I wonder how many people read the Letters page in our newspapers. I’d guess that quite a few do. Their reasons may be many but one must surely be that they’ll find in the Letters page comment that has a ring of authenticity – that has the smell of the sheep about it, as Pope Francis so memorably put it. (No, the Pope was actually talking metaphorically, Virginia, and about Catholic priests, not writers to the Editor.) An example is in today’s Irish Times.
The letter-writer, not from Dublin 4 but from Dublin 16, addresses the question of parades here. You’ll know by now that DUP policy is shaped by the Orange Order, so it’s a very important group the letter-writer is concerning herself with. She looks at parades here through a financial lens. How can we get out from under the vast expenditure that the Twaddell camp, for instance, is costing the tax-payer. Her suggested answer? Tickets.
Like all good ideas, it’s blindingly obvious once it’s said. There would be a small charge – about the price of a cinema ticket – for each marcher and each banner, and the proceeds would go to the policing costs and to a charity nominated by the residents of the area affected by the march. The cost of the ticket would be adjusted each year, to match with the cost of policing the march and the level of welcome shown by the local residents.
I call that illuminating and original thinking. For many Orangemen, their marches are an enjoyable day out, with sandwiches, beer and ice-cream readily available. Anyone who accepts the basics of logic would surely agree that the marchers should pay the enrance fee for the policing of this fun day out. And that the cost would rise or fall depending on the degree to which the marchers are welcome in the area where they have chosen to march.
No ticket, no dance.
Brilliant.
Brilliant! But for all marches and protests? Including Trade Unions? Gets tricky then – freedom of expression?
it’s a question of proportion isn’t it michael – .
“The number of parades organised by the loyal orders and broad Unionist tradition (2,569)
represents 58% of the overall total.
The number of parades organised Nationalist groups (175)
was a slight increase from the previous year (157) but remains very low at 4% of the overall total.
There was a substantial number of “Other” parades and an increase from the previous year (1,705 in comparison to 1365). This category includes charity, civic, rural and sporting events, as well as church parades. Collectively, these now made up 38% of the overall total number of parades (33% in 2011-12)”. https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/283148/1050.pdf
PS Aren’t most church parades orangeorder parades’
Ah Michael you have it in one justice for all Jude justice for all!
I’m deliberately refraining from pointing out the differences between the Orange Order and a trade union, so I accept your point: If a trade union march requires a degree of police time, then there’s a case for saying they should pay for that time. However, since the trade unions ARE different from the OO, I suspect the amount of policing required would be pretty modest, which means any ‘ticket’ charge would be correspondingly modest. Justice for all.
True, and useful. The principle of economy is in itself a crude device, itself capable of leading to unfair consequences. But it could be applied with, for example, a ‘hard cases’ category of possible exceptions exceptions – a means test for those wishing to ‘parade’ their views!
The Orange Order do not see themselves as a nuisance, outdated and hated, rather they still regard themselves as `the people` and the police are there to serve them. They do not give a fig about inconvenience or offence caused to uppity taigs, the idea they should actually take responsibility for their actions is not one that comes easily to them.Making them financially responsible for their own mess is just a step too far, it is like expecting the royal family to get a job.
Many democrats feel it is high time the royal family take ‘real’ jobs – in fact the younger (under 60) ones now do so. The writer’s claim that the Orange Order sees itself as ‘the people’ reveals the heart of the issue – namely that in a modern democracy ‘the people’ comprises ever extending diversity of beliefs, religions (and none), ethnicities, and political valuePerhaps you would like to think again about the acceptability of your remarks in a modern democracy and component of the EU, where customary ways are regulated by international norms of law, decency, and thrift!
Hi Jude : so we’re back on “Thinking outside the Box”….Another fine idea in our quest to solve a problem that you’d imagine some of our politicians in talks would have at least fumbled with by now .You’d think that , wouldn’t you.? Even if one of them had spent just a little time in reading your blog , or had one of the ideas mentioned in conversation over a beer or a cup of tea….over this past year or so , they might have picked up at least the scent of a new idea or two that they could have stolen for their own..I know i’ve floated several madcap scenarios which entertained us all and provided food for thought. There was the Marching Stadium and the Tunnel of Love and Various Amusements that could have been developed into money -making schemes while taking the sting out of it all.
