Trump and the DUP: self-inflicted wounds

They’ve put a gag on Trump. Before you start doing handstands around the room, I should add that it’s a gag to stop him from launching attacks on social media. Trump in so many words has called the staff people totally opposed to him.Justice Arthur Engoron has told Trump’s lawyers that any further attacks on his staff were “unacceptable, inappropriate and will not be tolerated under any circumstances.”

As for the charges which see Trump in a New York court in the first place, it seems that financial statements that the Trump Organisation delivered were largely based on self-reported figures. It’s a bit like the British army investigating itself or the PSNI assuring the public by producing bogus figures about the number of Catholics in the force. (No, Virginia, I’m sure the PSNI wouldn’t do a thing like that.)

If the court deems Trump guilty [I’m reliably informed they HAVE found him guilty] they could fine him $250 million and forbid him or his sons from ever trading in New York again. No wonder Trump looks sicker than an overfed parrot these days.

There’s only one downside to all this: the more under attack Trump is, the more people flock to his banner. From this side of the Atlantic, that seems incredible. But let’s not feel self-righteous. Despite the obvious damage the DUP’s refusal to go back to Stormont is doing,  their base is remaining solidly behind them. It’s blind loyalty to the point of self-harm.

Which is, of course, why Sinn Fein is keeping its lip zipped. You don’t want to disturb your opponent when s/he is busy ripping off their arms and legs to show how determined they are not to move an inch.

Blind loyalty afflicts most parties, Jude. I have asked a prominent SF commentator several times for a view on Aoife Moore’s recent book, ‘The Long Haul’ but got no response. A dhath ar bith

Judging by a youtube talk Aoife gave on youtube, she’s pretty critical of the Shinners, so I guess it’s not surprising.
