Big Merv and Emma Little send a message

imagesimgres

You don’t have to open your mouth or tap computer keys to send a message.  If the next-door neighbours are claiming we’re rowdy and it’s agreed to meet and talk  things over,  I could skip the first meeting and send in my place my big  cousin with the boxer’s nose and the bulging biceps.  No words, you see, but the next-door neighbours would get a clear message for sure.

I have no way of knowing if that was DUP thinking the other day but according to John Manley in the VO, “As the four other parities wheeled out their big guns – including leaders and MPs -the DUP was represented at the talks table in the morning by special adviser Emma Little and Orange Order chaplain Mervyn Gibson, who it is understood is not a member of the party”.

The talks were to tackle flags, parades and the past; the presence of big Merv and Emma Little made it clear that (i) the DUP had contempt for these talks; and (ii) they’d be focusing on the marches leading up to and including  this Twelfth. Meanwhile  a message has come from the far-off  planet inhabited by the TUV. Its vice-chairman and Orangeman Richard Cairns has declared that “while there was once a cry of ‘No talk, no walk’ the Unionist response to today’s outcome should be ‘No walk, no talk’.”

Yes, Richard,  we hear you loud and clear. This is a part of the United Kingdom. This is a state ruled by Unionism/Orangeism. Anybody who thinks that gathering round a table is going to stop the Orange Order from marching where and when it wants has another thing coming. And for good measure, we’re giving no guarantees about statues of the Virgin Mary appearing on top of any of our bonfires this year, and the same goes to the power of ten for the Irish tricolour and effigies of the Pope. I

Yes, Virginia: depressing is the word for it. One wonders:   is this the DUP whipping up tensions in the community by sending big Merv instead of one of their top guns, or is it the the community, as the TUV claims, which is filled with “enormous anger and resentment” and the DUP is just responding to that? The answer is both. Just as with the now-historic Belfast-City-Hall-Union-flag-tearing-down, which started with those DUP leaflets and in no time turned into rocks and petrol bombs and anything else handy flying through the air,  so the run-up to the Twelfth is a kind of dynamism between the DUP and the unionist community. We tell you your culture’s at stake, you tell us you don’t like that much, we tell you it’s an outrage, you tell us you’re seething, we tell you this will not stand, you reach for a rock…And so it goes.

There are two things that unionist politicians will not allow to enter their heads, on the grounds that it’d involve fresh thinking and  of that they are in mortal fear.  The first is that walking/parading/marching/doing the restless legs thing is unnecessary. Not just  unnecessary in contested areas but anywhere. It’d be fair to say that republicans feel pretty strongly about political and cultural matters; but the number of parades they hold are as a pimple on the arse of the world compared to the number –  4,000 a year and counting – which the Orange and related Loyal Orders feel they must mount, preferably through a nationalist district and failing that, as near to a nationalist district as possible. On what grounds? On the grounds of tradition, on the grounds that we’ve always done this. Oh come on, guys. It was traditional for my children, in the first two years of their lives,  to poo at will, regardless of company or circumstances. When they got to about three years of age they began to see that  this was an activity better done in private. The childish tradition was left behind.

The second is the necessity of all those mountainous bonfires.  Filling the air with their fumes, facilitating midnight piss-ups and Pope-burning, gobbling up Irish tricolours and heathen (i.e. Catholic) statues. Are these flaming mountains really the construction of forward-thinking, rational people? Is it not possible to celebrate whatever you believe without engaging in primeval practices that’d put, as one British Secretary of State said, a Hottentot tribe to shame?

But DUP and Orange thinking is that they’re under threat and it’s important to send a message to the ranks of feniandom that enough is enough, not one more inch. What they forget or choose to ignore is that their frozen-in-time paralysis leaves them more open by the year to the contempt, not just of their nationalist fellow-countrymen, but of the world.

In the name of decent living and moral hygiene, guys: get down from that high white horse and start acting like adults. The world is watching.

