The Sunday Times Magazine (12 June) carries an interview with the Nobel Peace Prize Winner Henry Kissinger by the historian Niall Ferguson, the author of a volume covering Kissinger’s life from 1923 to 1968 and currently writing a second volume to be completed next year.Ferguson is a comparative spring chicken, born in 1968. Kissinger has just published “Leadership” featuring Konrad Adenauer, Charles de Gaulle, Egypt’s Anwar Sadat, Singapore’s Lee Kuan Yew, Margaret Thatcher and Richard Nixon, all of whom he had known and admired. He voiced no regrets for his own contributions to history some of which, such as supporting Nixon’s abandonment of the recognition of China, were those of a constructive statesman. Kissinger had, in vain. urged Obama to quit Afghanistan. Kissinger still has his wits about him and is not as gung-ho as Biden and his Russophobic cronies are about the Ukrainian conflict. Love him or hate him he is nobody’s fool. He is very clear about Thatcher’s legacy, one after his own heart.
Seven years after Thatcher left office Kissinger wrote to her congratulating her on New Labour’s Election Victory, “for laying the groundwork for this major turn away from the left”………”I cannot imagine anything that would confirm your revolution than Blair’s program, it seems to me well to the right of the Conservative government that preceded yours.”
It would be no injustice to describe the New Labour Project as a Thatcher Tribute Act. |
