The latest figures from Ukraine saying that over 30,000 Ukrainians have died in the conflict so far. There is a belief that an awful lot more Russians have died also. So what to do? You’ll get a lot of suggestions – fight to the last man; if Russia takes Ukraine, Latvia and other states are next. Is that right? It sound very like the claims back in the 1970s that if South Vietnam fell, there would be a domino effect – all sorts of states around would begin to go Communist. Thousands of American lives were sacrificed based on that belief. And it was rubbish.
A friend of mine (former pupil, actually, which means he probably reads while whispering the words aloud) has claimed there are three tribes in Ireland – the south, the nationalist north and the unionist north. Is he right? Should we even be talking about ‘tribes’? And is there anything we can do about it?
Sorry, but we dealt with these two matters in such depth and with such eloquence, we didn’t get on to other matters. But sure isn’t it quality, not quantity that matters?