What about this Jude as a fair compromise have real movement were the Orangemen can march in peace as long as they behave in an acceptable way.

At the expense of the Irish language being given official status in Northern Ireland?

    • Jude Collins July 4, 2014 at 9:39 am #

Sounds very reasonable, Neill – except that an Irish Language Act was part of the Good Friday Agreement. As was respect between communities. Here’s another tit-for-tat that’s nearer the mark, I think: allow the Orange Order to march through Ardoyne and have Easter Week commemoration marches through Sandy Row….I agree – both stupid and provocative. Anyone who really wants to solve this knows the answer already: ban all marches. Then go from there to accommodate traditions. It’s worth noting too that Aug 15, which (in my opinion absurdly) was celebrated with natioanalist bonfires – that’s now been v largely replaced by Feile An Phobail. Loads of crack, no primitive fire-worship. Orangeism has so many possible avenues (metaphorical, not literal, Neill) it can take, and they’re all winners for everyone.

      • neill July 4, 2014 at 9:46 am #

Jude in fairness you have entered a cul de sac so to say….

My deal is the only fair Orangemen cant march without approval and the Irish language act can only get passed with unionist approval a little give and take is all that is wanted and no offence to Feile An Phobail I would rather tip my testes into acid than go to that event….

        • maryjo July 4, 2014 at 10:16 am #

Comparing Orange marching to the agreed official status of the Irish language is a very false equivalency – sillier than comparing marching season to GAA sporting activities. I don’t see Irish language speakers using their language preference as a weapon to insult fellow citizens or abuse police.

“The threat of violence” we are hearing about from unionist politicians during these heady days of July comes not from the nationalist community but from those loyal pyromaniacs who want to spend the next few weeks creating mayhem, whatever the economic or human costs. I have yet to see anyone getting violent about the Irish language though I admit some GAA players have thrown punches during disputed games. No equivalency, nevertheless.

          • neill July 4, 2014 at 10:56 am #

In your opinion maybe however if we have a little give and take we might get a solution

      • PW July 4, 2014 at 12:30 pm #

In reality, it’s probably a lot less esoteric to a global audience than watching bigots dressed in medieval costumes, singing the Sach and blasting out a few hymns whilst marching through Nationalist areas, even though the night before, the same people celebrated their culture by burning symbols of nationalism’s aspirations under the guise religious and civil liberty.

    Morning Jude

I wonder if you gathered information on GAR or whatever their names are, what it would throw out. Their pedigree would be first class IRA republican.

The last time I danced to the field was 1969, to Finaghy. None of the things you spoke of happened. We had a wonderful time, the build up to it was exciting, the bonefires, many a catholic from Iveagh Parade and Rodney Parade came to the Arch in Sandy Row, to dance.

In fact my cousin David Stewart, stood on top of a Mr Whippy ice cream van and sang, She loves you yeah yeah yeah, by the Beatles. He was the lead singer with the Clouds, you can google him. He literally stopped the parade on the Lisburn Road.

Maybe hearts are hardened, and the hate plays a big part. I am not speaking here for myself, I have no interest one way or another. I am strong in my faith and culture, and who I am.

But watching from the sidelines, it would appear, we are doing all the giving, and the Catholics are doing all the taking.

I also agree we have no leadership, you have to be cunning like a fox, and be patient, play the game.

It was hard last night watching Martin McGuiness, coming out of the talks, with that person, the gun runner, you know the one, smuggling guns from Florida USA. What a field day you’s would have had, had the shoe been on the other foot.

No, try as hard as I may, I don’t think I would have the stomach to sit with those people.

In the past they have rubbed shoulders with Gadaffi, Nelson Mandela, FARK, Cuba, birds of a feather and all that, too much has happened, too much hurt, we now have a reverse situation.
The Catholics are now doing exactly what the PROTESTANTS did to them. Same thing is happening in RSA. Google poor whites South Africa.
I have a nice life here far removed from all that madness. But I do believe too much Irishness can sicken you, a bit like over indulging.

