I see letters in THE IRISH TIMES calling for a re-imagining Ireland’s flag. Sir Anthony O’Reilly, formerly known as the British Lion Tony O’Reilly, tried to run that idea up the flagpole in New York many years ago, but Brian Lenihan Sr. shot it down with style. The Irish Rugby Football Union, long the sporting supporters of the old Apartheid Regime in South Africa, dishonours Ireland in “international” competitions when refusing to have The National Flag flown and the National Anthem played.
Sir Anthony is a former owner of Independent Newspapers whose re-imagining of Ireland’s history vies for dishonour with the ghastly “Ireland’s Call”. The INDO AND SINDO have changed owners but not function. It would be bad enough if that huge media group was alone in its field, but it has competition in infamy with other “Irish” media and University Faculties whose mottoes should read “PER ANUM EX CATHEDRA”

Ah, Tony the man whom, obviously, has been eating too many of his beans, now filled with even more ‘hot air’.
I recall a story decades ago of when he was playing rugby for Ireland in the old Lansdown Rd. stadium, one of the opposition team, it was said, kicked O Reilly, and an Irish supporter shouted from the stand, ‘good on you, and kick his butler while he’s there’, it seems Tony has lost his touch with real Ireland, although he never had it.
Let’s see, a flag for Ireland. How about a bit of green for the Catholics, some orange for the Protestants and white in the middle to symbolise peace? Oh wait…..
