WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH PEOPLE, ANYWAY? by Harry McAvinchey

Bert-and-Ernie

“…Meanwhile,  back in early summer as the Tardis slips through a temporal wormhole and  lands in Norneverland

I’m out here in the garden raking hard at  some broadleaf clover that is beginning to win its war of attrition with it  co-joined neighbours, my grass. At around this time every year it’s the same old story. Everything is rolling along very nicely and quietly, but sometime in early  July, just as school gets out for the summer , the bovver boys of the lawn stretch their collective spindly  arms, shake the Spring sleep from their eyes and begin a potential putsch  right there on the greensward before me .Without my help with that old long-tined lawn rake that was part of my late Uncle Paddy’s bequest, my poor old skinny grass would have no chance against these thick- leaved stumpy , muscle-bound  hellions from herbal hell. They’d begin their slow strangulation creep across the territory.

I’ve just been listening in amazement to some wee Irish  girl singing on the radio who is sponsored by someone called Will. I. Am….I know, don’t ask..He couldn’t have called himself “Liam” and be done with it ….but anyway….The wee singer was called Liah Mc Fall and  I  have to say,  to ask any singer to sing live at any ungodly time of the morning would present a challenge to anyone. Most singers hate that but this young vocalist amazed me with the easy  vocal control she displayed …all this at a time of the day when I can barely speak without a pot of Punjana  tea in me.

Anyway that was a pleasant interlude, but it wasn’t what I was thinking about while I fought the good fight with this aggressive clover. I was thinking , what the hell is wrong with people?

Earlier on the radio  there was  a story  about a baker who wouldn’t bake a cake celebrating the gay marriage of two individuals or somesuch The details are a little hazy, it being early and the old mind is still in second gear..I assumed they were two male gay men because they wanted the two Muppet Show  characters …or was that Sesame Street …? . Bert and Ernie on the top of the cake. Okay, let’s assume that these two wee wooly puppet- muppets were nominally male {even though none of us ever saw their nominal male sex organs inside their wooly trousers}, who knew they were “Gay Icons”? Not me anyway! I suppose though ,if you were some young gay guy or girl , you might pick up those kinds of signals…y’know catching straws in the winds  of insecurity and that.

Now, I can understand that a lot of young ladies were very disappointed when they discovered too late, that George Michael and Boy George were “true” gay icons and probably tore down their wet- dream posters from their collective bedroom walls, in a fit of adolescent pique  , but they got over it, just as previous generations got over Rock Hudson, James Dean and Richard Chamberlain when they discovered their true sexuality…It’s not as if they were ever going to marry any of them anyway or even get into the same room with them .Right? Most of it all hinges on fantasy and disappointment , doesn’t it .It’s like finding out that Clark Gable had false teeth and every time he smooched up to Scarlett in “Gone with the Wind”, she recoiled at the stench of his gale ten breath…Or that Marilyn Monroe had serious flatulence and farted like a donkey on beans. Or that Abraham Lincoln had wooden teeth. Some of these things are undoubtedly true, mind. You should look them up if you are feeling particularly salacious.

Anyway….what is the Big Deal? .Every one of us has some gay relations or friends that we may or may not know about. It’s like all those people walking about in the street or living across the road from you .What do you really know or care about what they do in the privacy of their own homes? .When are you ever in their homes? How many times in any given day, week, month or year would you ever see them, never mind get into their bedrooms or bathrooms and see how much or how little sex they have, or with whom,  or whether or not hair grows on their toes.?

It might sound daft and that’s because people really are daft.  That’s the kind of mad imaginary stuff that bugs and bothers them .

Now this baker may have a thing about the sanctity of marriage .That’s fair enough, I suppose. It’s a personal thing , but how does that translate in relation  to what someone else believes in.? To all intents and purposes “marriage”as we know it is a fairly recent construct anyway. There are plenty of people who would never dream of bothering with it anyway. Ma and Pa Larkin in “the Darling Buds of May”, for one example .You’d think that those who like it would encourage it though….whether or not it was between males , females or aliens!

From the late 19th century throughout the 21st century, marriage has undergone gradual legal changes, aimed at improving the rights of women. These changes included giving wives a legal identity of their own. Before that the female partner had about the same status as a good horse.Marriage was about ownership, anyway. People felt safer within the folds of a “stable” household….

See how I slipped in that “horse” reference there?..

A lot of  the rules of marriage were to do with a safe  exchange of sex between safely consenting adults..rather than those disease- ridden free-range  choices out there  in the streets at that time. They were aimed at  questions of the right for husbands to physically discipline their wives, It was about  giving wives property rights and  liberalizing divorce laws,. It was   to do with  asking a wife’s consent for sexual relations  to occur. This was mostly in in Western countries. . Now it is understandable that social changes are moving too fast for a lot of people in this modern world, but you would think that “any” kind of marriage would be a stabilising factor for everyone should they wish to marry a male or a female .

No one is being asked to share a bedroom with them as they practice macrame or  knit a shawl, after all.

Anyway , there I was thinking about this , when the rain came down.Such a bloody shower!! The kind of downfall that would soak you to the skin  within minutes and have the roads  running like rivers into blocked drains.