Talking about indulgences, if we, in the past had not protested to the Pope, when he wanted us to pay more money for our indulgences, for that big church in Rome, you would have been rightly out of pocket.

You know the rest of the story, his powers did not work, nor his threats of excommunication.

The political haas beens have circled the wagons. The clan is united. It is speaking with one voice out of each side of its mouth…”graduated response…but no violence…spontaneous mass protests…The Parades Commission is a threat to democratic institutions… .” It would appear that Mr Bell was told to go on “The View” and repeat his mantra, “Republican violence…6 minute parade…” and smile broadly when on camera. A somewhat incongruous response. The benefit of spontaneous mass protests is that no one can be held accountable when elected representatives sit down in the autumn to “learn lessons” and prepare for the next marching season. Welfare Reform may be put on the long finger until the autumn. The N.I.H.E. may have got a rum deal recently and Mr McCausland may have been left with eigg on his startled brow but why worry, Mr Cameron has other matters on his mind? The Chief Constable was robust in his assertion that the PSNI would uphold the Parades Commission determination. What about the role of the Ulster Drugs Association and the U.V.F.? They appear to have been given the role of peace keepers during the marching season in conjunction with elected representatives. If political unionism will not engage with its political opponents, that is the real threat to democratic institutions. The former Chief Constable may have swept many issues under the carpet, however, the carpet is getting closer to the ceiling.

      Iolar :
I think you are getting it exactly right.I have to say , I’ve seen this movie so many times from unionism that it’s like the Hokey Cokey…
. You put your right foot in and you shake it all about..They’ve huffed off stage like so many prima donnas over the years that it is sooo old now….really stale and stinking….

.. That same old juvenile play -acting that was old even when Ian Paisley was doing it.It’s worse than those awful adverts you see on UTV..just before the local news comes on…the cheesy acting and singing and looking down at us poor plebs who don’t deserve any better.
      Maybe we don’t

These awful politicians are the best we can come up with. They come across….. as so politically uselessly inept that anyone with a functioning brain looking on , must despair at seeing. them.

The Big Huff when they left the talks yesterday was so obviously pre-planned weeks or months in advance and its’ timing at the mouth of the Marching Season Hell when the schools got out .was so transparent … The “Talks” could have happened at any time in the previous months but they had to happen just now so that they could be crashed at the right moment .

Then as you say there’s “the View.” …Despair , despair…..Mr Bell was like an automaton …batteries on full …the same tired old bullshit about Bomber this and Bomber that,…childish name -calling twenty years after the conflict has ended and another generation has since grown up As if the past twenty years never happened….. no sign of a bright new idea anywhere and some of the worst acting and delivery you could imagine .No De Niro , he…god it was woeful viewing to watch a clutch of politicians scratching and clucking like so many egg bound hens.

Like i said before . They haven’t a bloody clue . Roll on another mad fucking summer …bring on the water cannons and head off for your holidays….. They’ll all need a good cooling off before it’s all over…
The bastards are getting stupider by the year!!!

    and

“The Catholics are now doing exactly what the PROTESTANTS did to them. Same thing is happening in RSA. Google poor whites South Africa.”

If this is indeed how you feel, then what is it that makes you feel this way?

      RJC,
Michael answered it for you/me? Shoe other foot.
What exactly did the Protestants get out of this GFA.???
I think you’s all know enough about me, from previous blogs.
I have watched SF shout they haven’t gone away you know.
The OO are not going away, there is no talks HAAS or any other that will make this happen.
I don’t watch the parades, don’t part take in them, but if I am truly honest here, deep down, I cannot agree with any of you’s.
Why is it only Flags, Marches etc etc that are on the talks.
What exactly do you want from us, because it looks like there is no stopping you’s.
I am a possessive woman, I hold on tight to what’s mine, I never relent, it runs through my blood.
And if my back was ever against the wall, I would fight till my last dying breath.
It takes all sorts, for instance, you have all tried hard here this morning to be totally offensive, regarding my folk, my kin, yet I would rather sit next to an orange man, than a man with a blanket covered in shit.
You brought in KIing William prince of Orange, well Pope Hadrian gave Ireland away to England.
I know I must be sounding irate, but were is this equality, parity of esteem. Good neighbours make good fences.
I do believe, you’s think you are unstoppable.
Roles can be reversed, Ireland 26 counties don’t want this shit that England has to put up with. They do not want us either, so we had better start getting in with it, or we are going to self destruct.
      Norma.

