Five things worth pondering re that Blonde Interview.
- It was done by an Irish Independent journalist with the obvious intention of presenting Arlene Foster in soft-focus – that is, something to smudge the hard-edged image that came with the Crocodile Thing. The published article had a picture of Arlene and journalist Niamh Horan, sitting together on the grass in the sunshine. This interview was meant to help Arlene.
- Sammy Wilson doesn’t understand why nationalists/republicans are so annoyed. “It was complimentary!” Sammy said on telly yesterday evening, looking a bit puzzled. Why would any woman not be pleased to have herself seen as a blonde with make-up in place? Maybe it goes back to the good old days in the early Assembly, when mooing sounds would be heard from some MLAs when one of the Women’s Coalition stood up to speak. Enough of that kind of thing can affect how you think. Which is maybe why Sammy just doesn’t get it.
- So what do DUP people really think of Michelle O’Neill? It’s hard to say – who knows what thoughts lurk in those dark caverns? In his brief telly interview last night, Sammy ended with an ominous “There are a lot worse things could have been said about Michelle O’Neill!” And during my BBC green room chat with my good friend Nelson McCausland a few weeks back, I got the impression, rightly or wrongly, that he saw her as a front for Gerry Adams at the negotiating table. “She just sits there!” my old chum confided. So should we maybe take that as a “Null Points!” on Michelle from Sammy and Nelson? Right, lads.
- This may not have done Niamh Horan’s journalistic career much good. True, all publicity is good publicity, and people who didn’t know Niamh Horan from a hole in the ground now know her as the person who said “Ah go on – it’s not sexist if it’s true!” EH?? Do my ears deceive me? So if I’m asked my view on Nicola Sturgeon and reply “She wears red lipstick and has really nice eyes!” I’m not being sexist? Sexism is buying into stereotypical thinking, especially about women, and if anything it’s worse when it comes from a woman. Niamh Horan may be something of a household name, however briefly, but the sad truth would appear to be that Niamh doesn’t get it either.
- This latest interview cluster-ruck may not have done Arlene’s leadership prospects much good. As Oscar Wilde meant to say: to put your foot in it in one interview is unfortunate; to put your foot in it in two looks like carelessness. The DUP mass consciousness will now be having night sweats at the thought that things often happen in threes. Expect a case of severe laryngitis to take up residence in the Foster throat and stay there until around 8 June.

INM Group = Belfast Telegraph = Irish Independent = Denis Redacted = Major “Friend” of Fine Gael !
Should we be surprised ???
Arah, don’t mind Niamh, sure she’s a blonde…
Sure I wanted to pur on fb isn’t all the SINN FEIN ladies beautiful, thought better of it sounded a bit one sided and didn’t want to be disrespectful to women from any party. Just not right, sure am blonde myself as you all know I need my roots done.
You’d know there was little in the news to report when there’s a media feeding frenzy about a journalist and a clumsy politician having a mutual “blonde moment”; the kind of squib that might be filler in one of those supermarket magazines with photos of Kim’s “real” colossal arse . Of course , in the ante-diluvian Norneverland ….(or at least in some dark sectors of it) the very idea of sexism, its existence ,or a description thereof, itself may never have gained any traction at all, now well into the 21st century, or even the whiff or idea of feminism may never have been discussed before, so our Wee Sammy , his cohorts in the backwoods …and so forth ,might not have …..and might never see ,the wider references. They might still think feminism was some drippy bra-burning ,early 1970s brown -rice eating fad that had long since passed, like the frisbee or the earlier hula -hoop. For one thing these are not the most media-savvy or well-informed creatures, to begin with. Of course there is a wider discusssion to be had about society’s blonde ambition and the ongoing social, cosmetic and pharmaceutical cloning of womankind ,but that point was missed entirely.Judging a book by its cover was never a good idea of course, but society has a tendency to live by its stereotypes, which is why we end up with all these assorted tribes in any case .
It’s a good job that child-murderer and all round weirdo ,Ian Brady ‘s death has just popped up this very minute ,one day after the blonde debacle ,to fill the gap in the schedules….In the meantime Arlene might very well be kept in a cool, shadowed room while being fitted for a wife-scold…(I know …don’t ask ….look it up.)
Niamh Horan sexist…..never!!
http://www.independent.ie/irish-news/niamh-horan-on-women-in-rugby-i-never-play-a-game-without-my-tan-30495836.html
Jude
” if you think to comment on Arlene’s looks is sexist, run the Nixon-Kennedy debate and then kick yourself for ten minutes”
Jude
“And the new leader has that kind of wholesome, attractive appearance which comes so naturally to Tyrone people (Shut up, Virginia),. Nor is it sexist to mention that, as John F Kennedy was fortunate to be viewed beside the brooding face of his political opponent Dick Nixon, Michelle will have a similar advantage, assuming the DUP don’t decide enough is enough and remove Arlene as their leader.”
