Martin, Gerry and the art of trampolining

Am I going mad? If you’d asked me six months ago  if I thought the Belfast Telegraph was a stout supporter of republicanism, I’d have replied with some confidence “Are you kidding?” Let’s say it hasn’t been unknown for the occasional columnist at the Bel Tel to write the odd column that hasn’t been totally twinkling with admiration for Sinn Fein.  But a short while back I came on a column headed “Exclusive: Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness writes for the Belfast Telegraph”. So I read through it to see if it’s maybe a send-up. Nope. It’s the real thing. Martin McGuinnness discussing sober political issues, arguing that far from having abandoned the most vulnerable in our society and implemented welfare cuts in the Stormont House Agreement, Sinn Fein has found ways – and money- which will protect them. So I rub my eyes for a bit and then it dawns on me: unionists quite like Martin McGuinness. Yes, I know. Not the reaction you’d expect to a former IRA commander. But somehow there are unionists out there who find it hard to hate him. Maybe it’s got something to do with his  friendliness. Maybe it’s got to do with the air of authority-without-pompousness he has. Or maybe because there is no denying that McGuinness is a man who doesn’t hesitate to take political risks. Like running for the Irish presidency. Or  meeting the head of state of the neighbouring island, not once but two or three times. Or standing shoulder-to-shoulder with the First Minister and the Chief Constable to condemn the violent republican dissidents who killed young Ronan Kerr. They’d never admit it, of course, but I’ll bet there are some unionists who silently wish they had a leader like that.

But of course there had to be a catch. When I’d finished reading the McGuinness article online  I glanced across to the right of the screen. There was a picture of Gerry Adams with a tag saying “What Gerry Adams likes to do naked in his garden”.  Was this the negative counterweight to the positive McGuinness piece? Besides, it’s hard to turn away from a heading like that so I clicked the link.

It was a report on an interview Gerry had done with Newstalk in the south. In  it he spoke of how he has a trampoline and how he likes to bounce on it. Naked. “Sometimes the dog joins in” Gerry confided. At this stage I’m checking the date but no, it’s still not April. Gerry goes on to talk about how he’s always had a dog and how pleasant it is to go hill-walking with the dog. And he adds that they – he and the dog – both love trampolining. “In fact I caught the dog doing it by himself once”.

There are people who say that this kind of talk shows that Gerry, unlike Martin, has lost the plot. Combined with his tweets about having a bath with a rubber duck, it’s evidence that it’s time he was led gently off-stage. Mmm. Well it’s talk you’d not get from any other Irish political leader, that’s for sure. But whatever else some people may call Gerry, few would call him a fool. My own conclusion is that he’s saying these things and watching the reaction of his listeners as their eyeballs whirl in their heads and they twitch with confusion.

And I do believe it links with the most interesting comment I’ve ever read about Gerry Adams. It was from someone who knew him from the early days. “When the rest of us were running to do a bit of stone-throwing at the police or the army, Gerry always asked ‘What’ll this gain us?’ ”  My guess is that the Sinn Fein president knows this rubber-duck-trampolining-dog-in-the-buff talk makes it hard for the media to present him as the incarnation of evil, which quite a few of them would dearly like to do. To paraphrase the old Julie Felix song ‘Turn, Turn, Turn”, there is a time for everything under heaven. A time to talk of rubber ducks and trampolining in the nude, and a time for working to make Sinn Fein the south’s biggest party after the next election. I’d be fairly confident Gerry Adams knows the difference.

Unionists believe (wrongly imo) that they have ‘house-trained’ McGuinness. Where as Adams is the man that abandons Stormont for the Dail. He’s the man that unionists believe (correctly imo) calls the SF strategy at Stormont – all the way from Dublin.

Adams is also the smarter man, the better strategist and the better politician. In short, Adams poses the much more serious political threat. He is therefore public enemy number 1 to unionists and partitionists all across these islands.

Jude, when I read these interviews which Gerry gives from time to time, I wonder is he just really winding them up to find out how daft a yarn they will really report as fact.
Let’s face it, if you were interviewing someone and they started talking in such manner would you not suddenly find a reason to end the interview and head for the nearest pub in search of sanity?
But no, these supposed journalists seem to faithfully copy down every word totally oblivious to their own gullibility.
As far as Marty being courted by the BelTel is concerned, maybe their management know something we don’t about how the forthcoming elections will pan out, and they are just getting on the right side of the next First Minister.
If Marty is going to do a bit of journalism on the side, how about getting him to do an interview with Gerry? That might throw up some useful insights!

Unionists bye and large dont mind Martin because he is straightforward gets to the point isnt pompous and his word his bond.