        Norma,

Every lampost and flagpole in the town in which I live is currently adorned in Union flags.

Red, white and blue bunting is strung across every road, and a Loyalist arch sits in the centre of the town covered with tributes to the DUP, UUP, OO and B-Specials.

Is this what you are referring to when you say “where is this equality, parity of esteem?”

No of course not, I could not begin to tell you how much I hate this. I deplore it.
Can you not see, marches doubled, though I have not seen one in decades, literally, these flags are their way of trying to get their own back.
I really do not want to come across here, as a staunch or bitter Prod, I really don’t want to be that person. I really do enjoy each and every one of your contributions.

But the fact of the matter is a lot of people have not moved on, and really, be truthful, are they doing you any harm, did the taking of my flag from city hall do me any harm, come on, live and let live. Before you know it, it will be over, it’s only 26 weeks to Christmas.
          No harm meant Norma.

          • RJC July 4, 2014 at 3:47 pm #

I hope you don’t mind me asking you these questions, Norma. It’s just that when you say things like

“we are doing all the giving, and the Catholics are doing all the taking”

            and

“The Catholics are now doing exactly what the PROTESTANTS did to them”

I wonder what it is that makes you feel this way. I must admit, I can’t see it myself so I’m just wondering what you are seeing and experiencing that I am not.

Likewise, no harm meant! I’m glad that we can have these sort of discussions.

        • Peadar MacGhabhain July 4, 2014 at 11:39 pm #

Norma better not blame the wrong Pope
          It was Adrian IV
          Born c. 1100
          Hertfordshire, England
          Died September 1, 1159
was Pope from 1154 to 1159.
Adrian IV is the only Englishman who has occupied the papal chair.

Oh, Hadrian was a wall the Romans’ built in England too keep out THE SCOTTUS
In Latin meant Irish Raiders, so we Irish gave Scotland its name

The King was Henry II, called Curtmantle (5 March 1133 – 6 July 1189) ruled as King of England (1154–1189), Count of Anjou, Duke of Normandy, Duke of Aquitaine, Duke of Gascony, Count of Nantes, Lord of Ireland and, at various times, controlled parts of Wales, Scotland and western France. Henry was the first of the House of Plantagenet to rule England and was the great-grandson of William the Conqueror. Henry was the first to use the title “King of England” (as opposed to “King of the English.”)
But not as you note KING OF THE IRISH

Please Norma go study your history, and maybe you will come to understand your culture was one of OPPRESSION, AND STILL IS !

  9. Perkin Warbeck July 4, 2014 at 12:10 pm #

Time perhaps, methinks, for the OO to think outside the box (not the evergreen shrub thingy).

As one who speaks with the Olympian authority of one who attended his one and only Orange Parade in July of 67 (that would be 1967 or even, to quote the Falstaffian Paddy Devlin of the Stoops, 19 AND 67) I feel that it really is time for some new ideas from the rolled brolly boys of the old bowler hat brigade.

It’s not that I didn’t enjoy the Parade – in fact it was a hoot, pure hoot – the most enjoyable part of which was the sight of two inebriated bandsmen with tartan kilts akimbo, beating twelve bells out of each other even as they rolled in the lush grass in the Field of Finaghy. Sporran partners or what. Circumstances after that, alas, prevented one from making a return visit from the Deep South of Dublin but as the passing years dragged their feet so also did one’s desire to return begin to wane.

