They still want an an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.
Revenge seems to be the motto .The argument about” what a victim is ” is still fastened to the lips of William McCrea’s own Democratic Unionist Party {DUP}. They cannot move on without a definition set down in law that proclaims exactly what a “victim of the Troubles” actually means. They doubtless obsess about this definition because they want us all to believe that a victim is someone who has been at the receiving end of non-state violence alone. In their mind’s the state is unblemished and therefore their kith and kin in its forces are also unstained. That sets up a few puzzling conundrums, for sure.
Recently ,the same William Mc Crea who at one time ,shared a platform with a known terrorist killer has said….
“It is immoral that the current definition places the perpetrator and the victim on a par.“It is unacceptable that the terrorist pulling the trigger should be treated the same way as the innocent victim.”
Now I have no idea as to the personal morality of William McCrea. What I do know about him has been gleaned from the public media. His close friends and allies might know a man that you or I have never seen. He had worked as a civil servant before involving and devoting himself to right-wing unionist politics , becoming an MP connected to the Democratic Unionist Party .He has had some religious fixations expressed in his role as a Free Presbyterian Minister which would also find little purchase in a questing mind. My understanding is that he professes to be a Christian although he seems to favour a more Old Testament , pre-Christian aspiration. Those old revenge tracts seem to better fit his ilk than the forgiving indulgences of a Jesus Christ. .He is also something of a gospel singer of some unquenchable sanctimony. This Irish/C ountry variation on the territory of Mahalia Jackson and the Staple Singers is guaranteed to leave lovers of real gospel music tearing their collective hair out .It is a lugubrious and over- sanctimoniously sweetened version of same.
Mr McCrea’s real claim to fame is his association with Loyalist and Unionist paramilitaries. His attachment to religious morality seems to have been no barrier to him becoming a member of the Shankhill Defence Association. In 1971, he was convicted of riotous behaviour in Dungiven which probably did his inherent policital leanings a certain amount of good.
Later in 1975 he led a prayer service at the paramilitary funerals of Wesley Somerville and Harris Boyle. .You might think that it is a very forgiving thing to do.While most of us spent our days and nights working hard to put bread on the table and attemped to keep within the moral law, working for our families and hurting no one, here was a man giving succour at the deaths of these two men.Well you might think that until you heard that these two men had been responsible for the murdering of members of a pop group .Yes …a pop group.
This was no military or “republican” target .The people these two “upright citizens” had murdered were musicians travelling as members of the “Miami” showband . This band was possibly one of the best little touring cabaret and dance bands of its type ,at the time .Their handsome , smiling faces would have been seen regularly in “Spotlight” , Ireland’s pop music newstand magazine .We mightn’t have revered them like rock musicians Rory Gallagher, Thin Lizzy, Van Morrison, Horslips or Planxty , but they were the popular ones who featured in the local adverts in our small local press; the ones who kept the dancers dancing in the hotels at the weekends They played across Ireland and were respected and loved , as popular musicians, though . They had no political axe to grind , either. This wasn’t a John Lennon, supporting every left-wing cause he could conjure up. Who would have time, as a working musician to do anything else, other than drive and play? They would only have had a notional idea of the deep hatreds masquerading as society in Norneverland from their vantage point onstage..
The two men who had murdered the band members were blown up themselves while planting a bomb in the group’s van.You have to ask yourself what was going on in these peoples ‘ minds? Were they irrational., insane or just plain bad…Or were they a product of a very twisted society ? It went something like this:
In July 1975 the band had been working hard, playing at a date in Banbridge , near Newry and were probably tired , heading home in the band minibus like a thousand other pop groups, to their families in Dublin , when they were stopped by one of the, then, ubiquitous moveable army checkpoints .The persons who stopped them wore British Army uniforms. The band were lined up by the roadside , on that summer night , probably bored and shuffling their feet and yawning at this unwanted interception .This was actually an Ulster Volunteer Force group{UVF} they had encountered, but at least four of them were also members of the Ulster Defence Regiment{UDR} .The two groups were almost interchangeable, it seems, being drawn from the same basic gene-pool .You might say they had secret identities like comic superheroes. For whatever reason they were setting up a bomb to kill this band of musicians but it exploded while two them {Mr McCrea’s erstwhile friends, Wesley Somerville and Harris Boyle} somehow exploded it prematurely, killing themselves. In the ensuing melee, the other “soldiers” strafed the band members, killing three of them and wounding two .
Two British soldiers and one former British soldier were later found guilty of the murders .They received life sentences but they were released in 1998.
