When THE IRISH TIMES publishes editorials portentously and pretentiously introduced as “The Irish Times view on” it toes a line helpful to British interests.
It is governed by the secretive oathbound IRISH TIMES TRUST established by Harold Wilson’s crooked “fixer” Arnold Goodman. Goodman, a member of the British House of Lords, managed the financial affairs of another Peer, Lord Portman, who claimed he’d been diddled out of about ten million pounds by him.
Goodman was known to issue writs at the drop of a hat and was the bane of “PRIVATE EYE” and other publications. As he has long departed (to a lower Chamber?) I expect any writs emanating thence to be smoking.
Goodman, in establishing the IRISH TIMES TRUST was in Gilchrist’s words ” providing guidance to” (West British) ” members on the Board” of the paper.
Gilchrist was the British Ambassador to Ireland in 1969 and a letter he sent to the Foreign Office (the original of which he destroyed) turned up in the British Public Record Office 30 years later, unnoticed (or merely unreported) by paid historians and journalists at the time. An enthusiastic amateur, Jack Lane, discovered it in December 2002. THE IRISH TIMES still refuses to come clean about it.
The story of the paper from its origin in 1859 is told in “The Irish Times: Past and Present” by John Martin, published by the Belfast Historical And Educational Society in 2008.
Anyhow Gilchrist had form. He was British Ambassador to Indonesia in 1965 and masterminded a coup there with a lying propaganda campaign whose origin remained hidden. What follows here is mostly based on “The New Rulers Of The World” a bestseller by the Australian Journalist John Pilger, published in 2002.
Pilger quotes chapter and verse to support his assertions, unlike Gilchrist, Eoghan Harris, or, for that matter, the transcribers who give us “the Irish Times view.”
In 1967 Richard Nixon, who, the following year won the American Presidency, observed –
“With its 100 million people and its 300 mile arc of Islands containing the region’s richest hoard of natural resources, Indonesia is the greatest prize is South-East Asia.”
The hoard had already been grabbed by the “Free World” through slaughter sponsored by Governments led by US ” Democrat” Lyndon Johnson and British“Socialist” Harold Wilson, and parcelled out to, amongst others-

General Motors
Imperial Chemical Industries
British Leyland
British American Tobacco
American Express
Siemens
Goodyear
The International Paper Corporation
US Steel
amongst others, following an extraordinary conference in Geneva sponsored by the Time-Life Corporation.
Before the killings, whilst Ambassador in Indonesia’s capital, Jakarta, Sir Andrew Gilchrist cabled his Foreign Office in London –
“I have never concealed from you my belief that a little shooting in Indonesia would be an essential preliminary to effective change.”
His Embassy advised British Intelligence in Singapore –
“Suitable propaganda might be (that) PKI (Communist Party of Indonesia) brutality in murdering Generals and the Foreign Minister’s daughter, PKI subverting Indonesia as agents of foreign Communists……..But treatment will need to be subtle –
e.g. (a) all activities should be strictly unattributable.
(b) British participation or co-operation should be carefully concealed.”
The British Foreign Office established a secret “Information Research Department” in Singapore which fed lies, to media, including to the BBC which (innocently?) relayed them to their millions of listeners and viewers.
In fact the PKI had no quarrel with President Sukarno, a popular leader of a sovereign state, following an independent line in foreign policy neutral and unaligned with either Western or Soviet Blocs.
The killings were hailed in TIME Magazine as “The West’s Best News in Asia” and on a visit to the USA, Australian Prime Minister, Harold Holt, exulted that “with 500,000 to a million communist sympathisers knocked off, I think it safe to assume a re-orientation has taken place.”
The re-orientation endures and the Western Corporations continue to knock off the assets which should belong to the people of Indonesia who now exist under their thumbs.
In February 1966 Gilchrist, still in Jakarta, wrote to his Foreign Office a report based on the findings of the Swedish Ambassador –
“The Ambassador and I had discussed the killings before he left” (on his tour of central and eastern Java), “and he had found my suggested figure of 400,000 people quite incredible.
His enquiries have led him to believe it a serious underestimate. A bank manager in Surabaya with twenty employees said that four had been removed at night and beheaded. A third of a spinning factory’s technicians, being members of a Communist union, had been killed.In certain areas it was felt not enough people had been killed.”
The British Navy escorted a ship full of the killers acting for the mutinous General Suharto down the Malacca Straits. The American Embassy was supplying lists of people to be murdered. The American Ambassador in Jakarta was Marshall Green, known in the State Department as the Coup Master. Suharto was installed as a puppet Dictator of Indonesia and remained in that position for about thirty years and stealing billions of dollars. The World Bank, the International Monetary Fund and Western Conglomerates continue to rob the country regarded as a model pupil of Western of Western overlords.
The Americans worked closely with the British, whose consular official professed to be ignorant of what was happening although bodies were being washed up on the lawns of their consulates.
It is now thought that up to 3,000,000 people were murdered in the coup. Mainly civilians.
I should think that British Government Ministers knew what was happening. The British had long been involved in dirty tricks which they taught to the neophytes of the CIA. The coup that overthrew Mossadeq in Teheran was planned by the British under the Socialist Attlee but carried out by the Americans in the last days of Truman’s term in office. Nothing good for the Iranians came out of that coup..

But take the “IRISH TIMES view” to be no more reliable than that of its London sposors.