The reason? Sammy ole, Sammy ole. Seen one, seen them all.

It is with all due humility therefore that I choose to suggest the following. Spike Milligan, the noted gOOn once penned a Festive Season chanson of due solemnity whose first line went as follows: ‘I’m walking backwards for Christmas, acrosssssssssssssss the Irish Sea’.

Get the idea, chaps? ‘I’m marching backwards for the Twalfth called wee, acrossssssss the Irish sea’. Not as difficult as it might seem at first glance for the OTHER great contribution to World Culture of the Loyalist Cohort is to name their offspring backwards. Thus, there should be no great probs locating a wee mon whose first name is something like Crawford, or Hamilton or Campbell or Wilson itself to lead the parade while banging out the rhythm of the traditional Lambeg backstep.

Next, after reaching the Mainland shur they could keep on marching backwards as it’s an addictive kind of activity from all appearances. With perhaps a detour to sashay through such appropriately named hamlets as Leighton Buzzard, not stopping till they reach the fabled surrounds of the Bells of St. Clement’s in foggy old London Town. Should just reach that destination du jour in nice time for July 12th, 1815, OOps, 2015.

Then, with Crawford or Hamilton or Campbell or Wilson himself conducting both himself and the marchers with due decorum, the joyful notes of ‘Oranges and Lemons’ would be struck up. Mind you, sad to relate (and the following comes with a mental health warning which give me no consolation at all) it is not quite certain if Her Maj will open the Palatial skylight the better to leave the jolly stains of the merry tune in.

For, sadly, the same good lady is on recent record as saying She is, (sob) a fan of stickfighting, having had a Sky view of the barbaric game of late. (Mind you, there’s still hope for the LOL’s: there is no certainty that she will give her Herprimatur to the sister sport of bogball. Wait till she sees the Royals, I say).

But the omens are not good. So the Twalfth of Never Never Land might, alas and a lad and alackaday, prove to be Elsewhere, other than the Mainland.

So, let the airy, hairy Marchers without succumbing to the sissy temptation of glancing over the shoulder, be prepared to point their hindquarters for the non-fenian fens of East Anglia and strike up the virgin tune, panting to be payed: ‘I’m marching backwards for the Twelfh called wee, acrosssssssssssssssssssss the Zuider Zee’.

For, on the other side, lies Valhalla: the homeland of the Orange, the birthdayplace of King Bill. (If his White Horse was born in an Irish stable itself that still doesn’t make it a four legged Taig).

In other words, the Nederlands. Which may, or not be, a corruption of the old Friesian word, Neanderthal.

    OO, yes.

I can only see this as Unionism throwing their toys out of the pram again. To be honest you can’t really distinguish Unionism and Orangeism anymore, if you ever could. 75% of on the ground members of the DUP are Orangemen, yes it is a fact and one I read in a certain paper yesterday. So basically, Stormont and indeed the talks which broke down were focused more on parades than anything else, more to the fact they were focused entirely on whether Orangemen would be permitted to march their ‘traditional route’ past the Ardoyne Shops than anything else.

The days when Orangemen can walk all over Nationalists is long gone and because Nationalists and indeed Catholics are actually beginning to stand up for themselves through official channels of office, which lets be honest here, is a good thing, the Orangemen are angry. I would go so far as to ask how does it feel to have the shoe on the other foot?

The DUP, UUP, TUV, UPRG, are all deluding themselves! The Orange Order is the basis of what is making them seem like Neanderthals or unrepentant confederates to the rest of the world!

Wake up before every shred of goodwill from the rest of the world evaporates like a summer puddle!

The Orange Order should be renamed Orange disorder because that is what they cause here every year with their unquenched bigotry!

There should be an approval poll carried out on the Order just like there is on on political leaders and parties to see just how they are seen by sections of the community and the community os a whole. I have a strong suspicion that decent unionists would not mind if their son or daughter married a Catholic and would want to disassociate themselves from such un-Christian bigotry.

