THE MUST-SEE of MOSTA
Mosta is a high town of twenty thousand souls in the centre of Malta.
Its biggest claim to fame is the Dome of its parish church: it is the third largest in Europe, exceeded only by the Pantheon and St. Peter’s in Rome. It is visible from most parts of Malta.
The church of Santa Maria was built between 1833 and 1860 to a design by Maltese archictect, Girogio Grognet de Vasse.
The Dome’s other claim to fame is often referred to as The Miracle of Mosta.
On 9 June, 1942, while around 300 parishoners waited to hear Mass, three German bombs struck the Mosta Dome. Two bounced off and landed in the square without exploding.
The third bomb pierced the dome, smashed off a wall and rolled across the floor of the church.
Miraculously, no one was hurt and the bomb failed to detonate. A replica of the bomb can be seen in the church sacristy.
Gott alone knows what fate befell the bomb manufactures back in Germany when news of the blankety-blank bombs filtered back to das Vaterland.