I think none of it really matters anyway. The fact that the letter had a Dublin postcode would have it shunned and bon- fired with all the rest of the symbols that blind minds want to destroy. The fact is that dinosaurs never saw the end coming either and plodded on in face of an unimagined future…..and then they were just gone……As Mr Cooper would have it…”Just like that”.
Ticket would have to have a minimum price. Some of that £ could be diverted to education on the Shankill. Apparently a new mural, “The Shankill welcomes East Europeans” has the flags of Poland, Lithuania, Hungary and SWEDEN on display.
Equally some of the money could be spent on training Sinn Fein officials on dealing with victims of sexual abuse apparently they seem to have some problems with this issue….
Any Official of any political party dealing with victims of sexual abuse would of have only one course of action in this great democracy we call our own, and that is to tell the victim to contact the police immediately!!!……….They did…….she did……..end of conspiracy theory!!
And we could pay for mI5 and the RUC to have similar training on account of what they oversaw at Kincora – if we want to be consistent y’know
Kincora anyone??
“Equally some of the money could be spent on training Sinn Fein officials on dealing with victims of sexual abuse apparently they seem to have some problems with this issue…”
neill you left out the sexual abuse at Kincora Boys’Home. Oh, wait, Sinn Fein had nothing to do with that, that was MI5 and the British Government, so that’s OK then.
Just saying that SF are very quick at having a go at other groups like the Catholic church and yet are very quiet about there role in child abuse still as republicans I`m sure you will get to the bottom of that riddle fairly quickly?
Well i’ll have a think about republicans and child abuse and cover – ups etc and you can have a think about this one
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-northern-ireland-29705408
Well said Neill,
Truly fascinating reading how you can deal with the “orange problem”, why when my mind drifts back down the decades, I oft remember the “native Comanche problem”.
The wanton vandalism, the intimadation, the bombs, dirty blanket protests etc etc. I feel you are all suffering with memory loss.
I wonder what would have become OF US had king James won in Derry in 1690, I wonder would we even exist, and yes we are the people, and to any young PROTESTANTS out there, hold your head up be proud of who you are, get out and vote.
I am not against a new Ireland, but I don’t want part of this one. We are generations away, my big huge Catholic family want none of it, don’t see the logic, it’s like throwing out your fillet steak for a sausage.
YOUS created the bands and marching problem, You the national people created and orcastrasted this situation, you tried really hard to demonise the PROTESTANT citizens of this country, you tried to make it unworkable, all the while playing poor me the victim.
Shall I tell you what I thought the day you declared peace in 1994, I cried, I cried hard and sore, for I knew things would change, not for the better. You could never have bombed or bullied us, for we were not afraid, our enemies were more easily identified.
We stayed away from Indian territory, and another thing Jude before I sign off, what would you talk about if there was no DUP OO PR, marches etc etc.
I shall tell you what you have done for me, hav’nt watched the bands in decades, I shall be there next year supporting them.
Take the plank out of your eye, it’s clouding your judgement
Norma.
Jude
I find it hard to believe that the good people working at the Irish Times would allow a letter to be published that was not sent in by a resident of Dublin 4 !!! you are winding us up there
Jude
I rest my case lol
Jeezis , Norma what the hell was that rant all about? You are surely bound to know that we all have an unregulated problem running through our society here like writing through a stick of rock. You know too, that we all pay huge amounts of money to support this thing in terms of policing.I couldn’t really care whether men and women want to walk around in circles forever if it makes them very happy but I draw the line at paying for it. Okay, I could do with a whole lot less of it .Like schlocky Oirish country music, it just isn’t my thing at all. That is not really the point though.
We all pay for it while we nag about financial problems in the Health Service or lack of money for a whole range of other cultural events and as I said , it is totally unregulated in any way .Any kind of behaviour goes and we’re supposed to think that it is quite alright. It is commonly thought that unionism has a very pick and mix idea of keeping within the law.
