Many things have been said about republicanism and individual republicans by the revisionist ideologues in the media and state organs. One charge which has always been levelled against them is that they mimicked the methods of fascist juntas scattered across the world. There’s no doubt that militant movements around the globe will share some common tactics, such is the nature of warfare. But this is an allegation which has to be tested against the cool light of history, and not based on raw emotion or prejudiced perspectives of the recent conflict.
Republicanism by its nature is a democratic ideology. It asserts the rights of the citizen over the interests of the corporate state, seeking to transfer power from the unelected (banks, big business, the civil service, Monarchs, Popes, etc) to the mass of the population. Republican movements in each country foster similar outlooks on such matters – after all, it was a Republican-minded President who drove the British out of America; A Republican President who ended slavery and Republicans who oversaw France’s transition from Monarchy. All of these involved militant struggle against injustice and evil.
One country I have always felt a spiritual attachment to is Spain. I love the people and the culture; getting off the plane there and being greeted by locals has a sense of connection within me as though there is a familiarity of it all in my heart. Now, up until the 1970s Spain was ruled by a fascist junta, which overthrew the elected Republican government in Spain (which had effectively ended the Monarchy). This coup d’etat was a right wing backlash to avoid mass redistribution of resources and making Spain into a shining beacon of equality for the rest of Europe to emulate. Indeed, British Cabinet Ministers encouraged General Franco to proceed with this, knowing that he would keep the Left at bay; Likewise, Hitler provided him with arms and bombed the republican forces from the skies. The Great Powers wanted this radical threat crushed, knowing what it could inspire. Knowing that the rights enshrined by a republic would forever end their permanent grab on power.
But we must also remember that aid came from many spheres. In Ireland, it is factually correct that the Catholic Hierarchy, who so often denounced the IRA, encouraged men to go off and bear arms against the elected government of Spain, to maintain the “Catholic ethos” of the nation against republican radicalism and democracy. The Bishops did, as song asserts, bless the Blue-Shirts for their efforts at mobilising fascist militias to destroy democratic methods. These people came predominantly from the middle class of Irish society, with a strong connection to what became the Fine Gael party, under General O’Duffy’s direction.
But not all Irish people had an affinity for the Francoist agenda. The poorer classes in society organised, under the command of the IRA and Irish Left, to provide resources and volunteers who would die fighting for the elected government in Spain. Fighting for the inalienable right of the Spanish people, a sovereign European nation, to hire and fire the people who rule over them. They were joined by people like George Orwell. Even future Tory Prime Minister Ted Heath was helping to organise resources and support at Oxford University in the fight against fascist extremism.
Many Irish men perished from the bullets of fascist guns and artillery. There was nothing in it for them but the confidence of knowing they tried to help a neighbouring nation to determine its own destiny in the world; to see ordinary working people get a fair shot at life via socialist economic planning. To rid a country crying out for change from the parasitical forces, under the guise of a Crown dynasty, by overthrowing an old order and forming anew. The battle for Madrid and other strategic areas was as bloody as can be and no thanks awaited those returning from that disaster. But this was undoubtedly one of the finest moments in the history of the Irish race and the revisionists out there should do well to remember it before making their bold, ideological commentary.
In Spain today, you have a minority government made up of the remnants of Franco’s old party; just like Ireland has a minority government of people with a diluted blue-shirt affinity. The real question historians should be pondering is when the unfinished revolution in both countries will finally take over.

Did the IRA not seek help from Nazi Germany Donal, I’m thinking about Sean Russell dying for Ireland on a U boat. In Spain you, if I am not mistaken, had armies facing each other not vicious guerilla action that no one supported.
Who were the most alarmed when PIRA called a ceasefire: ” they’re going for the jugular….”
The Germans, like the British today, were arms manufacturers and salesmen. You produced your Deutsch marks and you purchased your weapons. Like the British, they sold to both sides in many conflicts. America was also contacted for help. So are you saying that this is proof that the IRA were fascists? You also seem a bit sniffy about guerilla warfare. When you were young and playing with your soldiers , is this not the way you behaved?
