I’m sure Michelle O’Neill attending that soccer game in Windsor Park recently was a very significant, part of her being a ‘First Minister for all the people”. But something about celebrating such an attendance, any more than Arlene Foster’s attendance at an Ulster Gaelic football final in 2018, and (gasp) Arlene standing for the Irish national anthem -(Michelle did the same for ‘God Save The Queen’) – something about it all makes us look like political pygmies.
Far be it from me to say it shouldn’t happen. Football games are played to be watched, and national anthems are played to be stood to. No doubt when she gets the nerve up, Emma Little-Pengelly will attend a GAA game — but then what? The DUP and the TUV will go on plotting ways to avoid the inevitable change in population here and the political consequences thereof.
We in Ireland have a cake to bake. Should we really get awfy excited and grateful when one of the cooks produces the icing? Time to get the main ingredients sorted, guys.

Thank you, Paul…
I trust Michelle and the Republican leadership in whatever moves they make to bring Irish unity and British withdrawal closer. There is peace now and going to your political opponent’s cultural expression is a good move. I will still be a Republican and so will Michelle. The process for Irish unity will probably be rather convoluted. Steady as she goes. Who knows what way it will arrive, a county at a time? God knows.