Let’s get real here…. circuses are regulated , rock concerts are regulated. this is the modern world. They pay insurances and they provide their own in-house security .Try getting into your favourite rock concert without paying the price and carrying a ticket .Try getting into Slane Castle or Glastonbury without your ticket. In fact , I see our very own homegrown bluesman Van the man , Morrison has a concert coming up ….tickets up to £300.00 a pop . Now that would really make you appreciate your day out , wouldn’t it. There’ll definitely only be hard -core Van fans at that gig…right?. Everyone else will stay away.Big bands like the Rolling Stones tour like a well-oiled machine , with every detail ironed out .It took them many years to get that organised but it started with an -off stage murder , before their eyes at the Altamont Festival. That event tightened up their act.
In Northern Ireland, it has to start somewhere too, but no-one seems to want to organise a sensible solution .They’d rather bitch and blame everyone else for their lack of organisation.
To say that anyone outside of the bands and organisations themselves actually created the problem is plainly…well totally mad, actually. If it’s the chicken and the egg and who came first, well actually it’s the Orange Order which wants to do do what another party doesn’t want them to do.They came first. They are the ones who want to walk through an area whose residents don’t want them to.They may have been able to do it in a more unregulated time but that’s ancient history. It’s a bit like going into club where you know you might get mugged for looking a bit too flash.you would avoid it if you had any ….
…….sense…
Well…”sense”…that’s what it all boils down to really. God help us , some have a bit and some patently are deficient in that area. The residents are fed up with them doing it and are questioning the need for them to do it. They are pretty adamant about their reasons too, which could easily be made into a list for anyone who is curious to have a look at.I’m pretty sure most of those reasons are not acts of fiction either…A cursory glance at the actual reasons might help.
Now , if the Orange order stopped fuming for a moment and actually thought about it ,they could probably come up with a viable in-house solution which might work.I haven’t heard any of their great ideas and I don’t believe they have come up with any new inventions that make reasonable sense. We’re not asking them to invent a perpetual motion machine either. The solution should be within reasonable reach. On the other hand ,I have thrown a few ideas…my own tuppence worth into the hat for anyone to chew on and discuss. Maybe …some new ideas…new ways of looking at the same tired old problems…maybe not. The thing is , at least it’s a try …an attempt to think a little clearer…a little newer. Something that will no longer annoy people and save us all money …and be self sufficient
I want to know what great “new” ideas are being put out on the table at these new talks , for example.I don’t believe they had anything new last year, but who knows, maybe a lightbulb will go off and they’ll have a Eureka moment this year. Going on past performance it’s not a game I’d put money on. I think these talks are a smokescreen and will come to nothing.
Now , Norma , i don’t want anybody or any “community”….. “demonised “, either. Well , I wouldn’t would I? If I don’t believe in a God so ,I’m hardly going to believe in a demon with a forked tail and horns either, right?
No gods and no Satan for me , so no demonising either. No faeries and no Santa claus either. People are crazy enough already and there are plenty of “Christian” hypocrites on both sides {and other sides too} …to keep” hell” going here in Ireland without worrying how their wee minds can talk about Christian love while they hate the hell out of their neighbours. No that’s too weird for me entirely. What I want is a fair deal where everyone pays their way and everyone cleans up their own mess. It’s like looking after a dog. There are regulations involved in cleaning up its mess in public places or some poor bugger steps in the result.if you don’t ,then you pay the fine.
If you want to invite a bunch of people onto the streets, I’m afraid they will have to be your responsibility and you’ll have to pay the bill. For example , if i wanted to organise a big music festival in the middle of a large town or city , I’d have to put up securities before anything happened …if i was allowed to close off a town and do it at all.
Now let’s get another few things straight. We might discuss this and that here but it doesn’t follow that we actually support or are members of any political party or none. I vote , like everyone else but I’m not a member of a party and I’d reserve the right to change my mind at any moment.I was glad when the cease-fires were called but I was never part of any of the parties involved in any of it. I don’t live in a “community” either. I am quite alone in my views although they may or may not jive with some others here. I don’t feel part of some big catholic ,protestant or muslim “gang”, which is why I want a government that favours neither but protects us all. That’s not what we have.
So, as to the bands . Let them pay and play but not where they are not wanted .That’s simple enough.Negotiate if you want it some other way but if you get the same answer, ask yourself self-critically why people think you are stinking up the place. Be honest with your answers too…no pussyfooting about and blaming everyone else. If your act really stinks ,you’ll get no stage -time , right? The man with the big hook will hoik you off into the wings.
