Don’t tell me that Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) man Sammy(there’s no such thing as Global Warming) Wilson ,has agreed with comments of a racist nature .It appears so at first hearing .Should any of us be surprised? I don’t really think so .This seems to be only more in a long litany of similar comments from DUP ministers who are having problems dealing with the modern world and the racial mix that has changed society here . Someone should make a list.Maybe start it with “Save Ulster From Sodomy” and go from there. It would make grim reading.
I’ve got to tell you that i’d almost despaired of some of our ministers not putting their huge feet in their mouths anytime soon. I wondered had they been instructed by their party leader Arlene Foster to just shut their mouths and say nothing that might rock the boat. Just shut the fuc up for a month or so before the buggers laugh us out of town!!
I was all at sea for maybe two or three weeks there. Life had become somewhat boring without the normal political freakshow of wittering malcontents that we’ve grown used to.Where were the obnoxious neanderthal clowns we had as our daily bread for entertainment? Where were our DUP ministers with their flat-earth minds? Why were they so quiet? Nelson McCausland was wittering on television a couple of weeks ago, smirking and chittering like some pubescent schoolgirl about a comic he wanted censored because he didn’t like the content. He was like Dr Frederic Wertham banning horror comics in the 1950s, but that was small potatoes.
We know how the DUP feel about muslims, gays , Charles Darwin , Nelson Mandela , David Attenborough , the Irish language , nationalists …and anyone else who isn’t a narrow -minded conservative bigot. It’s obvious Sammy believes he is somewhat witty , if only in a broad cack-handed, gormless sort of way . He may well be a personable sort of character in a social situation , albeit with an inflated sense of himself and his own omnipotence , but now he appears to have come out as a closet -racist too. I don’t believe too many will be surprised, if I’m honest .I’m not saying that racism doesn’t manifest itself right across the political divide in Norneverland. It’s there in casual unvarnished , quiet conversations across the board, but it appears to be very apparent within the DUP. Whether it should be part of any politician’s vocabulary in any modern government is another thing.
If someone ,in any other place other than Norneverland uttered such thoughts aloud, alarm bells would ring loudly , he would be opposed by every right-thinking person in the community and suspended from his position immediately until the evidence was studied. His flippant response was to blame the messenger.Either he agrees with these statements and simply let his guard down on this occasion ,while thinking he was off-camera, or he doesn’t believe them at all .In which case the (agreement)statement should not have been uttered at all .
It would be difficult to make a positive case for Sammy in this context. He simply didn’t disagree with the statement.Had he been in a Westminster cabinet he would have been forced to resign as a racist. His actions could not be interpreted in any other way.
There hasn’t been an apology from either the DUP or Sammy Wilson .There has been a carefully semantically structured response issued as a holding measure by the party to avoid any judgement of their party member. They have not condemned him in any way.Maybe they are hoping that it will all blow away in the wind.At the moment, though , he appears to be at odds with his party’s stance.
For such a statement to come from the mouth of a DUP member needs much more than an apology but it does open up the debate about the racism that appears to be inherent in Norneverland.

What the politicians in NI get away with is astounding.
Imagine if they had a real country to run?!
Indeed ,Am Ghob….The reality is that they get away with blue murder. In one breath the BBC is being blamed for not “outing” Jimmy Savile more successfully back in the the glorious politically incorrect and paedophile years of the Black and White Minstrel Show and rampant misogny.. and then when they get it right and “out” Sammy ,they are blamed for “having an agenda”.My take on it is that a politician needs to be first and foremost as slippery as an eel, but he also needs to keep an eye on everything that he says..He daren’t even think some kinds of thoughts…they would be verboten to a normal politician in any other context. In Norneverland they are so used to defaming one group after another that they think it is perfectly fine to do so…and sometimes a line or a phrase will slip out unheeded ….like the 2shops and the muslims”…or “the Spawnof Satan” or “Curry my Coca Cola” …all dumb fucwit stuff usually .The problem is that they are allowed to do so….constantly ..time and time again.Like i say….get the list out ….and paste it up with the names attached.
