TORTURED, SENTENCED TO DEATH, IMPRISONED FOR SEVENTEEN YEARS IN FULL KNOWLEDGE OF THE ESTABLISHMENT – by Donal Kennedy

In 1972  Belfast man Liam Holden, a civilian, innocent of violence, was tortured into confessing to killing a British soldier and condemned to death by a British Court, after which he was imprisoned for seventeen years.

Mr Holden died last year aged 68, a decade after his conviction was quashed.

The High Court in Belfast in March this year found that he had been tortured  by the British army into
making a false confession.

The torture, which included “waterboarding” was the product of untutored anger after a gun-battle,
but of specialist training by professionals.

In 1971 Lord Carrington (Conservative) British “Secretary for Defence” authorised the infliction of torture by British troops in Ireland, as a later Labour Secretary for Northern Ireland, learned from Stormont’s  Unionist Prime Minister, Brian Faulkner. The United Kingdom  denied the use if torture when Ireland brought a case against that state at Strasbourg. The torture continued for years and and its use may still be authorised in Ireland, Britain and other spheres of British government interest. Media in the UK are subject to suppression by “D” notices and other restraints, bribery and nods and winks amongst establishment.

(A subject for another BLOG perhaps?)

Paragraph 4 should read “The Torture …….was NOT the product of untutored anger after a gun-battle but

    of Specialis Training by Professionals.

Another prisoner was tortured over 4 days and nights in a windowless room by relays of RUC men
who had attended courses in torture in Sandhurst, an Academy for British Officers and Gentlemen,
one of whose most distinguished Graduates was . .. Lord Carrington.