I’ve no doubt at all that what with all this extra moisture and the clammy heat, that  the bloody clover will be springing back to life, with a vengeance too….

Grass and clover ..a marriage made in hell.

Marriage is about male and female and kids.
In Old Testament times the woman could be exchanged if she did not produce, or a second wife taken.
    Abraham is the classic case.
But who’s to stop anyone forming any other kind of bond?
Heck, most men get on best with their dogs!
But is a legal document required?
Well, if they don’t get on the SPCA will sort out the male human.
    Or a hospital will.
Why should anyone outside the formal bond desired be required to approve or disapprove of it?
Heck, businesses — including bakers — should be allowed to make bonds of their choosing with customers of their choosing, surely?
They can’t be expected to stock up on furry animals and such beyond the black-suited plastic groom and the flaring white dress of a plastic bride, surely?
A kids’ party baker would have a more extensive range of thing-mes to plonk on, including clowns (always a favourite) and smiling puppies.
And why not, in this case, locate a gay baker — I’ve met them far from the scene of the crime!
    This one takes the cake!

Anthony …I’m not sure where you live at this moment in time but marriage in the UK is a contract that has constantly evolved and is evolving. It is seen as a mechanism that is generally a good think for gluing society together. that society includes gay and lesbian couples who can have children by a plethora of means and live quiet, stable family lives in a loving and bonded way. That is what it means now.We have to remember too that everyone is not a Christian or a believer in a god either. There is more to marriage than “love” though. In many instances there is no physical love at all but there is a sharing of a life and of assets which require some legal status for everyone’s security. In the end…all kinds of marriages…sometimes arranged ones too…are about security and stability and can in many cases be essentially sexless anyway. Not everyone is fecund and not everyone wants sexual congress but they want a companionable stable unit within society. That holds whether they be gay or not.

        That’s “thing”…..not “think”!!!!!!

Sure, but why must I bake a cake in any particular instance if I don’t feel like it?
I’m well aware of the legalities and niceties, but also of the absurdities of believing any or all should be forced to conform to the practices of however big other group.
I’ve known nice gays and nasty gays, and would likely bake a couple a cake — but that’s me.
Just as I shall defend any person’s right to have their say, I will defend any person’s right to remain silent.

I have to admit I was against marriage for same sex couples when it was first proposed (see what I did there?) it just seemed `wrong`, just not `normal`. I am ashamed of myself for thinking that way, speaking as a good Catholic man who would never even dream of going against the Church, I have now come round to thinking people should be able to do whatever they want as long as it is not dangerous to others, all I ask is people carry out their `fun and games` behind closed doors! Whether they are gay or straight.

    • paddykool November 6, 2014 at 8:28 pm #

That’s it exactly. Most people will live out their entire lives and never , ever need to witness the sexual congress of their immediate friends, neighbours or anyone else (hopefully)….Why should they worry? They may never have witnessed their next door neighbour sitting down to eat a meal…Why should they worry if he eats what they think is the most revolting food …or not? Why should anyone’s personal choice of anything…tastes in partners of anything else included be of their concern?Nobody is being asked to emulate anyone else’s behaviour.
nobody is being asked to change the beliefs in their own head or alter their tastes but if a baker bakes cakes on the main street, he’s baking them for everyone who walks through his door.In that respect he is a dispassionate public servant and he should leave his personal foibles out of it.If we don’t start with that we’ll have discriminatory action at every turn.
If he wants simply to bake for a certain kind of Christian…and I know some gay christians who would not take his line…he’d need first to advertise his adversity to providing his services to gays, Jews, Jains or whatever…and then see if the law supports his stance on the high street. I don’t think it will somehow…the law is funny about this stuff.

  3. paddykool November 7, 2014 at 12:04 pm #

Yes, Anthony, the Law as we discussed elsewhere is an ass.The thing is there are plenty of laws whether seemingly good or bad depending on who you talk to . They are civic guidelines that we all put in place for the lowest common denominator’s protection..
Take wearing a seatbelt, drinking and driving , using your cellphone as you drive . These laws slowly evolved with growing technology and social changes.. Some people still do not act by them .In this case our tight little society in Norneverland hasn’t caught up yet. That’s all.
.Belief in a variety of religions and gods is a very personal choice but it is a faith-based choice .It has no basis in real logical reality. That’s the everyday logical reality we all swim through daily..We all have a choice to believe in anything …no matter how absurd that might appear. There are people buying cakes with all sorts of ideas rattling about in their heads but if a service is offered , it has to be offered to everyone across the board . Otherwise there will be a discrimination issue. As sure as night follows day, you will offend someone.
.It would be a better thing not to offer the illustrative cake service at all if you couldn’t agree with the idea that everyone ‘s point of view within reasonable legal grounds was agreed to . There are plenty of things that are taken for granted now that would have been seen as tasteless or obscene a generation ago. In fact ageneration ago it was illegal to be gay.
..You’d be safer saying ..we make great cakes but we don’t do slogans. That would keep your personal opinions in the clear and offend no one.
If another cake baker has no qualms , that should be up to him.
Remember .every butcher’s shop offends the vegans in our society but no one is forced to close them and vegetarians are not driven in to buy a nice bit of brisket…
