“BOOK OF THE WEEK” SATURDAY 5 JUNE 2021 – SATURDAY REVIEW SECTION OF “THE TIMES” OF LONDON – by Donal Kennedy

The book chosen by the paper that paid the pornographer, forger and perjurer Richard Pigott is entitled “The Irish Assassins Conspiracy,Revenge and the murders which stunned an Empire” by Julie Kavanagh is reviewed favourably by one Gerard De Groot.

De Groot declares that the fight for Irish Independence turned vicious after the 1882 Phoenix Park murders.

You would imagine THE TIMES would treat the Phoenix Park killings like a hot potato, for Pigott’s forgery supported the attempt by the paper to convict Parnell for encouraging such activities. When Pigott, the paper’s star witness, was exposed, he had the saving grace of shame, and shot himself. The Great British public lost faith in the paper which nearly went broke. But it has remained shameless in the 139 years which have elapsed since.

Julie Kavanagh’s father was obsessed with the Phoenix Park killings and died in 1966 aged 52 when she was a child. She followed him into journalism and inherited the obsession. And she is credited with declaring that after 1882 assassination became a favourite tool of Irish politics.

Asinine assertions are the bread and butter of British and servile pro-British journalism.

Assassination is as British as beef, Yorkshire pudding, bakewell tart and Cheshire cheese.

When a Cork Inquest in 1920 accused the British Cabinet and its agents with the murder of Lord Mayor MacCurtain, the British suppressed inquests.

During 1920 and 1921 Crown Forces in Ireland assassinated numerous citizens in their own houses at night, including  a Lord Mayor of Limerick and his  immediate predecessor.

A week or two ago the Inquest on unarmed men and women murdered by the Parachute Regiment in August 1971 finally heard the truth.

Solicitors Pat Finucane and Rosemary Nelson were amongst many citizens assassinated with the connivance of the Crown forces. in accordance with doctrines expounded by General Kitson, drawing on his experiences in various dirty wars since the 1940s.
