In September 1960 the United Nations’ General Assembly President, Ireland’s Frederick
Boland, broke his gavel trying to impose order following an angry tirade by the Soviet
Union’s Nikita Khrushev who had brandished a shoe while banging his (Khruschev’s)
desk.
The Soviet leader’s behaviour was considered “Infra Dig” at the time but it was that
of an urbane cosmopolitan gentleman scholar compared with the behaviour of Israeli
representatives at the International Criminal Court at the Hague and the United Nations
Security Council in New York recently.
I watched some of this behaviour in real time on Al Jazeera and heard one incident
reported.
At the Hague two Israeli Lawyers appear to have been extremely economical with the
truth in their prolix submissions, and accused the South Africans of being allies of Hamas. After the Israeli submissions, the South Africans, speaking to Al Jazeera, convinced me that the Israeli submission was nonsense,
Earlier I had watched from the UN Security Council in New York a creature purporting
to be the Israeli Ambassador to that august body.
Jews have excelled in learning, literature, all the sciences, music, philosophy, art and
all mankind’s greatest achievements.
But the specimen posing as a diplomat appeared like someone expelled from kindergarten and never exposed to education or a code of conduct of any kind. He was boastful and abusive and the content of his contribution suggested that he never had potty training.
At a subsequent visit to the Security Council, I’m told he shredded the United
Nations Declaration of Human Rights.
I guess I may now know why Jesus wept.
Well said Donal. This weekend the Taoiseach was taking on the President of Israel, and the Tánaiste was visiting Lebanon. You’d think there was plenty to do at home.
