – these-duckers -to account.
I know, I know, dear reader. I’ve ruined your day by putting the image of a frothy indignant overweight in your mind. But I do it on behalf of the ordinary people, the little people. Just like Stephen says he does.

The big man does get worked up. Usually if a Republican gives him some home truths about the nature of our past conflict. He blows a gasket.