There was obviously some form of communication or collusion involved in these murders between the British Army at some level and Mr. McCrea’s friends .To this day rumours persist and are believed across the board. The infamous Captain Robert Nairac of the British Army, is said to have been involved in collaboration with the UVF’s Mid-Ulster Brigade and its commander Robin ‘the Jackal’ Jackson.Jackson has been connected to around fifty killings of innocent Catholics in Mid-Ulster . He was succeeded as leader of the Mid-Ulster UVF by Billy Wright.Mr Wright was also known by the appellation “King Rat”, so you can see there was a great love of the alter-ego running through Norneverland secret loyalist groupings . It probably made them seem like folk heroes such as Robin Hood or Billy the Kid.
The Historical Enquiries Team, which investigated the killings, released their report to the victims’ families four years ago , in December 2011. It confirmed that Jackson was linked to the attack by fingerprints found at the scene and there are claims that those involved in the Miami Showband killings belonged to the “Glenanne gang”; a secret alliance of loyalist militants, rogue police officers and British soldiers.
The whole Miami Showband horror is seen, in retrospect as one of those incidents that are a template for the thuggery and ambivalence of state “morality” .
This was the kind of company that William McCrea flirted with .
He attracted enemies because of this , of course, and a parcel bomb was later posted to his home on “Internment Day” the 9th August 1988 by the Irish Peoples Liberation Organisation {the IPLO} , a republican grouping .Later , at the height of the Orange Order’s Drumcree debacle in Portadown he shared a platform at a Portadown rally with the known terrorist Billy Wright in September 1996.At the time is was widely assumed that Wright was a member of the Loyalist Volunteer Force and was responsible for many murders. Huge numbers of people supporting this rally obviously thought it was true and were equally supporting murder. Recently it has been revealed from the Northern Ireland Office that a memo released under the thirty-year rule in December 2014 revealed that Mr McCrea had also called for British military aircraft to carry out “strikes against Dundalk, Drogheda, and Crossmaglen. This is the kind of man we are talking about.Curious behaviour for any devout cheek-turning , Christian , to be sure.
What this all amounts to is a man with only a fleeting idea of what “morality” actually is .It is a morality that suits his own political agenda, of course. This is a man who has no problem associating with specific criminal elements as long as they can be reliant co-conspirators or political allies.
You might argue that we are all products of our evolutionary environment and that the madness that consumes someone like an evangelical Billy Wright , Ian Paisley or a Robin Jackson, isn’t much different than the same madness that lived in Charles Manson and his murdering “Family” or Peter Sutcliffe the Yorkshire Ripper . You might even argue that they were all “victims” of circumstance. Would they have been so jnfected by this madness had they been born and lived elsewhere?
Where do we draw a line. Willie McCrea is obviously a “victim” of his own background too.Who else would choose a life or such a conflicted persona as his? He is obviously a man who has only a passing idea of the difference between right and wrong. If it is fine to see the likes of his own dead political/ militaristic accomplices as forgiven victims of circumstance , surely that should be true right across the board …with no exception.?
Then again, the new regulations that the DUP proposes ….that any paramilitaries whether loyalist or Republican are not in any way “victims” of their circumstances, even though their aims were supported across the communities, and in fact the now existing power-bases of both unionism and republicanism were built on their backs.
The republicans in Sinn Fein honestly know this but are attempting to grow beyond it , but the DUP would rather not think too hard about it at all.

Harry, this brand of collective bigotry is not unique to our environs, just think of the Nazis. I for one am fed up pandering to them. Their stupid bigoted statements deserve greater scrutiny from the press: I know, some chance. How can we seriously reconcile with people who cannot accept what a rotten, corrupt, and bigoted little entity they administered ? Loyalist terrorists and British terrorists are two sides of the same coin. Sinn Fein want to deal with Unionist politicians wearing their kid gloves for fear they may offend the greater Loyalist community. I think we have bent over enough.
Environs rather.
We are all victims of the circumstance that we live in N Ireland, but that does not mean we don’t know the difference between right and wrong.
McCrea seems to spend most of his life associating himself with known cold-blooded loyalist killers so in my opinion he bears the same guilt that they do.
Possibly some day the law will come to that conclusion also.
Read the book The Miami Showband Massacre, written by a band member who was riddled with bullets, left for dead, but miraculously escaped.
He wrote that the man giving the orders wore a BA uniform and had an English accent. He believed he was SAS officer Robert Niarac. The minibus was driving South, so the intention was that the bomb would explode in the South and it would be assumed that the band were carrying explosives. One of the Loyalist sectarian killers, was a co-called ‘Born Again Christian ‘ more hypocrisy. This was another case of collusion, moreso it was paramilitaries acting as agents for British Intelligence.
“We mightn’t have revered them like rock musicians, Rory Gallagher, Thin Lizzy, Van Morrison, Horslips or Planxty…”
Perhaps not Harry but, ironically, they were certainly revered by the very rock stars you name above!
Rory Gallagher admired The Miami Showband lead guitarist, Tony Geraghty, (murdered that night) so much, that he gave Tony one of his precious Vox AC 30 amplifiers as a gift in appreciation of Tony’s brilliant rock and jazz playing.
