If you Google search ‘DUP’ nowadays every result will have the words ‘resign’ or ‘resignation’ in them, indeed even in the past couple of days there has been another resignation from the DUP and no, I don’t mean Edwin Poots. As soon as Edwin Poots announced his resignation as party leader, Darryn Causby a Councillor from Portadown resigned stating, “the party is disintegrating and irreparably damaged.” These are hardcore Unionists who believe in the DUP. Its hardline stance on Republicanism and parity of…anything, is the very reason they joined the DUP and began working for them. You don’t just join a party like the DUP if you don’t believe to the very letter what their mission is – it’s an institution, started by Ian Paisley, the original, and someone messed with that institution and because there was British involvement in it, it was all the more painful.
That betrayal could never be allowed to stand. The betrayal by one of the hard hitters of the DUP, someone they thought the party’s hardline stance and unique brand of Unionism was safe with, handed their perceived enemy exactly what they wanted, the right to the native language of their own country…and the British Government assisted. Some may say it was all down to Edwin nominating Paul Givan for First Minister against the wishes of the party, and while that may be true, it wouldn’t have upset the cart all that much and the party would have towed the line and would have worked with it… but then they found out Edwin gave away the one thing which gave them power over those pesky fenians, their own language and the right to have it protected in the same way the English language is. Simply symbolic by all intents and purposes but that symbolism kept Nationalists, Republicans and Irish speakers at the behest of Unionism, they held our very culture from us as a right while theirs was fully funded, extremely overt and downright sectarian at times.
Unionism can claim their aversion to the Irish language is because there are more important initiatives to fund or hilariously because it erodes their precious culture, which if true shines a light on how fragile their culture really is, but in the end they can no longer deny the Irish their language or rights attached to it. Perhaps, in the future the DUP may be grateful the British Government stepped in to take this political thorn out of their side but I’d bet my bottom dollar even the British Government didn’t bet on their intervention setting off a series of events which would within 24 hours lead to the resignation of the new leader of the DUP and the new First Minister being ordered to stand down by the DUP officer board. Something which in itself is a message to the British Government and Brandon Lewis that their actions have consequences…after all, the DUP did warn the British Government to back off and not to go over the heads of the Executive. Not surprisingly, Unionism was the only political entity to be outraged by a cultural package being delivered. All other parties, Republican, Nationalist and Other were happy to have it delivered either by Stormont or by Westminster, indeed they signed a letter to that effect.
The danger now is violence on the streets because once again that threat is being leveled at society because a section of society other than Unionists received rights. As expected, the LCC emerged from the shadows with threats against Irish Government Ministers and officials saying they were not welcome in the 6 Counties. This is a band of drug dealers, criminals and terrorists who Unionist politicians and the British Government engaged with at their behest. This is the very reason Unionist politicians have been asked to cease their meetings with the LCC. The LCC and Loyalist paramilitaries cannot continue to be part of peace if they are still willing to do violence if they don’t get their way. Even Doug Beattie called on the LCC to disband which was met with “astonishment” by the Chair of the LCC, David Campbell. If the Loyalist community is genuine about peace…why do they need armed terrorists who crawl out of the shadows with threats of violence when Unionist politicians don’t get their way.
They are terrorists…look up the definition. The Loyalist people are not.
