I lit  a candle this evening
For my father’s birthday 27.9.1927
It burned brightly this night.
Almost a contradiction in terms
And yet I’m one of those Presbyterians
Who has no quarrel with candles.
Who has no time
For political traditions.

If I have any ambition
It would be to rhett out this place.
Of dark political ambitions
Religious antpathy
And the ignorance of the many
Uninterested in education.
In thral to their mobile phones
Upwardly mobile
In a world turned upside down.

I lit a candle for my dad this day.
A Presbyterian partly educated
At Blackrock College, Dublin.
Uncomfortable at Coleraine Inst.
A day Border in weekly digs
In from Armoy, just a boy
Where his father managed the bank.

Looking for something better
But not a go getter.
Just a decent bloke, from a bygone age
Of decency, manners, grammar
And the beauty of a broad vocabulary.
With each word enjoyed and launched
From a gentle tongue.

I miss him still, I always will
This son of Donegal.
