The DUP: they just don’t get it

When I was a teacher, I used to think that students deserved a mark for effort as well as achievement. There were youngsters who toiled long and hard to come up with something fairly pedestrian, and it seemed callous and counter-productive to dismiss their efforts.

Watching the DUP over the last few months has been a bit like that. They’ve tried really really hard to come back from the pummeling they received at the Assembly elections, and their efforts to get Stormont up and running again deserve some sort of credit.

Now you might want to dispute this image of the DUP. You might feel that the party hasn’t just simply striven hard, they’ve achieved much. After all, look at the ten – yes, ten – MPs they’ve elected to Westminster. Look at the way they’ve squeezed a billion, or is it a billion and a half, out of the unhappy Theresa May. This isn’t just a party that tries hard – its efforts bring success.

There’s certainly no denying the numbers. Nor that they succeeded in threatening the Tories if they didn’t hand over their valuables, or at least one billion of their valuables. The DUP is indeed, when you look at it, a kingmaker.

But unfortunately, the DUP is so committed to effort, it forgets what success and near-failure look like.

They have indeed got the Tories over a barrel, but they seem to forget that this position is desperately fragile, and contrary not just to the wishes of Labour supporters, but of many Conservates too. The DUP have put their collective weight on a near-broken reed, and when the Theresa collapses, as she will inevitably do, the DUP will crash along with them.

The DUP also seem unaware that their efforts at Westminster have exposed them to the pitiless gaze of the UK electorate. And right or wrong, the UK electorate think they’ve never seen such a bunch of Paddy reactionaries ever. By forging their much-vaunted deal with the Tories, the DUP tend to forget that it has whipped back their veil and the people of the UK are distinctly underwhelmed by what they see.

Finally and most importantly, the DUP have misread the mood of the republican/nationalist electorate. They forget that for fifteen years or so, Sinn Féin have been transporting every power and role they could lay their hands on to Stormont. Westminster, for republicans, is literally a waste of space. The action will be in Ireland, not England.

What’s more, Stormont may some day return, but not as the DUP have known it. The boast that they have no red lines, unlike the Shinners, is a sad and empty one. Listen carefully, guys: Stormont as you know it and long for it is dead. Finished. There ain’t going to be any more curry my yoghurts or can of coke or leprechaun jibes. Even with its huge mandate, Sinn Féin aren’t going to hop back into harness with you because you’ve proved yourselves, over a period of years, as irreformable. The Shinners, usually in the person of the late Martin McGuinness, have tried and tried again, reached out, gone the extra mile. For what? To be called a bunch of crocodiles?

To deal with reality you have to first acknowledge its existence. For the DUP, the rising tide of nationalism is a mirage, a bad dream, just bogey-man stuff it’s handy to frighten the punters with when you need their votes. Not so, dear DUP. There is a tide in men’s affairs which, if you close your eyes as it comes crashing in, will drown you.

If they have no red lines why have they vetoed, ILA, SSM and BoR. is AF a bit like the Queen of Tarts (it was tarts and not hearts wasn’t it) it is what she says it is. As you have stated, MMG did go the extra mile in trying to house train (apologies that’s a unionist term) unionists and let them see that the new dispensation was not Unionist hegemony 2.0. 11 years of running the Assembly while parallel talks on the above, agreed at St Andrew’s with the DUP petitioning their concern that modernity should be allowed in. Yet, this is what the DUP are once again offering. One recalls the great Dubya, “Fool me once, fool me twice etc”. Is that the bona fides they are offering to partners in running the big council.
I don’t know about SF but I don’t trust them. If SF accept the parallel talks gambit again, then as some DUP Man said they will take this as a sign of business as usual and start trying to run rings around the others again and we all know what happened then. Red Sky, NAMA, RHI if I’ve left any out put it down to my age.

I think the best thing to do is sit and wait and ‘keep your powder dry’ as a unionist politician used to say. The DUP have no red lines – just ‘no’ lines. If our parents in England decide that direct rule and not proxy rule is the medicine then so be it. Hold your nose and swallow it. If they stop or curtail the pay, the DUP will suffer as much as anybody. All the suspended and unfinished promises from GFA and Cill Rímhín may be carried out by the mother of parliaments and save the unionist blushes. And have we that much to lose. No government to oversee the harshest that will mark the birth? Of this pathetic statelet. Let’s wait and see.

    Harshest = hatefest

Stormont as we know is finished and unionism as we know it, is finished. Now it’s a question of time. How long will it take for the penny to drop ?

If the clowns in Westminster do enact all that’s been previously agreed ( presuming some sort of direct or joint authority is established ) ,thereby letting the DUP of the proverbial hook….it doesn’t change anything , Unionism can’t be trusted….they will only begin to realize their folly and their true isolation when the numbers dictate…..not before ! Presently they believe they are in the driving seat , kingmakers….they believe that we’re a sub species akin to apes , not meriting any respect or reverence ….but I can live with that in the surety that the sh*t is about to hit the fan….big time…and what a delightful mess it will be !

Unionism is an ugly thing in all it’s manifestations – and I don’t respect any of what it describes as “culture”. And make no bones about it; I want to see this state dismantled. When I think of how nationalists have suffered – and what they have endured – then I feel a responsibility to honour that suffering by agitating for justice, and and end to Unionists and English rule in our country.

There will be no going back: we owe at least that much to those who have paid the ultimate price.

DUP have brought us £1.5 Billion Pounds
Sinn Fein have brought us £0

Who is it that benefits the community
A party that delivers or a party that protests?

A bird in the hand ……………..?

There’s a lot more to life than dirty money. Unionism has no noble cause, no respected ideology. Life is short and money is only something you need in case you don’t die tomorrow. Keep it, I say.

  9. Mick July 10, 2017 at 4:54 pm #

£1.5 billion? How much of that is to top-up the block grant, the block grant which was cut by billions.

The thing is whilst Sinn Fein was demanding that block grant was left as it was to protect everything from agriculture to roads and infrastructure the DUP was arguing the other direction.

So while the DUP did aquire £1-1.5 billion for the North how much of that is literally a top-up of that bung for that block grant that the DUP so vigorously argued to cut.

Gaz , when will we see any of this blood money…..The UDA, UVF , Orange Order etc etc will need their pay offs …..the RHI needs paid off ……don’t be so naive ….they’ve been taken for the stupid fools they are…..Ireland will be re-united very shortly and all your pontificating and wishful thinking will amount to nothing , rud ar bith , zero , ziltch ……….give yourself a chance and join Sinn Féin !

Ahh ffs Gaz, the DUP’s Peter Weir, in the form of education minister had £50m extra to help with school projects. Rather than helping all schools, he released £3m to a few projects. This is not really acceptable, as he could have given all of the money to different educational authorities around the north to help with threadbare purses, but no! Rather than doing all in his power to help everyone out, his returned £47m back to the British Treasury. This is how the DUP helps their young ppl who trail behind everybody else in educational qualifications. Then they boast about getting all this cash from Theresa May and have the audacity to claim that this extra money includes , guess what Gaz? Yip, you got it. £50m to help our dwindling educational structures. My 8yr old autistic grandson could’ve done more with a pencil and a sheet of A4 than the excuse for a political party called the DUP.