If we ever get enough intelligent people to sort this mess out, then we should be able to discuss rationally the pros and cons of further political development in Ireland .We’re not there yet though. If we get there, hopefully it will be for all the right reasons , financial, economical and cultural and not for some mad glorious revenge on our neighbours.
Paddy Kool,
As usual the calming effect with you. I find it truly offensive that you are all disgussing the cost of this March or that one. For a person who never cared one way or the other I found myself getting cross there.
I am a liberal, a middle of the road person, but Jude has been Nit picking continuously just champing away. Trying to fool us trick us into more anti PROTESTANT culture.
I watched a picture on the legionnaires last week on Rte1, that was scarey
Paddy Kool
Sorry it has taken until now to get back.
This is how i feel, now i always classed myself as middle of the road, mixed marriage, brought my children up to respect everyone regardless of creed colour or religion.
But lately, you would swear listening to the nationalists republicans Catholics, that they were Angels played no part in this filthy dirty war.
I did not give my faith up, but at this moment in time it’s on the cards I will convert to Judaism.
I don’t find this country very accommodating towards the PROTESTANTS in the interface trouble spots. Nothing will convince me it’s not organised by the IRA
I don’t want your Irishess shoved down my throat, I don’t want it printed on streets, leaflets or in government. It costs money, and it serves no purpose.
All well nearly all your elected politicians have blood on their hands, they are rough, and sometimes uncouth.
If Maria Cahill was treated the way she was, want chance would mine have?
My internet service provider crashed yesterday, and to Ben I have not checked this out that’s checked not cheques.
This is how I feel tell the truth Norma
“YOUS created the bands and marching problem, You the national people created and orcastrasted this situation”,
Norma is in the midst of a a full-blown Educational Emergency.
Don’t panic, Norma dear – help is on the way!

Helpful tip: Make friends with your spell-checker or invest in a good English dictionary
Found in any good bookshop and even online, dictionaries not expensive and are true friends and allies
Listen here Smart Arse Ben Madigan
I have thesaurus,s dictionaries atlas’s all the books you can read. I have two Apple Macs 2 iPads 4 iPhones, they all do spellcheck. You condescending little twat?
I rushed that through and did not check, any low life knows how to spell intimidate.
We have always been reared in a home with all the help needed.
Cheeky git Norma
Dearest Ben Madigan

I am à touch typist who is punching put in an iPhone.
Two Apple computers, iPads iPhones don’t you dare tell me what to invest in, you jumped up piece of …….
Norma.
Ah Norma, you’re a typical case of someone living denial.
Not to put to fine a point on it, but your ‘psychological projection’ is showing!
Denial of what? What am I in denial off. I speak the truth.
Sometimes the truth hurts. I say get over it.
In decades you have screwed thousand from cross community funs, we’re has all that money gone. There is no tolerance here, marches flags bands, what are you contributing to the talks……you don’t get money after the poor way you have acted toward your fellow brother and sister.
Denial of what’s, change the record
Jude
“Anyone who accepts the basics of logic “. Right there is where your argument falls. For any idea such as this to work it has to get passed through the Assembly.
Unionists will simply veto it.
Some kind of charge for each Lodge just might work (ticketing individual marchers is absurd) but again I fear it would fall at the first hurdle.
More rigorous enforcement of our existing laws would be more like it. Obvious and boring maybe but it is the only realistic way forward.
“someone living denial.”
Should read; someone living in denial.
Senility is creeping up on me!
‘For many Orangemen, their marches are an enjoyable day out, with sandwiches, beer and ice-cream readily available.’ Not sure if you really believe that Jude, or perhaps you were just including it to bring a bit of balance to the article.
According to the Cambridge Dictionary a bigot is ‘a person who has strong, unreasonable beliefs and who thinks that anyone who does not have the same beliefs is wrong:’
That in a nutshell sums up the Orange Order and anyone who joins the organisation, unless they are totally brain-dead, knows exactly what it stands for..
A good friend of mine has a turn of phrase which is worth repeating- every cripple has his own way of walking – and so it is with the Orange Order. They can march until the cows come home, just so long as it is in their own area and the best part of it is no tickets needed.
Part of the problem of course is that when you live in an 18th century time-warp you don’t realise the world outside has changed and what was tolerated in the past certainly won’t be tolerated now. Everyone has a right to live without harassment and intimidation.
