The Newry Reporter newspaper is shutting down. It’s not the first local paper to go to the wall and it won’t be the last. It’s natural to regret their passing, but should we not be more positive and rejoice in all the new media that we’ve now been gifted with?

Speaking of which, the figures suggest that wealth in Ireland is very unevenly spread. In the past 10 years, the wealthiest 1% of the population have accumulated 70 times as much wealth as the bottom 50%. Unjust, unfair – but can we do anything about it?
There have been demonstrations against immigrants in Dublin, and rumours throughout Ireland of brothels, stealing and violence, all attributed to immigrants. Is there a truth in it that we’re afraid to face?
Finally, the Minister responsible says there are lots more immigrants on their way here and he wants to provide a pathway to citizenship. Many of us rejoice in these people becoming Irish – but would we rejoice equally if an Irish person became a Brit or a Yank? Tricky one, that.

The idea that the rich in Ireland are getting richer at an alarming rate only proves the infection Britain has left in Ireland. They did the same thing in the United States. If Ireland wants to rectify that, they should vote Sinn Fein and they should prepare for a United Ireland.
