“Be grateful for small mercies” is a commendably Christian view on experience, and it looks as though the relatives of those killed by the infamous Glenanne gang will have to be grateful for the news that there’ll be an independent investigation into state collusion with the gang in the killing of their loved ones. And that the PSNI’s Chief Constable, George Hamilton, acted unlawfully by not setting in motion such an investigation.
This news clearly is a mercy because the relatives of those killed must be weak with relief that the truly hellish nature of their loss will be probed. But it’s a small mercy because their relatives were killed in the early 1970s, and it’s taken until now to begin a search for the truth.
I’m not good at being grateful for small mercies, which is why I say, not WTF? but What.The. Fuck? The state has sat down with loyalist paramilitaries and worked out how best to slaughter innocent, uninvolved people, and it’s taken forty years for permission to be given for an independent investigation to start?
More and more I find myself agreeing with Charlie Haughey’s statement decades ago: this is a failed state. It was then, it is now and it’ll never be otherwise. Amen.