Of course the steady ‘greening’ of the ‘wee six’ means that situations like Twaddell Avenue will continue for the foreseeable future. However the Taig genie is out of the bottle and won’t be heading back anytime soon.
I think many OO people don’t think about its anti-Catholic stand – or they push it to the back of their mind. A BIT – not totally at all but a bit – like GAA players don’t think of the reason the Association was founded.
“I think many OO people don’t think about its anti-Catholic stand” –
beg to doubt that Jude when you consider the presciption on having Catholic family members and the oath they swear upon joining the organization which includes
“he should strenuously oppose the fatal errors and doctrines of the Church of Rome and other Non-Reformed faiths, and scrupulously avoid countenancing (by his presence or otherwise) any act or ceremony of Roman Catholic or other non-Reformed Worship; he should, by all lawful means, resist the ascendancy, encroachments, and the extension of their power”,
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orange_Order
Don’t know much about the GAA . Do you have to swear an oath to join?
Benny Boy
Guess WHAT, I have just saved your piece note the correct piece, not peace, to my home screen to read later on. Me thinks you want to join the OO, I am a PROTESTANT and did not know about all this supremacy!!!!
If you suffer from an inferiority complex that’s tough or is it tuff, must get my dictionary out, we would not want smart arse BM having a go.
My belief is some people play gaelic, some run, some sing some march. Get over it, you have chewed this bone clean out of marrow. I tried to explain to you last night, I don’t follow the twelfth, see spelt that right correctly. Now I feel it’s my duty to side with them, because I would be a traitor to do anything else.
I don’t wish to get personal here but have no option, I could never be a Roman Catholic it is a load of superstitious nonsense, no offence. Where is the love from the nuns or brothers, nay not for me sorry.
Norma
@ Norma – You state that you brought your children up to respect everyone. Did your Parents do the same in your case? – Within one blog, you have called a contributor: “A smart arse / A condescending little twat / A cheeky git” – and “You jumped up piece of….”. (I imagine you were going to add ‘shit’, or something likewise).
If you’re pertaining to “Irishness being shoved down your throat” – possibly via Jude’s Blogs – simply discontinue your subscription (and also prevail from watching Southern-based TV Stations) – ie: RTE (as you state). As regards Blogs, i’m sure there’s plenty more in your neck of the woods, much more agreeable to your disposition.
To call yourself ‘a liberal’ – whilst constantly posting hate-filled rants, is completely beyond me. Also – you don’t seem to know where you’re at. PROTESTANT (no need to shout Norma) – Jewish the next.
I suggest you take a good, long hard look at yourself – and see a Psychiatrist too. You have serious issues that need addressing.
Comparing the Orange Order with the GAA is not a a valid comparison.
One is a religious group which only allows members of a particular religious sect to join.
The other is a sporting organization with open membership.
The Knights of Columbanus would be a more appropriate organization to compare to the Orange Order – though I do not know if they insist on marching through the British-minority communities in Ireland whilst singing Irish Nationalist songs and flying the National flag of Ireland hundreds of time each year.
“I could never be a Roman Catholic it is a load of superstitious nonsense, no offence.”
Norma, you are one sick puppy! You seek help somewhere.
Jim
Sadly Norma is factually accurate, if a bit rude. Roman Catholicism is just a form of superstition
“Superstition: Religious belief or practice considered to be irrational, unfounded, or based on fear or ignorance; excessively credulous belief in and reverence for the supernatural.” (OED)
She should have added that the reformed faith and all other religions are equally superstitious.
So you believe superstition and religion are one and the same thing, gio? Seems a waste, then, to have two words where one would do.
Jude
Religion is a specific kind of superstition. Others might be astrology, witchcraft, luck, magic etc.
Your dictionary friend
Gio.
Ok – thanks for that, gio. I’m off to check my dictionary. I assume they’ll use ‘superstition’ as a synonym for ‘religion’.
Jude
It would not be a synonym really when religion is a subset of superstition.
There is probably a joke to be made about loving the sinner, but hating the
syn in ‘im. Maybe Perkin can polish it up a bit.
Oh very good, gio. Top marks for wit. But I’m afraid you’ve flunked the dictionary skills test…
Giordanobruno,
You missed my point entirely; Norma grossly offends those of us who practice our Catholicism and then goes on to add “no offence”
An total oxymoron.