Jude
“On the other hand, the first thing that strikes me and I suspect a lot of others is, how blonde and pleasing to the eye Michelle O’Neill is.”
paddykool
“It is an unfortunate quirk of genetics and DNA that the Democratic Unionist Party leader could never be considered a remotely conventionally attractive female beauty ”
paddykool
“the new Sinn Fein leader Michelle O’Neill could be a bit more subtle with the make-up box,”
And so on
Well…gio, I would call those comments simple observations of artistic and physical merits..There is something of a fuzzy myth that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but there are still laws of physicality , balance and proportion to be considered when the world is viewed. These are standards that society generally agrees to be the arbiters of selection and it is the standard we aspire to.These have little to do with intelligence ,intellectual merit or a specific skillset , but they are still choices each of us make in our everyday lives.Indeed it is part of the set of mental tools we use when choosing a mate. Most animals do this.
And some might call it hypocrisy PK, flowery rhetoric is no substitute for consistency I’m afraid.
I can’t imagine Michelle being lured into an “interview” with Mx Horan but I could never imagine her playing word games with same towering literary giant.
Okay Scott, you’re on a blind date, the door opens and in walks Theresa May and the 22 year -old Brigitte Bardot….flowery rhetoric be-damned…who catches your eye first?
If you’re blind it could be either. Or maybe you could be so busy trawling through back posts looking for inconsistencies that you wouldn’t notice who was at the door.
Did it take you long doing that, gio?
Jude
Not at all. I have a good memory, like my namesake.
I could have gone on but I got bored after a few minutes.
Ha ha…Me too, me too…
Jude
Ah now they weren’t that bad.
If you can trawl through the Independent looking for something mildly offensive then surely you can plough through a few short quotes from paddy!
Gio, you truly are an enigma. What a guy with your intelligence and taste is doing hanging around a crummy site full of boredom and contradictions, I’m at a loss to know. Btw – tine Indo doesn’t need trawling. Pick a day. Any day.
Jude
You are too kind to me and too hard on yourself!
Looks like someone has got it real bad for you Jude? Pathetically sad mind you. #sympathyface.
wolfie
Just giving a view on the topic.
You should really try it!
Gio
On the basis of the above “evidence ” it looks as if you’ve got Jude and his faithful companion Harry “bang to rights”‘!! Isn’t it ironic how previous comments can come back to bite one?!! It’s not so long since R H I was the scandal of the day,but “Blondgate” has obviously taken over.I’m sure the young unemployed who are waiting on some job creation from a future Executive will be greatly impressed by this furore over hair colour.
“…….young unemployed who are waiting on some job creation from a future Executive will be greatly ……”
===============================
What about the unemployed who will witness the calamity of Brexit? Sponsored by the DUp whose members claim they don’t care how many jobs are lost once they get a Brexit.
Also in 1922 at partition 80% of the industry of Ireland 32 counties was in the Greater Belfast area.alone
If the entire 6 Counties contained 10% of Irish industry today. I would be surprised.
It’s most likely less than 10%
So, quite obviously Unionism has destroyed the job chances and has been an economic disaster.for it’s own 6 counties at least and perhaps Ireland 32
If you were really concerned. You’d bin unionism and partition.
But hey ho. I guess you ain’t.
Argenta
You might think so but no one is ever really bang to rights on here or blogs in general I suppose.
If someone is in any difficulty they simply disappear for a bit or the subject is dropped.
That’s what I would do anyway.!
I can see no inconsistency in my comments Argenta. There is a lot of hypocrisy among men and women about the subject of sexism. It is sexist to believe that a woman is inferior to a man or a man is inferior to a woman. It does not stop the sexes joking across the divide about “man-flu” and so on. It is not sexist to point out the attractiveness or otherwise of a particular person…male or female .It’s a fact of life that impinges on how we are are all viewed and judged. The “blonde” thing is a slightly different thing …a relatively 20th century plus phenomenom most likely starting with Jean Harlow’s then radically shocking dye-job in the 1930s and reaching its glorious ultimate blonde moment in the person of Marilyn Monroe in the 1950s, who brought the “little girl lost” blonde -girl ditzy characterisation to the Big Screen and possibly inspired an entire cosmetic industry to invest in full-strength bleach and highly -coloured lipsticks. Women got around to copying the look in their droves, transforming mousy-haired ladies into “blonde-bombshells” overnight and also embracing the faux -silliness of the character.Everyone knows that that schtick is a pretence but it is the “blonde equals silly” that has passed into the 21st century culture and which has produced the “blonde moment”.
