OK – sit up straight and listen.
I’m truly pleased to see vigorous discussion of different blogs, including the points made by those I’d disagree with (maybe especially by those I’d disagree with). But can we perhaps pull back on name-calling or even coarseness. Calling someone a ‘tube’, or using the word ‘fuck’ when another word would serve equally well or better – let’s keep that sort of thing out. Besides being more civilised, it’ll allow people to focus on the content of what is being said, rather than distracted by the gratuitous insult or the unnecessary Anglo-Saxon four-letter inclusion.
Right – class dismissed.

Totally agree with the use or abuse of that vile word Jude ,but a recent study found that it is the most easily pronounceable word to the majority of the worlds population. In fits of irrationality ,I prefer to use the Irish word “Feic” (see ) or Feicim ( I see) as an expletive …. that is after counting a h-aon .a dó etc etc
Seamus- I have no problem with use of the word ‘fuck’ or other Anglo-Saxon expletives – in fact I use them in speech with alarming regularity, and they can be used in print with devastating effect. But I don’t see this as a comfortable home for such words. In fact it gives the impression of being careless with words.
Hi Jude, Yes I’m still here and I’ll have a story or two soon. Yes the word “fuck” is a much-used word , having seemingly long-since strayed away from its proper usage as in “to rut ” or to have riotous sex of the two -humped beast variety. I have to say it has its place and when used properly can still be of great effect even out of that particular context. Itis wasted when used as a substitute for the humble comma in everyday conversation. though.
This forum is not the place for easy insults , just as it is not the place for sloganising or one-line replies.[unless delivered in the delightful style of our friend jim.hunter}… although. Insults delivered with a modicum of wit are another thing , of course , but that is a skill in itself and can easily be lost on some, in the cold light of print.
Now , calling someone a “tube” is just schoolboyishly asinine and stands out like an unwanted comma in a greengrocer’s window display…just as “too”, “to” and “two” or “their” and “there” really rattle my cage when used inappropriately. “Fuck” on the other hand is one great standalone word and easily bests the neutered “feic”. My own personal derivitive is “fuc”. It could hardly offend, now, could it?
Jude, it seems then that you’re not trying to emulate that aberration of a tv programme by that erudite gent Stephen Nolan, which seemed to concentrate on the two females who were the most proficient I have ever heard in the use of that word.
Had it been removed from their vocabulary they would have been struck virtually dumb.
I think I missed that one…