Shared spaces like City Centres and public spaces should be declared neutral zones and no political parades, flags or marches should be allowed on them for a start!

  13. RJC July 4, 2014 at 1:56 pm #

As Jude says at the end of his article –

“In the name of decent living and moral hygiene, guys: get down from that high white horse and start acting like adults. The world is watching.”

The tragedy of recent events such as Racist Pete’s Pastorgate, is that the world may have a tendency to tar us all with the same brush. I think blogs such as this are important in pointing out just who is responsible for this abhorrent behaviour.

The press in the Republic seem to more concerned with reporting on Garth Brooks concerts. Across the water, The Guardian appear to be reporting on events here with reasonable accuracy

    http://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2014/jul/03/northern-ireland-unionists-pull-out-all-party-talks-after-parade-ban

    – the comments below the article may not make pleasant reading for Unionism, if wondering what their British compatriots make of their behaviour. It’s also probably worth acknowledging just how much global reach The Guardian now has, in its online form.

I should imagine that Mr Haass and Ms O’Sullivan left with their heads in their hands last time, and who could blame them for never wanting to return? As long as the DUP continue to send an unelected Orangeman to represent them, then what can we possibly hope to achieve from ‘all-party talks’? Joint sovereignty or god forbid, direct rule from Westminster is preferable to this.

Why should two Americans nurse maid us, and direct talks, why?

If the talks are about the OO then why should Mr Gibson, not be in attendance. Was it OK for the gun runner to be there, please answer this question, if only this one.
With regards to Paster Peter, I am afraid I agree with him. Every last word.
Many years from now, perhaps when we have departed from this world, we will be fighting for survival.

The radicals call us kuffers, infidels, and when they take over we should have our heads shaved. And wear red belts, to identify us?
You lot seem to me to be highly educated, I am not, but I know my race is fast disappearing, I know that honesty is a dirty word today. I know we are all supposed to be PC and not speak of such things. Well this is the real Norma, so when they build that beautiful big mosque, and they are being called to prayer, five times a day, please build it right smack bang, in the middle of Ardoyne, I know PK said it was nice listening to it in Morrocco, two weeks is fine?

It really is a hoot to hear the latest discourse on how “Democracy” is somehow being twisted out of shape in favour of nationalists .Yes .that’s the latest bit of buffoonery they’ve come up with to stick up with the “Dilution of Our Culture” mantra. and the yapping about the “unelected” quango of the Parades Commission bending all of logic out of shape..They’ll complain next that the cops weren’t elected by them too!!

All this from the unionist parties ‘ dog …..being wagged by the “unelected” Orange Order tail. You couldn’t make it up. As Perkin already mentioned , our old friend and genial eccentric genius Mr Spike Milligan {late of India via this wee parish}…. had it all nailed way back in the 1950’s …we’re still …” walking backwards for Christmas , across the Irish Seaaaaa…” Good old Spike , the inspiration for a generation of Goonery…”Caw , said the crow….Balls, said the Milligan…..”…

I note that Dublin SF are asking the Croke Park residents to back off “for the sake of the city”
It would be a nice reciprocation if the SS residents were to be asked as well.

It has suddenly dawned on me that the plan as far as Nationalists are concerned is to wait long enough for the Unionists/Loyalists (same thing really) to `wise up`. I watched The View last night and it could easily have been 1996 with the Drumcree arguments or even 1974 when the politicians and gunmen brought the six counties to a halt. I am beginning to think there is no prospect of Unionists entering the twentieth century, never mind the twenty first. Jonathan Bell was embarrassment itself, resorting to calling Gerry Kelly `bomber` while being more than happy to align himself with UDA/UVF/Ulster Resistance personnel, past and present. Who or what is Mervyn Gibson? A UDA/UVF chaplain? Unionists simply refuse to face reality, there are MORE bands and parades now than there ever were. They don`t have a clue about negotiating with their political opponents, harping on about things that happened forty years ago, although the fact they still celebrate the Battle of the Boyne says it all. Either they catch themselves on or they suddenly wake up in a Nationalist majority six counties. They have shown themselves up by their nasty sectarian and racist behaviour. I don`t blame them entirely, Britain has to do away with it`s hateful, discriminatory anti Catholic laws regarding the head of state, that does not look like happening for a while sadly.

