Micheål Martin is not feeling well. “I am deeply shocked and horrified that the Israeli Defence Forces today open fire on a. group of diplomats visiting the town of Jenin”. Simon Harris is also feeling upset: “”I am shocked and appalled at reports that the IDF fired shots in the vicinity of a visit to Jenin today by a group of diplomats, including two Irish diplomats based in Ramallah”.
And sure why wouldn’t they be? These were perfectly respectable diplomats visiting the area, and the IDF opened fire and either missed or aimed to miss.
I’m sure that both men also reacted to the event in Gaza two days ago, when Al-Awda Hospital said that among the dead in the Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza, after an Israeli strike, were a woman and a young girl. The strike also wounded 18 others, mostly children, said the hospital, which received the casualties.
And Micheál and Simon almost certainly were horrified and spoke out when they heard that 219 journalists had been killed in Gaza since October 7, 2023. And they. were almost certainly denouncing from the roof of the Dáil when they heard that at least 12,300 Palestinian youngsters had been killed in the enclave in the last four months alone.
That’s one thing you can say for the Taoiseach and the Tánaiste – all human life is equally valuable, and that’s why they’ve not been mincing their words when talking daily about the Israel slaughter going on every day since 2023.
A hierarchy of victims or potential victims? Perish the thought.
