In October 2015 Dame Stella Rimingron, former Director of MI5 revealed that Nurse Edith Cavell, shot by a German Firing Squad in October 1914 in Belgium in October 1915 had been passing intelligence to the British and that the Germans were quite in order when they shot her.
Within a few months of the shooting THE TIMES reported that the shooting had been worth a couple of Army Corps to the British. Tens of thousands of chivalrous young men had flocked to the British Colours to avenge the supposed “atrocity” and the Church of England included the legitimately executed spy in its Calendar of Saints. A statue of Edith Cavell stands in London’s Trafalgar Square next the National Portrait Gallery.
It is believed that the Great Fire of London of 1666 started in Pudding Lane, and the Monument standing there, designed by Sir Christopher Wren, was emblazoned with the falsehood that the fire had been started by Catholics. That falsehood remained on it for 150 years, into the 1820s. There can be no doubt that this falsehood inspired some of those who invited William of Orange to usurp the Crowns of England, Scotland and Ireland and many of those who killed and died to save these islands from “Popery.”
These are but two of the many gross deceptions played on credulous people in the establishment and maintenance of the United Kingdom and the British Empire, and in the enslavement, robbery and other abuse of millions of human beings within and outside them.
It is not a function of honest journalism or honest scholarship to ignore monumental liars in Pudding Lane and Trafalgar Square, Westminster or Whitehall, or, worse still, to applaud them and endorse them.
One great Irishman, Michael Davitt, declared that the National Land League had killed “the politics of deference in Ireland.” Another great Irishman, James Connolly claimed that the Irish Transport And General Workers’ Union had taught former slaves to abhor the arts of the Toady, the Lickspittle and thenCrawler.
It sometimes seems to me that the work of Davitt and Connolly needs to be renewed in every generation.