Gerry Adams however is a different kettle of fish indeed everybody on this blog knows my feelings on this man and his strange values I suspect we all know who will be viewed well by future generations and who wont.

As the old saying goes, `anyone who burns him for a fool will have wise ashes`. Gerry Adams deserves credit for the way he managed to lead the Republican movement during war and peace. At great personal risk to himself, interned, shot, beaten up, insulted and demonised. If he wants to bounce up and down on his trampoline then fair play to him. Maybe if some of the Unionist leaders indulged in a little bit they might not be quite so miserable looking.

Its obvious why Gerry trampolines – to get a “bounce” in the polls and it seems to be working!

A non story for the anti-Adams seagulls to peck at while still avidly watching the Trawler for more scraps. The Trampoline is no doubt a practice board for the bounces of jubilation when the election results come through in the south…….”Yes I’m glad you asked me that question regarding Michael Martin’s resignation, however hold on until I unpack this new Trampoline, my old one was worn out”. Support or not SF in every direction it has taken, I find it extremely vexing how the southern establishment line up in their indefatigable attempts to wear out Adams, and it is not beyond the realms of possibility that there is a southern faction trying to wrest the leadership away from him based ironically on which part of old Erin he hales from. Speaking to a Dub recently who suggested Adams’ time was over, I asked him who did he think would win the ensuing presidential election, Eamon Dunphy or Sinead O Connor?

Mr Adams is not a man to jump to conclusions. Mr Adams and his dog have not established a legal precedent in pursuing this form of physical activity.

Major Nissen of the 29th Company Royal Engineers began to experiment with hut designs
The Nissen hut was put into production in August 1916.

The first modern trampoline was built by George Nissen. Mr. Nissen, once rented a kangaroo to bounce with him in Central Park.

Trampolining is considered an Olympic sport. A performer is obliged to start and end on his or her feet. Mr Adams appears to be in training in order to reach greater heights. His fate is in his own hands.

When I first read all these articles about rubber ducks and bouncing naked I did honestly think Gerry Adams was losing the plot and then I realized. The man is no fool and he is certainly not stupid. Hes using this talk of “rubber ducks” and “trampolining naked with the dog” as a counter weight to his previous image he earned during his time as Sinn Fein leader during the troubles. This will make it harder for the media, both north and south, to demonize him which I think everyone can agree they are very eager to do, especially in the south.

Martin McGuinness is another clever and intelligent guy. Will he ever win a landslide victory in an east Belfast election? no but I think a lot of Unionists, mostly moderate and small “u” Unionists, have respect for him. Martin has shown far more leadership than any Unionist leader has ever done in the past few years, from meeting Queen Elizabeth II to condemning dissident republicans. Have we seen leadership of this scale shown by Peter Robinson or Mike Nesbitt? Definitely not. Instead of reaching out to the nationalist/republican/catholic community they have both retreated into the sectarian trenches and showed appalling leadership, if it can even be called “leadership”. The DUP/UUP releasing 40,000 leaflets to spark off the flag protests and then running away, Peter Robinsons disappearance for the next few months and Mike Nesbitt’s constant call for sectarian electoral pacts are just a few examples of Unionisms harking back to the past and their sectarian mindset compared to McGuinness’s progressive and open leadership and approach.

All the local spotlight up to this vis a vis the next Olympics has been on Rory McIlroy’s decison to wrap both the green flag plus and his plus fours around himself.

But Rory’s decison to ditch his inner Tory ought not to be the only story. an Olympic sport older than the debutante one of golf ought to hog some of the blogs.

One is thinking of sychronised trampolining. This is a sport where the Island of Ireland has never been represented and it is high time this deficency was rectified.

Go Gerry ! Go Fido ! Go Rio !

A sight to be seen on a godamn trampoline
Is one man and his dog both high on poteen
    For maximum bounce
    Spin doctors counse
For Rio, me boyo, do see ’bout a Brazilleen.

I read something the other day (can’t remember where) which argued that Gerry’s surreal tweets/naked trampolining were all part of a sinister strategy to make him appear more like an eccentric uncle than the embodiment of terror many wish to paint him as. Given that this is a man who may one day be Taoiseach (possibly our next Taoiseach?) can anybody seriously be suggesting that a team of political media strategists would advise such an approach? The media attacks on Sinn Féin seem to be getting more desperate by the minute, yet the poll ratings rise ever upwards.

Gerry Adams is an enormously intelligent man, who recently seems to have adopted a Discordian approach to his media image. Less Éire more Eris it would seem.

Incidentally, try Googling the word ‘Taoiseach’ and see what suggestions you get offered…
