The protocol: six things to think about

  1. British Foreign Secretary Lynn Truss says she’s changing the protocol in the interests of everyone in NEI. All the political parties and business organisations say that what she’s proposing will be contrary to the wishes of everyone in NEI bar the DUP. Tail wags dog?
  2. When Dorothy Parker was told that President Calvin Coolidge was dead, she replied “How can they tell?”. Britain’s revised protocol will have a green channel for goods from GB destined to stay in NEI. Without at least some checking, how can they tell?
  3. The European Court of Justice will be allowed to respond to issues of EU law, but it won’t have the final say in disputes over the protocol
  4. Later today, Scotland will announce its plans for an independence referendum, since it believes that independence from Britain would be best for Scottish people. Raise your hand if you think that Britain’s hammering of the protocol suggests that Britain has at heart the interests of people in NEI?
  5. “[The protocol is] A good arrangement…with the minimum possible bureaucratic consequences” – Boris Johnson 19 October 2019.
  6. Which one of these people has done most for Irish independence: Patrick Pearse, Michael Collins, Bobby Sands or Boris Johnson?