Perhaps the MP thought he was participating in an Irish version of ‘the White People’s Choice Awards.’ Some commentators note that such a comment would trigger a resignation at Westminster. It would appear that the north of Ireland is not as British as Finchley.
Unfortunately it’s the world view of political unionism. The view from under the forest canapé. We have witnessed the lost tribes of the Amazon come out into the bright light of the modern world, blinking and incredulous. Unionism is still in there.
I do like that “forest canapé” Freddie…intentional ,I trust?
“Imagine if they had a real country to run?!”
I also feel like I don’t have a country AG.
Perhaps if we had a unified country a lot of things would be better don’t you think?
Well Jessica, “Norneverland” is a mythical state of affairs …much like Lilliput or Alice’s Wonderland or the Looking -Glass World ,but it could never by any stretch of my particular imagination be described as a “country”…which brings me neatly to the trail for the Nolan Show on the morning radio….what does it actually mean when they say … that it’s “the biggest show in the country” ? …I tend to wonder about stuff like that….
Of course its the BBC’s fault that Sammy Wilson is a racist bigot! Sammy couldn’t be expected to think up any beliefs on his own.
Such a lot of nonsense we are told by Sammy, his DUP party and leader – and they think people will believe it!
Its not so many years since unionists of every hue were burning their Catholic neighbours out of their homes just because of their religion.
So its no stretch of the imagination that these same Neanderthals think ‘ethnics’ should be got rid of as well.
But the fact that Sammy had been miked up for his interview and thought he could come off with such racist language and not be held to account shows how racism and stupidity seem to go hand in hand.
And the fact that no condemnation of Sammy’s outburst has come from his DUP party or leader Arlene speaks very loud and clear that Sammy’s views are not entirely his own!
What was it David Trimble said some years ago about people needing house trained?
Harry for those of us not familiar with the situation there please tells us what this guy Wilson actually did.
And of course the context in which he did it.
Sorry Jim …I just assumed that in these days of joined up internet we all just googled everything and knew what everyone was thinking….no I jest…Here’s the context :
“BBC Spotlight journalist Conor Spackman explained the background to the incident.
“He [Sammy Wilson] and I were filmed walking around Carrickfergus market talking to members of the public,” he said.
“At one point he stopped to talk to a man and I walked on. Mr Wilson then had a conversation with the man out of my earshot.
“At the time he was still being recorded.
“In part of the conversation, Mr Wilson said: “They are doing a programme on the BBC about should we stay in the European Union or get out of it, so I am going around talking to people and then they are going to do an interview with me.”
The man replied: “I’d say get out of it. Between you and me get the ethnics out too.”
Mr Wilson then said: “You are absolutely right, you know.”
He did claim that he had not properly registered the get rid of the ethnics part and his enthusiastic absolutely comment was referring to the brexit and the fact it came immediately after the slur was just unfortunate.
Looks like another politician wont be around for much longer, seeing he is about to be part of an investigation into the nama sale, inappropriate behaviour seems to be catching up with him.
He also went to Nigel Dodds about how to deal with it and never spoke to Arlene.
Obviously some issues there also.
Jessica, you wonder about Slippery Sammy going to Dodgy Dodds instead of Arlene.
The bubbling under the surface problem in the DUP is that their Westminster MPs think that they can get the upper hand over the NI management of the party.
As you are aware they claim to be all in favour of Brexit, knowing that locally that idea is not so popular in the party, and especially with the likes of Arlene and her rural constituency.
But the MP faction put the gun to her head and came out publicly with their stance, and Arlene was presented with a fait accompli.
She will not forgive them easily! Hell hath no fury . . .
what ever happened to freedom of speech, imo sammys saying what the majority of people here are thinking this is the main reason brexit is here.is it racist to put irish people first not in my book its not.
Well Billy …yes it is actually racist to put Irish people first. That is exactly what racism…favouritism…nepotism is in a mixed race and mixed cultural society. In other words the modern world you are living in.There are too many who think they can be more equal than the next guy which is why we have laws to protect us all equally …no matter your origin your background or the colour of your skin.If the guy has the smarts to do the job is what is important…not where he happens to have been born.
if the guy has the smarts to do the job is what is important…….
well if they have a job to come to,house ect sorted then as you say it doesnt matter where they happen to be born. however when we have irish fellas dying in the doorways of belast and dublin while millions are being handed to migrants theres something wrong, its hardly racist wanting these wrongs put right.