I personally believe that in this case the entire thing has been blown out of all proportion, but that is not to say that an able politician should have seen this train-wreck coming from miles off and could have chosen to avoid it .Either that or the situation was used to make a point and to poke a little girl-on-girl humour. Was it political , funny or just bitchy? Women might be able to have those conversations between each other but should men ever dare?
Gio, I don’t think that Arlene was referring to the colour of MÓNeill’s hair, I thought she was making a derogatory remark meaning a bit stupid or dim, which is how this type of remark is usually made.
Páid
I think you are probably right, based on her general lack of respect in the past.
I don’t see any deliberate plan between the DUP and the Indo to have a go at Michelle.
It just looks like a gaffe to me and too good for the Editor to leave out.
talking of sexist interviews:
https://audioboom.com/posts/1460770-jude-collins-says-charles-saatchi-could-well-have-been-goaded-into-gripping-nigella-lawson-s-throat
And your point is, Brendan?….
That there is a lot of sexism about – and toe curling interviews.
Tell me, in light of Trump, can a man be goaded into grabbing a woman elsewhere in your view, or just round the throat?
any diversion must be welcome.keeps the subject of why the wages running in to millions now are still being paid.
Without being insulting, what word association would you make with Arlene? Arrogant?
Beautiful
Niamh Horan made a fool of herself yesterday on RTE. She said she cant see what the whole fuss was about – as she is blonde herself.
She blatantly was trying to tarnish SF, while protecting that beauty – Arlene.
Horan herself is a complete feminist. She is regularly on that ‘Cutting Edge’ show, spouting about feminist related issues.
The question of whether Arlene was being sexist is rather muted by the fact that Arlene herself admits she’s being sexist in the interview ! The transcript is there for all to read, she originally stops herself by saying she can’t say what she wants because it’s sexist then after some encouragement goes ahead and says it.
Niamh’s comment that something isn’t sexist if it’s true is going to be hard to beat in terms of the more stupid comments of 2017.
Gio has a point here ( lord that was tough to type )……
Barry
Thanks. I think!
And your point is, Brendan?….
The devil has clearly taken possession of your soul, Barry…
The Devil has a restraining order out against me Jude…..does no harm to throw the odd curve ball although I did feel dirty after…
Barry
I do have feelings you know!
Niamh Horan is as much a journalist as I am a Nobel Prize winner…she is a truly, awful hack that only the risibly low standards at the Sindo would permit to continue in their employ.
Terrific timing as always from Awkward Arlene;her latest gaffe should galvanise the Nationalist vote as before with her bizarre analogy with crocodiles.Looking forward eagerly to Michelle becoming FM.Roll on June 8th…
God help me for being the one to offer any defence of Niamh, but look at the facts:
She soft-soaped Arlene by talking about her favourite topic: I’m a victim, look at how I suffered.
And then, lulled into a false sense of security, she slips in the killer question, even having to coax Arlene into the trap she had set.
Then Arlene, a trained solicitor, DUP party leader (at the moment), and former first minister of NI, who should be no mug, falls, hook, line and sinker!
What a gaffe, what a laugh, now who’s daft?
No, I don’t think much of the scribe, but she did succeed in getting the day’s headlines – which is the aim of any journalist.
Sherdy
I would agree with that assessment.
An interviewee can often let their guard down when they think the proper interview is over and that is when a canny journalist can get a tasty faux pas.
I don’t agree with some here that it was a friendly interview necessarily, more likely one of a series I would have thought.
And even if Horan innocently thought the remarks were harmless her editor must surely have seen they were not.
None of which excuses Arlene from coming out with it but it does look like more evidence that she is not quite up to leadership.
This was not a remark made under the glare of a 90 minute debate, or during an unplanned encounter with a journalist while canvassing.
No, this remark was published in a friendly paper, with a lightweight journalist and with the intent of helping Foster with her PR image. The comment Foster made was not an accident, the DUP wanted to say it, they wanted it published. The DUP are not concerned about any blowback, they WANT to portray O’Neill as a blonde, empty headed puppet of Gerry Adams. This is their electoral strategy.
Either they don’t see or don’t care how this motivates Nationalist voter turnout OR they need the continued threat of the IRA to rally their base to vote. If McGuinness & Adams have left the scene and O’Neill is not perceived as satan incarnate their vote may slip.
