I understand that there was a competition in the 1930s for the most sensational headline. I don’t think it was in THE IRISH TIMES, but I wouldn’t rule it out. The winner was ARCHDUKE FERDINAND FOUND ALIVE: WAR UNNECESSARY!
In FEBRUARY 1933, in an Editorial, The Irish Times warned its readers of the wailing and gnashing of teeth which would engulf Ireland if Fianna Fail, which had come to power, with Labour support, in 1932, were to return to office in the General Election just called. Fianna Fail triumphed in 1933 and ruled following subsequent elections until 1948. Fianna Fail abolished the constraints imposed on the State and its citizens by Britain, fought and won an Economic War, introduced statutory holidays for employees, built high quality housing for former slum dwellers, established many industries, attracting foreign investors, established Bord na Mona and Aer Lingus,
On Fianna Fail Advice the electorate established a Sovereign, Democratic State republican in essence, but not so labelled.
A suitable headline might read: REPUBLIC ESTABLISHED: IRISH TIMES UNNECESSARY!
IN MARCH I933, in an Editorial, “HERR HITLER’S WAY” the IRISH TIMES
exulted in the Nazis coming to power in Berlin. They conceded the fact that
Hitler was a rough diamond but enthused at the brutality dealt to the left,.
“YOU CAN’T MAKE OMELETTES WITH OUT BREAKING EGGS” was the
Thugs’ slogan used by the paper.
While the Editorial was being written in Dublin, in Berlin Frank Foley of Britain’s
MI6 and GUY Liddell of MI5 were, on the invitation of the Nazis, transcribing
the names of thousands of communists and student socialists seized by their
hosts. The venue was Horst Wessel Haus seized from the Communists and renamed after a Nazi Thug. In the days when the Brits were transcribing this intelligence they could hear the screams arisng from the making of Anglo/British omelettes.
One of the Socialist Students, Eric Hobbawm aged 16 escaped to Britain. Until
his death 69 years later in 2012 his mail was opened and his teephone bugged
by British spooks.
I wrote a BLOG here “In Praise of Foley?” which you might enjoy.
Under Fianna Fail, the Irish State was spared the carnage of the Second World
War, which, like the First was the product of British Imperial policy. Like Mae
West’s Diamonds, GOODNESS HAD NOTHING TO DO with such policy
To give Mae her due, she was not, like the Brits, a hypocrite.
It is fashionable in West British circles to disparage De Valera’s consistently
rational and ethical politics and those of his colleagues.
THE IRISH TIMES has learned nothing. But it is good for sensational and
false assertions.
Such as that of the Jesuit Professor Seamus Murphy that the duellist Daniel
O’Connell never shot a man.
And the current nonsense that the war of Independence was not necessary
as Britain was showering us with freedom.
So we should be grateful for Dame Britannia’s Golden Rain?
A great title for a pornagraphic work of art.
