Many hard things have been said about Donald Trump, a considerable number of them true. What has been given less attention has been the effect he has had on others.
Trump didn’t devise racist politics in the US but he gave what’s now called “dog-whistle” speeches that didn’t say “Let’s all be racist!” but spoke about Mexicans living in Mexico and Mexicans living in the US in a way that crystallized and legitimized racism. The average dumb red-neck listening to his speeches said aloud or to him/herself “Say, that’s what I bin thinkin’ for a long time. I like this guy!”
And the same goes for his gross male chauvinism. Remember when he insulted the memory of a young Muslim killed while fighting in the US army, and then criticized the man’s father when he objected, by noting that the young man’s mother hadn’t been allowed to give her views to the media? That’s the gentler edge of his chauvinism. The grosser part could be found in that vomit-inducing interview he gave Billy Bush about how to get a woman to do what you want.
And there are lots of other views which indicate that the US and the world have got one of the worst US presidents it could have chosen.
But the most remarkable result of his election is that he’s succeeded in making many, myself included, break many of our central political notions.
For example, most of us normally believe that when a politician is elected, he should deliver on what he promised. In Trump’s case, huge numbers of us are hoping and praying that he doesn’t build a wall between the US and Mexico, tear up the Paris climate-control agreement, ban all Muslims from entering the US. The need for awful things not to happen trumps (yes, Virginia, I know, I know) any argument that politicians should be straight and act on what they promise. I hope devoutly that Trump breaks virtually all of his electoral promises.
Although to be fair to Trump, he’s not the only recent force that has driven liberals and left-leaning people to think in very un-liberal terms. Brexit is another example. I accept that the British people have spoken – or those who voted have – an awful lot didn’t bother voting. But if I thought there was a way that an Irish could played at this point – that is, that the referendum should be re-run until the British people gave us a more thoughtful result – I’d be all for it. And yes, I was contemptuous of the way the Irish people in the south had to re-run their referendum until the result was what the government of the day wanted.
Some people have (very quietly) suggested that Trump, if he acts on what he has said, will be lucky to survive in office. They’re not talking about his political life, they’re talking about his literal flesh-and-blood life. It says something for the detestation I feel towards the man, that I’m not horrified by the idea of his assassination, any more than I was horrified when I read of the attempt by some of his own people to assassinate Hitler.
Appalling? Too right. But when you get boxed into a corner by a man who’s an erratic, racist bully, you begin to think thoughts that set aside the normal conventions of decency and justice. That’s how much Trump has changed me and, I suspect, a great many others.

The US is the greatest war mongering nation and biggest threat to global politics on the face of the planet. Over the last 100yrs take a look at the wars and conflicts it has been involved in both overt and covert. Their military bases around the world number near a thousand with dozens surrounding Russia and China yet they are often cited as the aggressors. They have overthrown many governments in other countries to suit their own agenda. If any other country acted this way there would be sanctions or worse.
They have now elected a president who emboldens their people to treat their own citizens with contempt and often with violence. How will this translate onto the global stage if this us the way they are prepared to treat people under their own roof.
It is a horrible state of affairs, who knows where it will escalate to.
The Wall of The Donald , Esteemed Blogmeister, is fast beginning to rival the Wall of The Charles as perhaps the most significant Wall of All Time in a country whose crucial street is called, erm, Wall Street.
The Charles immortalized his wall when, in the guise of his alter ego, the egotistical Chuck Berry (for it is he !) he ballpointed the following first verse of his song for the ages:
-Long distance information, give me Memphis, Tennessee
Help me find the person trying to get in touch with me
She could not leave her number but I know who placed the call
My uncle took the message and he wrote it on the wall.
For, the last two words in this verse, read:
-The Wall.
The Perkin’s inner poetaster likes to think too that the uncle namechecked here is, in fact:
-Uncle Sam.
For the following reason: quite simply this is a strong yet under-rated candidate for the best quatrain of poetry to have emerged from The Land of Uncle Sam (for it is still it !) since Cole Porter penned this first verse of his imperishable song:
-Every time we say goodbye, I die a little
Every time we say goodbye, I wonder why a little
Why the Gods above us, who must be in the know
Think so little of me, they allow you to go.