  19. Pointis July 4, 2014 at 5:25 pm #

Sadly for the British Monarchy, Ulster Loyalists are the very thing that bring that institution into disrepute and will probably hasten its timely end!

I bet the Queen is scundered every time she see sees those narrow minded bigots on the TV focusing the worlds attention on this archaic piece of anti-Catholic legislation.

  20. michael c July 4, 2014 at 5:32 pm #

Another Jude,You ask “who or what is Mervyn Gibson?” Well for your information ,Mervyn is a former member of RUC special branch which just about says it all, does’nt it?

That is really rich what you just stated.
Why should we forget about Gerry Kelly being a bomber, please answer I beg you, I want to hear what you have to say.
The Irish never forget about anything, ever!
They harp on and on and on, like a stuck record player.
I did not see the view so I cannot give an opinion.
I have been a law abiding citizen all my life, yet I have to endure a load of convicts ruling the place, you could not make it up? That is why the south does not want to touch here it’s too toxic.
Don’t go blaming one side, and making out the other is lily white, are you deluded.
The trouble with my side they don’t know how to play the game. If I was in power, I would tell them to walk away. Softly softly you wait your turn.
Please do me a favour, just wait till Connaght House is footing the bill, what goes round comes round. Peace out brother, these wheels have a long way to keep turning.
You are just making a big stick to best yourselves up with, making even the most liberal, middle of the road, don’t give a shit prods, angry.

    • ANOTHER JUDE July 4, 2014 at 11:49 pm #

Gerry Kelly carried out an attack on the hated Old Bailey, fair play to him. That was during the war Norma. He didn`t blow it up high enough for my liking, but that was forty years ago, during the war. Did you support the various military actions carried out by the Brits/RUC/UDA/UVF/UDR and the other various groups? Would you agree with the abolition of the anti Catholic laws regarding the British head of state? Are Catholics not entitled to equal treatment?

OK, OK guys. I was under the impression that I had an opportunity to OK all comments before they appeared but there appear to be several very large holes in my net. So in the meantime can I appeal to all – and that means ALL: passion in argument is fine but straight abuse is not. If you’re disagreeing with someone, give your reasons and then they’ll be able to decide whether those reasons make sense or not. It’s too easy to slip into slinging insults (and I include myself in that). So while I find the comments made very interesting and entertaining, make sure that they’re part of a point you’re making and that you’re not simply name-calling. As Mick Fealty puts it: play the ball, not the man (or woman – right Norma??)

It is hard not to feel increasing disconsolate about the behaviour of unionist politicians here. They continue to show a complete inability to compromise or show the slightest empathy for others here, I include Catholics, Nationalists, Republicans, Foreigners, Gays or Muslims. They snubbed Richard Hass, want out of the EU and want nothing to do with the rest of Ireland! They have shamed the country in the eyes of the world and have targeted moderate unionists for abuse by labelling them as being Lundys, Republicans and appeasers!

Have you considered that this current instability may actually be the ‘strategy of last resort’ for Loyalism and political unionism?

The greatest threat to unionism in the North is the inescapable increasing proportion of Catholics in the population.

Political unionism would seem not care about our international image caused by Orange strife and Loyalist racism. Recently Loyalists in North Belfast have been seen almost to be goading Anti-Sinn Fein elements into flexing their muscles in places like Ardoyne. Could it be that shunning international investment may actually be seen as a political positive for beleaguered Loyalists?

Any credible economist will tell you that any reduction in investment here will hit the young hardest especially in rural areas. And who makes up the majority of under 24s here? Catholics, the very threat that unionists fear most! Young unemployed Catholics would in all likelihood probably emigrate in large numbers thus redressing the imminent threat to the unionist share of the vote here.