But I can understand your rush to defend Norma, it really gave you an opportunity to demonize religion in general, and Catholicism in particular.
Jim
Not Catholicism in particular, but yes I’m happy to have a go at religion in general.
Although I respect your right to believe whatever you wish I’m not obliged to respect the actual content of any belief.
But if you or Jude want to explain why religion should not be included under superstition in the dictionary I am happy to listen.
Giro, I’m not a theologian but maybe the following explanation will help. I did a little research on the net and it’s the best I could come up with. It certainly explains the issue better than I could ever do;
“There is a huge difference between superstition and religion, however, most atheists will tell you otherwise. A religion is a faith that people abide by and live by every day of their lives, either by sticking to a moral code or worshipping in place of worship, like a church. Most people that are a part of a faith do both, as this is the way in which their holy book tells them to live.
A superstition is similar in that it involves people believing in something – however, it is fundamentally different in that it is not a whole culture, it is not something people believe was created by a higher power and it does not involve a moral code. Instead, superstition involves individuals avoiding performing particular acts as they believe that it will be ‘bad luck’ for them.
Religions also involve holy books. In the instance of Christianity, the holy book is the Bible, and it is a book that was written over hundreds of years that outlines Christian stories that relate to God, as well as the way in which good Christians should live. It outlines how to worship God, and the ‘ten commandments’ that you must live by every day of your life.
The Koran is yet another holy book. The book, however, is different. It is used in the Islamic religion and was written by one man at one time – Mohammed. He is the prophet that most people know about, in relation to this religion, and he was behind the creation of this incredibly controversial religion.
Superstition does not involve a book written by anybody. Instead, it’s more of a convention. It is something that has been passed down over the centuries just like fairy tales and stories. Superstition is not true, whilst religion simply cannot be proven to not be true.”
Simper fi.
Did anyone see the video of the Ardoyne bandsman forcing his way through a PSNI officer who was recording their parade for evidence should it be needed and demanding that he move back so he could march on through, or the Orangemen outside St. Patrick’s church throwing up the middle finger at the parishioners as they passed in a sickening act of what has come to be known as ‘culture’ for some reason even though the parishioners were supposed to be allowed to leave the church before the parade passed .
Orange men, hell, the whole Loyalist culture seems to forget there are two ‘main’ sides here, Nationalist and Loyalist. People can bum and blow about it being Protestant and Catholic but at the end of the day its about ‘Loyalist’ Parades and Nationalists being downright fed up with being bullied into a courner every time a Loyalist parade forces its way through their community unwanted.
I would have to say having bands pay for a march is a great idea, whether Nationalist or Loyalist bands or demonstrations for that matter they should be held to account for the behavior of all bandsmen and supporters. They should be handed the bill for at least a portion of the policing bill and for the cleanup afterwards. If the Loyalist bands feel they must march through a Nationalist area where they are not wanted they should be hit with a penalty for going ahead with an ‘unsociable parade/demonstration’. If bands cannot come up with the money then they don’t march, simple as that. You could see it as being similar to having no tax for your car, if you don’t have the tax, you can’t drive on the road.
Norma I don’t know what your problem is, one minute you are calling for the annihilation of of an entire people in an enclave in Palestine, the next you are telling us you were brought up to respect everyone and all. With all due respect I call b*llsh*t on that. You are a bigoted little woman who seems to get a lot of pleasure out of bashing anything Irish or indeed Nationalist or Republican. To say you “cried” when a ceasefire was called just goes to show what kind of a mentality you have. You would rather hold onto the coat tails of Loyalism and the dominant side than strive for a country of equals for no matter how your strange mind sees it, pre-ceasefire the North of Ireland was not a country of equals, the whole world realised that, even the Brits expressed such a view in available MI5 and Special Branch files.
Life was hell for Catholics and Republicans pre-ceasefire. Now its somewhat livable but we’re still not equals and going by the refusal of the DUP to sit in talks while an Irish government official is present we’ve still a long way to go as Unionism continues to dig its heels in continuously to try and scratch back some form of Unionist colonial rule.
Absolutely excellent comment Michael. Very eloquent and true, word for word. I applaud you.
Very best wishes,
John
