“This is ‘Caker’ Casey Snr., whose son, Caker jnr., painted the original gable end – ‘You are now entering Free Derry’ ,one of the leading tourist attractions in the NW. Phil Coulter thinks that this pic embodies the spirit he was communicating in the line … ‘and then walked the dog’ from his song , ‘The Town I loved so well’.Both Caker Snr and Jnr are now deceased. The picture was taken about 1969 during the redevelopment of the Bogside area . For interest, I was using a Pentax Spotmatic with 50 MM. lens.“

“We have been pampering ourselves for a few days at the splendid Glengarry Castle Hotel in the NW Highlands. The cliched Eilean Donan castle is just a short drive along the majestically scenic Road to the Isles.”

“Why do the people leave and where have they gone?”

“I’ve visitors with me this week so didn’t get out with the camera. All these photos were taken in the field at the front of my house over the last seven days. Pics 4 and 5 are of a female sparrowhawk, Pics 6 and 7 a fox at midnight, Pics 8 and 9 show a buzzard worming for breakfast, Pics 10 and 11 black-headed gulls at sunset. Pics 12 and 13 were great as I got to sit in the wet grass and watch this wee guy come into the world and Pic 14 was Thursday evenings sunset. I’m so lucky to be surround by so much life and beauty.”

Great , Jude . I love this weekly feature. All life is here in those photos…
A Buzzard enjoying a Diet of Worms?
Which foot does he dig with?
Buzzards are very poor hunters resulting in one kill out of every ten hunts, most of their diet is made up of worms, beetles and carrion (roadkill). Farmers are putting slurry out in the fields at the moment and this brings the worms to the surface and rich pickings for the Buzzards.
Very witty Mr Kennedy, very good sir.
Great pics, and interesting bit of history about Derry.