It’s proof that they’re not as pure as Donal would have us believe in his broad brush strokes of history.
Bí curamach a Dominic, casting aspersions. You could easily find yourself grimacing at what you too might hold dear eg the r.c church and old red socks. The sympathies to nazism from the Vatican were clear for all to see. And sure why wouldn’t they? They like others had a vested interest in hoping the Nazis would put a halt to those pesky communists.
I’ll leave that to the historians. The purity of the Church lies in it’s source.
So if you don’t manufacture arms yourself, where do you get them? Answer you buy them from a country that does. Does that cast aspersions on your cause? Does that make your cause impure? Where did the UVF get their guns? So it proves nothing.
I’m not the one doing the lionising of the IRA being shot by “fascist guns and artillery”
Quote” Irishmen perished from the guns of fascist guns and artillery” I don’t see any mention there of IRA being lionised.
Quote: ” the poorer classes in society, under the command of the IRA……….”
Dominic ,the Spanish civil war was not fought by “the queensbury rules”.It was extremely brutal at times .Also when Russell died,Frank Ryan was at his side.Ryan was the foremost Irish leader in the international brigade who went to spain to fight Franco’s fascists.History is never simple nor warfare “clean”.
That’s why it shouldn’t be glorified and history shouldn’t be seen in broad brush strokes. No one sanctioned Soloheadbeg yet it was the starting pistol for what happened in Derry a couple of weeks ago. Who decides?
I am a ‘collapsed Catholic’ but the nonsense above about the Vat bring pro-Hitler is nonsense. When the Brit and French (& US) Establishments were quite blatantly supporting Fascism, including the German variety the RC church issued the Encyclical Mit brennender Sorge (With burning concern).
It was drawn up as early as 1934 – by Pius XXII-to-be, Eugenio Pacelli, and the Cardinal-Archbishop of Munich Faulhaber. It was not issued in case, it provoked the Nazis into action – probably against Jews. By 1937 it was clear what the Nazis intended. The reading of the encyclical – the first in a vernacular language (i. e. not Latin), for centuries, in every Catholic church in Hitler’s Realm led to the imprisoning of 2,000 odd Catholic ‘religious’, and vandalism against church property.
It has been said that that the language of the encyclical was not strong enough. But Nazi ideology, and the régime itself, were described as “monstrous”.
Seán, please pay attention, the Catholic Church are masters at speaking out of both sides of their mouths. You only have to observe their stance re British rule in Ireland. They inevitably will hedge their bets to ensure their interests are not effected come what may. Be in no doubt they viewed communism as a bigger menace. Their activities(declared support) for other countries since ww2 confirm that. I recall, it’s was Nicaragua or El Salvador I think, were after overthrowing a dictatorship, the socialist government albeit predominantly catholic country, wanted the boul John Paul the 2nd to visit and give the country it’s blessing. He ignored them and visited other countries around them. The overwhelming view was that he was snubbing the country for their socialist views. Btw, that view came from a catholic priest who helped set up the new government.
JP2 had first hand experience of both Nazism and Communism. He knew it through and through.
If you say so Dom. He’d first hand experience of a lot of things and yet responded more favourably to them than pesky socialists.
He also had a very close friend who was a communist; he cured her from cancer.
“He also had a very close friend who was a communist; he cured her from cancer.”
Lol. Sorry you really are a nut job. What I can PROVE is that he had the wisdom to award Jimmy Saville a shiny big medal for his ‘services’. You didn’t need to have special powers to work out that that was all wrong. If he had cured Jimmy then I would’ve been impressed. But hey ho you carry on cherishing the things you hold dear.
As far as I’m aware it’s documented but you hold on to you’re own beliefs if it suits your purpose
There’s an element of free will as well as self justification with personal sins such as rape or murder: “war came to us” “look at Dresdin” “All wars are brutal” There is no desire, among some, for healing and forgiveness.
“As far as I’m aware it’s documented but you hold on to you’re own beliefs if it suits your purpose”
Mmmm…….o……k. Stop digging Dominic.