Thin Lizzy icon, Phil Lynott, referred to The Miami Showband lead singer, Fran O’Toole (murdered that night) as “the greatest Soul singer Ireland ever produced”.
Horslips bass guitarist, Barry Devlin, admired The Miami Showband bass guitarist, Stephen Travers (seriously wounded that night) so much that he contracted him to play bass on his own solo album “Breaking Star Codes”.
There was huge interaction between the Showbands and the “revered” Rock bands…far too much to go into here but I’ll leave you with this Harry; The Miami Showband bass guitarist, Stephen Travers, was first introduced to his long-time musical partner, Horslips’ lead guitarist Johnny Fean, by none other than their mutual friend, Rory Gallagher, while in the company of Van Morrison in The Country Club, Portmarnock, Christmas 1975.
“…possibly one of the best little touring, cabaret and dance bands of its type, at the time”???
Just setting the record straight about great, working musicians that cared more about their families and paying the mortgage than being revered as rock stars.
Stephen Travers
Miami Showband Bass Guitarist 1975
PS we loved Planxty, especially our old pal Christy Moore.
Lovely to see you posting here Stephen, and I’m very sorry for the horror and loss you experienced that day.
The whole showband vs ‘respected’ bands argument is an interesting one, so I find it fascinating to hear your take on things. In addition to the examples you cited above, when you consider all the people Henry McCullough ended up working with, I think to view the showband scene as somehow inferior to the ‘revered’ rock scene is wrong.
On top of Rory, Philo and the others you mention there’s Gary Moore, Brush Shiels and numerous other crossovers between the showband scene, the blues scene, the folk scene, the psych/hippy scene and more.
Music tends to be a fairly fluid thing, and musicians tend to be fairly open to all sorts so it’s great to hear your first hand take on it. And yes, Planxty are wonderful.
Whoa ….Stephen!!! Before we take the whole gist of the piece in another direction entirely…as an aside….There’s no way I was criticising the musicianship of the Miami showband .I’m well aware that a musician, is a musician, is a musician and i know that there was plenty of cross-fertilisation between musicians across the board. As you say, Rory came up through the ranks and there was great admiration for particular players between players .What I’m saying is that in the context of the times, somebody like Rory who had broken away from the grind of dances and dance halls with Taste … to filling the Ulster Hall or playing the Isle of Wight Festival and blowing all the other major rock acts off the stage….. or Van who’d been in a blues band and by then had already produced Astral Weeks and Moondance…. were in a different kind of league, in our long-haired minds .We had their albums in our record collections .We sat down and listened to them in concert halls…The Miami were seen as a gigging dance-band …and a good one, too, but that’s not the same thing..
Good post Stephen.
Without getting into a whole mess of “whataboutery” , I really am quite amazed that the media continually bang on about Gerry Adams and his supposed leadership of the IRA , which is something that will always be a”secret” anyway….but they leave the likes of Willie McCrea unstudied . What drives me is curiosity, really. Why has no investigative reporter dug into these DUP puzzles. For example , where are the exact connections between the likes of McCrea and Billy Wright? For sure , it was reported that he appeared on a platform with him but how was that actually set up.At the time of Billy Wright’s death it was reported too that the town was basically sealed off. I don’t remember any outcry about that either.I mean , this guy was apparently a known murderer, so who was responsible for policing the town ?
There must have been connections between the DUP and loyalist terrorists that have never been properly teased out. I remember once years and years ago while the Troubles were at their worst ,staying in a little cottage just off the beach in Portrush on holiday{ the little cottage is long-gone in a development}.One evening the little house next door was visited by a group of seriously dangerous, furtive – looking men . Peter Robinson was in the midst of them. All unseasonally dressed in black coats. I often wondered what they were doing in a very obvious “holiday situation”, dressed as they were for “business”…..What took them to this remote spot ?….Curiosity , y’see….
McCrea worked in Magherafelt “broo” office and was barely noticed by his mostly women co workers until one day he announced he was going away “to become a minister of the gospel”.The office staff in their innocence organised a collection to help this young fellow pursue his long years of study but were amazed to see him parading round Magherafelt within months with a dog collar on.He became a “reverand” after spending a few weeks at the Bob Jones or similar institution in the US bible belt and was mocked by those he had previously worked with.
I love that ,Michael. It’s that background detail I love to hear about …another “Bob- A -Job” God Worrier…ha , ha…
And not only DUP politicians! The Committee by Sean Mc Philemy, political assassination in Northern Ireland (Roberts Rinehart Publishers) lifts the lid on how the ruling class organized politically motivated sectarian murders.