Well billy ..
that’s another topic to introduce into the conversation .It is said that any one of us is a mere wage -packet or possibly two away from the prospect of abject homelessness. Depending on a variety of financial, emotional and mental health issues it can be the ultimate destination of anyone’s life ,given the right /wrong circumstances. It could be divorce, financial breakdown, family breakdown or a variety of physical problems that causes people to run away or fall and get lost through the cracks..I dare say that it would be educational to hear the various origin stories of any of those living in doorways or in the shadows of society. Many die in those circumstances. That problem has been with us a long time whether or not there are immigrants arriving or leaving . We’ve had generations of Italians, Indians, Pakistanis, Chinese coming here Ireland ,for a hundred years and we’ve had Irish , Scots , Welsh and English heading for Australia , America and everywhere else….and we’ve always had homelessness. They used to be called “tramps” in a more politically incorrect time.
Most of the kind of people who are prepared to upsticks and travel across the world from wherever they originate are usually highly -motivated types who have a reason to leave …as in getting away from conflict or a dead-end ….people . who are prepared to work hard and make a better life for themselves. Take a look at the Italian and Chinese families who are prepared to work hard ,late into the night running takeaways and restaurants .Their children might be born Irish and continue to contribute to our society and enrich it…strengthen it in fact. At the moment we have Poles and Russians …Vietnamese …working alongside every other colour and creed in shops, offices, industry and building sites. They are not being carried as ballast . They are contributing to our society and enriching it.
“what ever happened to freedom of speech, imo sammys saying what the majority of people here are thinking this is the main reason brexit is here.is it racist to put irish people first not in my book its not.”
You think the reason he was supporting a brexit billy, is to put irish people first?
But if you don’t vote, how can you say you are putting anyone first?
No part of Ireland is a part of Britain. The british people need to decide for themselves what they want to do. If it goes pear shared, we have an opt out clause in the GFA.
Surely you are not saying you wont vote in Irish elections but are planning to vote for a brexit?
sammy would hardly be putting irish people first,as for voting i have no vote in irish elections as for brexit no i will be away fishing that day more important than lending my vote to pull england out of a hole dont you think.
Today Sammy comes out with racist comments. Although he informed William Crawley that he couldn’t be because he rents out property to some Johnny Foreigner types. yesterday he along with others in dup and their fellow travellers are shown to have been up to no good with regards to NAMA. I’m thinking Sammy must have known this expose was in the offing and that is why he didn’t stand for leadership election. Perhaps Peter and Gareth knew shit was going to hit the fan as well. I hope the broadcasters and journalists show as much diligence getting to the bottom of this murky NAMA business as they did in Tom Murphys case.
Yiz have got it all wrong. Sammy was agreeing to the first question. Didn’t he explain it all on the radio. Maybe he was referring to the ethnic British in the colony here.
If you listen to the recording, it’s perfectly obvious what he’s in total agreement with…
Careful fiosrach…you know how irony gets lost on the web…someone might take you seriously!
I could not agree more with the commentator, nor Sammy, let’s start with the scot’s living here first, they’ve had five hundred years, time for peace, time to go!
The unmentioned side in this, Jude may have a better idea on this is, the event occurred three weeks ago, plenty of time to let Sammy know it was coming and prepare his defence!
Are these the rantings of a dying ideology or the rantings of a dying political career? Either way its another illumination of the crass bigotry so prevalent among those who don’t believe they live in Ireland, even though they live in Ireland.
Sammy has form with regard to this. I’m thinking of his “Taigs don’t pay rates” ! and”seal off the townships” utterances.
paddy
Good piece and I wholly agree.
How must it feel to be a member of an ethnic minority community living here, perhaps in a DUP stronghold?
Sammy Wilson may be a clown, but he is not funny.