Now that ‘the hurly burly’s done, and the battle’s lost and won’ in this, the latest act of, erm, The Scottish Play and the Moneysall Man will soon move into to the White House as the Moneygall Man moves out.
Which, while it is obviously of some moment to The Donald is not without some significance for The Charles (see above) either.
For the following reason: in Ollie Hayes’ pub in Moneygall, County Offaly (politically) / County Tipperary (for hurling purposes) there is a cardboard cut-out figure of the soon- to- be former President Barack O’Bama.
-How very life-like !
Is the common reaction of Hank and Harriet Tourist, The Perkin’s inner bednighter, included. Sadly, it wasn’t till the recent painful campaign appearances of Barack O to appreciate just how life-like the cardboard cut-out figure is.
Was there ever a more unnatural, stiff and contrived performance ever delivered on the hustings of an A-merican Presidential Campaign? Barack O has many fine qualities, but working an audience, sadly, just isn’t one of them: his personality has the essential consistency of a dry stick which is eminently more apt to wave at shelves full of legal tomes than at a blood and flesh gathering. Hardly his fault.
To answer the question posed at the top of the previous paragraph: yes, there was. That was the one delivered by his ever loving wife, Michelle. Whatever hopes she harboured to become the second stage of the Moneygall Dynasty must have been surely dashed by, sadly, her truly dreadful and unearned (who elected her?) appearances on the electioneering podium.
One knows just how awful she was by the tsunami of predictable gush which joyously greeted her in the Aunt Samantha coverage of the Madame-only Media.
It is the latter reality which affects The Charles. Thus:
Earlier this year President Obama opened the National Museum of Afro-American Heritage and Culture at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, DC. One of the prime-located and most popular exhibits is a (gulp) cherry-red Cadillac convertible once owned by (gasp) Chuck Berry.
Woody Allen, in his days as a phenomenal stand-up comedian, used to draw attention, amongst sobs, to his wrist watch. This was not just any wrist watch but a w.w. of great sentimental value. It was a family heirloom going back many generations and was given to him by his favourite grandfather on the latter’s death bed. . And as the last breaths of life leaked out of the old man’s lungs:
-He sold it to me, his favourite grandson – and at a discount.
One mentions this as a way of putting the presence of the cherry-red Cadillac convertible in the new museum in context.. It was, it seems, obtained ‘after protracted negotiations’. Translated into plain jive-talk, this means that Mr. Charles Edward Anderson Berry (for it is also he !) in his kick-ass way, drove a hard bargain, very. And he to be in his 90th Year of the Lord.
-Go, The Chuck !
Fast forward now to the highly unlikely (phew !) eventuality of Mrs. Barack Obama ever taking oval office in Washington, DC. No doubt, in an ironically unconscious parody of a phrase in Old Man River:
-Tote that barge ! Lift that bale !
The (real) First Lady’s first Executive Order would be, even while pointing in the direction of the National Museum of Afro-American Heritage and Culture:
-Tow that Cadillac ! Lift that Convertible !
And, for why?
Well, Old Chuck Berry would not be in especially good odour with the Madames of the Moral High Ground.
Pray, tell.
Where to start? When to finish?
In 1962, Chuck was sentenced to three years in chokey for offences covered by the Mann Act – he had transported a 14 year old Apache waitress across State Lines.
In 1990, he was sued by several women who claimed he had installed a video camera in the ladies’ restroom at his restaurant, The Sunshine Air, in Wentzville, Missouri.
The cherry-red Cadillac convertible is unlikely to be towed away in the foreseeable future, going forward.
Even, any time soon.

How the hell do you expect me to read and digest your post when you have me singing to myself after the first paragraph/verse or so?
Try whistling, Sherdy, a chara.
Even, erm, dog-whistling, going forward. Well out of ear-sight of an, erm, echo chamber.
liberal and left leaning people as you call them dont seem to realise the feelings ordinary working class people have about mass immigration.seeing their towns and cities overrun then leftie mps and their ilk telling them they are enriching your lives all will be well as they retire to their leafy avenues.people have seen through the lies and have voted for change, time to get on with it.
Don’t the ‘ordinary working class people’ complaining about immigration realise that either they or their parents were also immigrants a few years previously?
