SMELLING OF ROSES? by Donal Kennedy

The first time I visited Rome it was a very hot day and I bought myself a cheap t-shirt depicting the Sistine Chapel. Five minutes later as I was walking through a piazza a stranger called to me, pointing and holding his nose. I didn’t know his language and could not recall witnessing nor receiving such a salute. But I quickly learned that a pigeon had honoured me by dropping its tribute on the t-shirt. But I was only a few metres from a fountain, where, thanks to a long dead Pope, one can drink cool, clear water, for nothing or rinse clean the tributes or sins of the pigeons. Italy, like most countries, is composed mainly of good people. But, far too often these good people have been ruled by fools, crooks or tyrants or persons or coalitions embodying all three failings.

I have often in my Blogs written of stinkers in politics and the media. Where those stinkers are Irish I was NOT  being anti-Irish. Where those Stinkers are English I have NOT been anti-English. I have lived, loved, worked and played in England for the past 54 years amongst the finest of people in the world, English an others.

In recent days I have, in passing shown that I believe the Spanish Inquisition was NOT A GOOD THING. A correspondent in THE TIMES, not long ago conceded that Bloody Sunday was not perfect because it was a PROPAGANDA OWN GOAL for the Brits. Anyhow I described the packed Trafalgar Square Rally of 14 July 1918 which passed with acclamation a resolution that British citizens of German descent be stripped of their citizenship and interned without trial. And I condemned THE TIMES for its support of that rally. I compared it to Hitler’s Nuremberg Rallies where nobody dared shout “SCHEISSE” or even mildly disagree, I referred then to the Nuremberg Laws of 1935 which (in the spirit of the Trafalgar Square resolution of 1918) deprived large numbers of German citizens of their citizenship, property and other rights because of their Jewish identities or heritage

Recently in Jerusalem, the Knesset passed by about 60 votes to 50 laws denying Israeli Arab citizens rights they had previously held. I suggest you might check the news reports of this and decide In this case, which side are Stinkers and which side smell of roses.

I don’t intend to return to this topic.