The Committee was the Ulster Loyalist Central Co-ordinating Committee. According to Mc Philemy , it had a membership of about sixty draw from ” the business community, the professions,
Loyalist paramilitary groups such as the
Ulster Volunteer Force and the Ulster
Freedom Fighters and most significantly
from the higher ranks of the locally recruited security forces, the Ulster Defence Regiment (UDR ) and the Royal Ulster Constabulary (RUC).”
According to Mc Philemy it was the ‘branching’ of the Billy Abernethy, manager in the head office in Belfast of the Ulster Bank; also Abernethy had forged a close relationship with one of the most senior officers in of the RUC and a former head of RUC Special Branch, he was Assistant Chief Constable, he was Trevor Forbes OBE. this secret committee planned the murder of Catholics. I would recommend to anyone who seeks an understanding of the unseen hand directing sectarian murder in the Occupied part of our country to study this book, not least the involvement of a future Nobel Peace winner!
People need to realise the likes of Wright,Jackson,Somerville etc did not spring up out of nowhere and start killing people in a fit of madness. These people were enlisted directly and indirectly by the British state services to carry out an age old tactic they have patented the world over ie undermine the native insurgents by whatever means possible. Be that overtly inflicting sheer terror on the community they come from or covertly by dirty tricks.
It’s just before my time, but it seems the timeline of mcgurks bar and the Miami showband incident could possibly have been a tactic by the Brits to carry out this policy. After all mcgurks bar was held aloft as an IRA own goal and the suspicion was that the showband was to have met the same fate. These acts would have angered and horrified the community the IRA operated from and that would have been the ultimate objective.
Unionists of a military persuasion would know this hence the reluctance by unionists of today from shining a light on these activities. Hence the deafening silence when the UVF plaques are mounted on memorials that are supposed to be for the British army. Hence the reluctance to put these groups out of business nowadays, ie the state forces may still need them to do dirty jobs for the state.
To dismiss these people as simply psychopaths allows the British state to escape culpability. They were a tool of the state and were encouraged to be ‘psychos’ in their acts by the state, in their objective of inflicting terror on the whole native population. In reality these ‘psychos’ probably believed they were soldiers of the crown. Why would they have thought any different?
Well, Wolfe tone , much of what you say might be the complete truth, but Stephen Travers has very eloquently put his views on record here and on the links he so kindly provided. The British establishment and the military were playing dirty tricks , obviously, as they have always done in every conflict, but Stephen is the only one on this page to actually bear personal witness to this particular atrocity. I was in England at the time, working and thinking about going to see Pink Floyd at Knebworth sometime soon . Stephen experienced the obscenity of it in the raw blood and bone moment on that summer night . Who better to tell his own story.A military “soldier” might kill in conflict but it takes a particular kind of individual to do more than simple killing. When , as Stephen has put it , an individual pumped bullet after bullet into Fran O’Toole face and body , he wasn’t just killing him .He was hating him in a way that appears to verge on the psychopathic ,too. This whole conflict was driven very much by a primitive hatred as much as by anything else.
Paddycool, the way I see it these ‘psychos’ are no different to the brit soldier who recently was caught on camera when he murdered a suspected Taliban prisoner. They are no different to the brit soldiers who pumped bullets into captured IRA men and women during the last conflict. Or indeed the Brit soldier who dragged an injured IRA captive and threw him back into the burning car he had alighted from. My point is the British have taught their soldiers to be more ruthless than the enemy and therefore Wright,Somerville and co would be quietly extolled as proper British soldiers by the community they come from. To simply excuse these people as manic loyalist terrorists allows the British state and unionism to wash their hands of responsibility. To steal a quote from David Trimble, ‘they are inextricably linked’.
The ruthless Brit soldier and the ruthless loyalist terrorist who both pump bullets into their prey probably have the same mentality driving them ie the dehumanising of their foe?
There is no doubt that Mc Gurks bar bombing was not an ‘own goal’ by the IRA. There is reason to believe it was a ‘black op’, performed by agents of British military Intelligence. As Wolf Tone commented McGurks bar and the Miami Showband massacre happened in the same timeline, the 70s. The sectarian murders ordered by the ULCCC, the ‘Committee’, happened in the 90s. In the 70s the military command were working on Kitson’s principle of ‘Counter-gangs’,used by him in Kenya in the 50s against the insurgents in the so-called ‘Mau Mau’ rebellion. Their objectives were to stir up sectarian conflict, so that a national liberation war would be seen as a sectarian conflict and ‘turn’ captured insurgents into touts, agents and rougue operators (‘Freds’) to carry out ‘black ops’.
In the 90 the Unionists of the same social class as those that founded the original UVF in 1913, did not trust the British Government not to concede constitutional changes, that would lead to a united Ireland. They initiated a campaign of murder against the Nationalist community and republican public representatives.
I believe there is a connection between the abuse of children at Kincora and some members of the Committee (ULCCC). That’s another reason that the British Government don’t want Kincora included in the UK Inquiry into child sexual abuse.