While still in control of the DETINI, the DUP could manipulate any remaining investment into Unionist districts while still stoking the flames in Loyalism by maintaining to Loyalists that falling overall investment is all the fault of agitating Republicans (loyalist speak for Catholics).

For people who are better at looking back into history for their inspiration, this policy worked well enough for the ‘Big House’ unionists in the past in keeping the natives in check. Nelson McCausland has proved that there is not much stomach in political Nationalism to stand against alleged sectarian gerrymandering in the provision of social housing.

Loyalist can continue to intimidate Catholics from chasing jobs in Loyalist areas by perusing their ongoing, unchecked racist and sectarian thuggery.

In the absence of any other plausible explanation of otherwise inexplicable behaviour by some unionist politicians, it may be a possible answer. It may not be included on any political manifesto but would certainly advantage a fatalist Loyalist agenda. What’s to lose?

  34. Jude Collins July 4, 2014 at 9:10 pm #

That’s the problem, Norma .W e all tried to help in every way.Everyone knows they’ve dug a bi hole for themseves. Everyone’s been throwing down ropes and ladders but they burn them all. They pretend they can’t walk home from a day out which is claptrap because they can get home okay and are all tucked in bed with their cocoa when th 12 th is over .Do they think the world is nuts? For god’s sake everybody can get home….we’re not that bloody daft!
We’re dealing here with silly bloody mindedness from a group of big children who need to grow up and get a bit of sense. There are thousands of bloody walks, marches and parades…they can walk all over the bloody place and climb mountains if they want to but they are not wanted en masse in a few streets ….Big Deal! It ‘s time to grow up and get a life….What do we get? Government nministers walking out on their responsibilities because these buffers want to lie down on the supermarket floor and scream for sweeties.
Give me a bloody break! There are people starving in the world. There are people in really dire straits who have no homes, food or water. These people we are dealing with are fucking idiots…

  36. Norma wilson July 4, 2014 at 9:35 pm #

    Pointus,

How very eloquently put, how very sad that it has come to this. It really is no wonder some people commit suicide.
I have no wish to be part of it. My only surviving brother, when he graduated from QUB as a civil engineer, had to leave in the eighties through no work.
I do not wish for any future employers to turn their backs on the future generations. We are stuck, there is no solution to the problem. Both sides are full of hate, and destruction.
I have no hope, I did vote for the GFA, but I fear nothing has changed, it has gone from bad to worse.
As I stated before, I have four grandchildren, two has been privately educated, they will probably skip the country.
Triumphalism, no matter from which side, is bringing this country to its knees.
And when they look back into the history books, they will wonder, just what made us tick! A road, a flag,
    Norma

  38. Am Ghobsmacht July 4, 2014 at 11:30 pm #

    Bring back direct rule temporarily.

During that period place sever restrictions on parades.

Ban the flying of flags from public utilities.

All murals on public housing to be painted over.

    Enforce environmental standards on bonfires

Enforce designated days throughout all councils in NI (I mean ALL).

Bring in the Irish language act

Merge schools in mixed areas where possible (e.g. Magherafelt)

Have one or two MP’s only for the whole of NI (that’ll panic them).

Give indications of a border referendum in the not too distant future.

That’ll knock a few heads together.

Then bring back the circus on the hill once they’ve all had their wings clipped.

Too many carrots from London, not enough stick.

      Hi Am Ghobsmacht,

I have a feeling the British Government will take an attitude of “let them lie in their own s- -t” by deducting policing and clean up costs out of the delegated budget.

If rather than punish the whole population here, they could deduct costs from those seen to be causing the disorder the message would have a chance of getting through!

    • PW July 5, 2014 at 9:34 am #

AM, I would be inclined to agree with your idea. There will never be a way of dealing with ‘not an inchery’, so pull the carpet below their feet and make all necessary changes to the flawed system. I think we need to move a step backwards to move forwards again…