Thanks gio….mind it’s one thing pointing out Sammy’s crassness and watching him wriggle when it is patently obvious he’d been hooked, gaffed and netted, but it’s a sad state of affairs when his party hasn’t the morality to condem him whole-heartedly. Their statement was a patchwork of semantics. The bigger question to be asked is whether or not people even realise what racism involves…and billy flagged it up …. and how it operates on the fear of the “other”.Take a word like “ethnics” and think about how it is being used. We’re talking here about new citizens and new neighbours …not some weird and alien species from outer space who should stand at the back of the queue behind the “native” Irish, English, Welsh or Scots when it comes to needs.
Every one of us has an immigrant history .Every one of us has immigrant ancestors.
You is da main man, ‘arry, if ya know wot I mean.
For bringing to one’s notice the latest nuanced outpourings of the Pure Mind known to us down here in the Free Southern Stateen, as ‘ Wee Sommy Woolson’.
For those of us dependent upon the Norneverland correspondents of The Unionist Times and its broadcasting wing of record, RTE ( Gerry Moriar.IT and Tomm.ie Gorman, respectively) to bring us tidings from the other sidings, we would have missed the up-to-date wisdom of WSW.
These two informally named Nor Cors were (understandably) otherwise engaged in busily informing us of the latest fall from financial grace of the ‘SLABILITY’ proponents, not to mention the profoundly satisfied reaction of Missy Dissy, bound surely for the next Nobel Prize for the Dissmal Science.
Which is a great pity, not to mention deprivation for those of us down here who are devoted afficionados of the slick Six County style of comedy, and counting. Of whom Wee Sommy is surely the leading exponent.
Those of us fortunate enough to catch the lordly yet subtle demolition job he once did in his Mayoralty office on camera on an oh-so-obvious impostor from London, dearie , can ever ever forget it? The fraud in q. being a faux-spokesman for Da Voice of Yoof called Ali G or something.
-So, you is Irish.
-No, I’m British.
-So, you is here on holidays?
-Norneverland. has.always. been. a. part.of Britain.
Was the devastating retort from. the witty Wee Sommy who had to slow down his regular rapid fire repartee so that the slow-witted joker in shiny tracksuit, bobble hat and shades could.get. the. drift. of. what. he .was. being. told. In fact the only thing quick about the dead-head dude on the other side of the desk were his dip-snap hand gestures..
In fact, the dim-witted omadawn from over the water repeatedly confused the R.U.C. with the R.A.C. and couldn’t quite work out why the locals were stoning the repair men who had come to tow away their broken-down cars.
-Is it cause they is late, or somefing?
It took the sly yet kindly Sommy to lighten the tone by cracking a real crocker of a joke. Involving the Rev Ian, the swomming across of the Irish Sea, crocodiles and the wearing of a T-for-Taigue Shirt which read ‘i love the Pope’.
it would be unfair to even attempt to retell the joke in full as that would not remotely begin to scratch the uproarious surface of Wee Sommy’s comedic delivery. Check it out on youtube, chekh it out, it’s a real crocker.
Time surely for RTE to invite the island’s stand out Stand-up Ovationist to have his own late nite slot. Involving his legendary sketch in which he is seen chasing a naked butterfly in a grassy meadow – was it in the, erm, Rhonnda Valley?
Respek.
That was a cracker Perkin, poor wee Sammy hadn’t a clue and, presumably, still doesn’t!!
Ahh Mighty Perk …many thanks for your gracious contribution. None of us are worthy of your divine scrutiny.I can only add in the way of illustrating your piece ..the following item …forever …and for all time it appears still blinking righteously like a lambent star in the far reaches of the internet….
[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n4TeNAT0Uc4&w=640&h=360%5D
Ah, Harry absolute classic. It should find its way into every Christmas compendium. Sammy’s complete lack of worldliness is astonishing. He really believes he knows the score because he can get a few laughs at the “Hillbilly of the year” awards, but living in the Narnia snow-dome, with its glass walls has led to a small mind, cluttered only by red faced Lambeggers and dead ends.
Just been catching up with yesterday’s Parliamentlive – poor old Margaret Richie was having a bad time contending with – not only Sammy – but surprisingly Lady Sylvia as well!
You’re watching PARLIAMENT LIVE, myles?? You’ll have to get out more…
