Constant readers of this blogsite will know that my blog yesterday reported on an Irish Times article by Prof John Doyle, pointing out in detail the irrelevance of the British annual subvention to NEI. I ended the blog by noting that I had written to The Irish Times commending them for the article and its importance, while at the same time realising that your average leper would be as welcome to the IT as a letter from me.
Sir,
How truly refreshing to read John Doyle’s article on the British subvention (‘UK subvention to North irrelevant to debate on Irish unity’, 9 June 2021). There will no doubt be those who will dispute his figures, which indicate that the British subvention is far from the £10 billion lazily trotted out by unionists north and south. If those who disagree can debate the annual figure in the detached and informed way Prof Doyle has shown is possible, they too will have done the states north and south some service.
Yours etc
Jude Collins
And here is the final paragraph of my blog yesterday. Prescient or what?
I’ve written a letter to The Irish Times congratulating them for publishing this major contribution to the debate on Irish unity. If they act according to their usual form, my letter is already in the IT waste-basket.