The only people in American who have a right to complain about immigrants should be the native Indians!
what happens in america regarding immigration doesnt concern us,it might give may a few ideas however how to deal with the out of control problem here.
I don’t see immigration as a problem and I have loads of immigrants living near me. As for North America the vast majority of Mexicans are mestizos which means that they are in part descended from the natives peoples of North America. So who are the immigrants?

The above is a good article Billy. It might be worth reading and taking a minute to reconsider your thoughts on immigration.
you would know the author hasnt 30 of them living next door to him in a 2bedroom house.
Do you?
Like Perkin, supra, I was considering President elect Trumps wall last evening, we are aware many of our settler neighbours refer to the part of our country, now a Republic as, Mexico, and our fellow Irish women and men as ‘Mexicans’, ; if Donald succeeds in excluding Mexicans from their, formerly northern territory, Texas, will we have the vocal settlers calling for a wall from Derry, through Strabane/Lifford, Ballyconnell, Hacksballscross then north along the Fallon line?
Traders in Newry and Enniskillen and Derry might be a little upset at such great wall but, unlike the US voter’s, here it’s never been about ‘the economy stupid’ rather, the half crown not the crown nor Punt.
The election of Trump is remarkable for many reasons. I can`t think of any President who has come to office with so many enemies before he has even sworn the oath. Half of America detests him, America is awash with both guns and `lone nuts` so if he survives four years fair play to him. Unlike poor JFK, whose perfectly formed hair style proved no match for Lee Harvey Oswald and the other shooters, Donald Trump`s shredded wheat like contraption might just prevent him succumbing to a head shot. Seeing the picture of Trump and that hideous little englander Farage together reminds me of the totally sick joke about the killing of John Lennon, people with no sense of decency asked how Mark Chapman could pump all his bullets into John and ignore Yoko.
Jude,
You have lost the run of yourself.
Would you have been horrified if anyone had tried to assassinate Bill Clinton whose war of convenience against Serbia led to many innocent civilians losing their lives and many others suffering and continuing to suffer from the effects of depleted uranium munitions.
Or would Obama (not forgetting Hillary) be fair game for the proliferation of drone strikes that left many innocents dead as well as the destabilising of Syria and Libya ?
As far as I know Trump hasn’t killed anyone yet and being obnoxious is not yet a capital offence.
So jude would you have the same views on Hilary Clinton? If someone suggested whacking her would you feel any thing? Again in case you havnt noticed there are Muslim people around the world relieved that SHE didn’t get elected purely for the reason that she planned to keep killing them. Is it racist to ignore their views and indeed plight? Trump hasn’t killed anyone(yet) but crooked Hilary has and promised more. Not only that she gloated about it. And yet we are being suggested to that she would’ve been the better candidate? Jesus wept. Maybe thatcher had a point when she told Mandelson that the Irish were not to be trusted.
Hillary was a terrible candidate also, beholden to the Qataris, Saudis and banks.
The fact the American population was left with a choice between Hillary and Trump speaks volumes about their society currently.
Well, Mandelson was right – we’re not. And as Dr Johnson said, we’re a very fair race – we never talk well of one another (I think it was Johnson). Anyway, I know I was a little excessive in suggesting relief if DT was shot – it’s just that I firmly believe an appallingly bad choice has been made. I agree , Hillary is/was a hawk.Blood on her hands, etc. But then so had Barack Obama. And Bush(es). And Bill C. And so it goes. Trump manages to be offensive in an oafish way – at least Boris Johnson has a bit of wit in his insults. Racist, misogynist, sexist, bullying – that’s quite a record to rack up before you even get your hands on power. No, Hillary wasn’t necessarily a very welcome prospect, but compared to how I feel about DT, she was Brigitte Bardot in a loosely draped bedsheet…
He might have forgotten ‘contrafibularities’ though Jude.
Jude, every allegation, accusation and derogatory remark you make about Trump is perfectly true.
But the American people, who presumably know both former candidates better than us, believe that Hillary was the worse choice.
She has been happy to finance the beginnings of Isis, to mass murder Moslems throughout the middle east, to mock and gloat at the death of Saddam Hussein: ‘We came, we saw, he died’, and she laughed.
