Getting naked and getting justice

imgresimgres-1

OK – I was all set to do a blog on the hardships faced by enormously-wealthy stars who like to take their clothes off and video themselves (and others, probably) and then get  upset when someone hacks them. These stars do have a serious injustice to grapple with.

But I think I’ll blog on something trivial, like the people Trocaire tries to help. They can’t help the 22,000 children who die every day from poverty-related causes. Certainly not the ones that were sent to their graves from hunger and malnutrition while stars fretted about privacy violation. In the world today, there are two billion – you heard me, Virginia – two billion malnourished people and one billion who know what chronic hunger feels like. In short a basic human right – the right to food – is being denied to billions of people and killing people every day. All this in a world of bulging plenty.  Organisations like Trocaire try to help these people get land and access to clean water, to elements that would transform their lives.

The other thing I like about Trocaire is that they challenge the privileged and work for social justice throughout the world. In occupied Palestinian territories last year, it gave legal support to nearly 5,000 survivors of human rights violation. They do similar work in Honduras and Guatemala. And they support women in their movement into equal leadership posts in communities.

I could go on but I won’t. Instead I’ll just remind you that I’m running/staggering through the Waterside Half Marathon on Sunday 14 September – yep, just nine days from now. I’m doing the bone-breaking 13.1 miles in aid of Trocaire’s work and I’m looking for sponsors. That means YOU. So GIVE ME YOUR MONEY. ALL OF IT…OK, maybe not all but as much as you can spare. It literally is a question of life and death for many of these people. That’s why it’s important that you hurry with your little cursor and wide-waisted wallet to

where you’ll find all the details. I’ve a target of £1000  and we’ve still a long way to go. But I do have faith in people who have the good taste to read my blogs (even if they hate my guts). Don’t disillusion an old guy – get over there now and GIVE so other people get a chance to LIVE a half-decent life.

My sincere thanks. And remember, there are just NINE DAYS LEFT…

    Jude,

It is amazingly tone deaf for someone (who usually seems to have genuine progressive principles) to misogynistically dismiss out-of-hand concerns that apparently thousands of women of all classes seem to have about privacy and sexual exploitation, and doing so in juxtaposition with an organization that refuses to employ one of the most effective strategies to combat social injustice, child mortality, poverty, and food insecurity (female reproductive rights and family planning). Not only do they not employ it, but their religious arm actively fights against it!

You can be for protecting even rich women from sexual exploitation and still care deeply about social justice. It actually seems a far greater stretch to claim to be in favor of social justice, but against giving women tools that are absolutely necessary for achieving social equality.

    Thanks,
    Jim

Yes I know you can be concerned about the privacy of stars who make huge money by taking off their clothes in their films and then feel violated when their home movies of them with their clothes off get released to the world. But I can think of about 10 things more pressing to be concerned about. Starting with babies killed by malnutrition and thousands of children in Gaza slaughtered without sanction.
