Over the weekend, a garda was killed by a motor-bike while he was doing a road speed check.The Taoiseach praised his courage and dedication to duty. Would it have been better to make sure gardaí intervening like this were doing so from a safe position? And why the hell do motor bikes and cars get constructed so they can go at speeds that break the law? Time for some major interventions.
Two teenage schoolboys were drowned in Lough Swilly, not far from where Pat lives. Again, were their deaths necessary. The school curriculum is often mulled over. Isn’t there a compellng argument that ‘Life skills’ including ‘Life-protecting skills’ such as swimming?
And is there a greater shame for the south of Ireland than the Occupied Territories bill? In 2018 Senator Frances Black brought it forward, to end Irish trade and services with people responsible for the illegality of the Occupied Territories in the Middle East. Seven years later it’s still not passed, with government spokesmen making noises about its legality. It now looks like it won’t get passed this side of summer. Meanwhile, every day, Palestinians are being illegally evicted from their homes and anyone protesting being shot. We have no right to talk about the lack of shame with Trump while Irish people piddle about, unable to pass a law to save oppressed people from violence and death. We don’t end with a joke but sometimes the world is too grim for giggling.