More recently she was doing her damnedest to enforce a no-fly zone over Syria, which would have led to the downing of Russian or Syrian jet fighters, leading to retaliation, leading to the likelihood of WWIII – and you would have preferred her!
Hillary won the popular vote – so she in fact received more votes than Trump, but didn’t win the electoral college so more people did vote for her than agin Trump. Was Hillary hawkish? Yes, but no one knows what the Donald will do. he has said he will bomb the #@!! out of ISIS so like it or not, WWIII may be coming. Hillary at least knows the stakes and what is this nonsense about financing ISIS? Total fantasy. the legacy of ISIS lies firmly with Bush Administration decisions on invading Iraq and the deception of the uranium yellow cake to gain support from Congress.
Trump is sort of stepping back from some of campaign headliners – that “Wall” according to Newt Gingrich a likely Secretary of State, was a great political device. 20 million people are on Obamacare – 20 million. there has to be a plan in place to address the needs of those people – he’s already talking about only repealing parts of it. I can’t wait to learn if those who took him literally still love him when he doesn’t follow through.
The Donald talked big during his campaign. He has now as his chief counsel someone who is the darling of the alt-right and has already reached out to Marine Le Pen in France. Immigration suppression is incredibly troubling and this is McCarthyite media and alt-right frenzy and hysteria that is in play now regarding immigration. I reckon half if not more of the US population has very small, if any, recent immigrants in their communities. I am sick of the idea of living under a President Trump yet here we are.
Sarah with all due respect it is widely believed Hilary and the Obama administration along with its NATO partners have given off an appearance about tackling ISIS, allthewhile they silently cared little who or what organisation toppled Assad. Al nusra,al Qaeda or Isis are 3 cheeks of the same deformed ass.
To think that these guys dressed in black, riding white Toyota pick up trucks waltz through great swathes of the Middle East, which are heavily militarised and scrutinised by western forces btw, in huge convoys, and nobody sees them never mind stops them? It’s simply preposterous to believe. The bottom line is NATO would prefer to see ISIS in power than Assad.
ISIS is a useful bogeyman and distraction for NATO to hide its real agenda I.e toppling countries that are viewed as enemies of Saudi Arabia. Hilary and NATO are livid that the Russians stepped in to put a halt to their plan. Putin called their bluff, If you want to wipe out ISIS then join forces. Alas that was never their intention hence their vitriol towards Russia. The people of Libya could only have dreamed that Russia had helped them when NATO decided to bring ‘democracy’ to them. You won’t need an election to determine if Libya is now destroyed, that’s for sure.
That’s a new one for me and doest quite get at Russia bombing nonISIS groups in Syria. If they truly are trying to staunch the ISIS threat.I don’t dispute holding the Saudis to account. They and Assad are using chemical weapons on civilians.
NATO expansion has been a provocation to Russia which is paranoid about its borders in the best of times but I disagree with your assertion regarding Isis or the terrorist du jour. The pull out of Iraq left a vacuum. That and the Iraqi government’s terrible treatment of nonShia Muslims. I think Obama believed the Iraqi government would actually form a non-sectarian government.
Sarah, ISIS has nothing to do with Iraq and everything to do with Libya. Remember ISIS was spawned very quickly after NATO bombed the life out of Libya. Ask yourself this, why has ISIS only attacked Muslim countries that happen to have good relations with Iran? Are they not ‘mad’ enough to have a go at say Saudi Arabia,Jordan for example? Or perhaps even Israel? They seem to lose direction and avoid all those so called ‘enemies’. Btw they did take time out to attack a Palestinian refugee camp a couple of years ago which again confirms their agenda.
When the recent joint ceasefire was announced by Russia/NATO over Syria the US refused to tell their ‘Syrian Rebels’ to withdraw from ISIS/Al nusra strongholds. The Russians argued that if they done that then russia and Syrian army could mount an offensive against ISIS and thus crush them. Not only did the US refuse to work with Russia etc they then go and break the ceasefire and bomb Syrian ground troops camped on the outskirts of Alleppo! After their fighter jets had finished their sorties ISIS mounted a ground attack on the remaining Syrian troops I.e went in to finish them off. A standard military manoeuvre. Some would say a joint enterprise.
