Well now. Gerry Adams is to give a press conference in Belfast at 3.30 pm today – I doubt if B(ritish)BC Raidio Uladh will carry it live. It comes in the aftermath of lunch-time news that the claimants – those taking the case against Gerry A – had decided to withdraw their claims and end the trial. There’s an agreement between both sides that they’ll pay their own legal costs – somewhere around £120,000. Barristers don’t come cheap, you see. The fact that the judge had given indications of heading towards a rejection of the claimants’ case may have encouraged them to strike a deal with Gerry and Co, in case they’d have wound up having to fork out for ALL legal fees.
There are several points here. One is, the claimants apparently had their legal costs funded in part by crowd-funding, but also by a number of bigger donation. Right. Will we hear who these bigger donors were, and why they put down their money to snare Gerry? Don’t hold your breath.
Another question is, where is DUP leader Gavin Robinson? HImself and Gregory Campbell were over in London in connection with the case, and Gavin was talking about how ‘seismic’ it’d be if Gerry were found guilty. Now that the case has folded, will that be seismic? And did Gavin and Gregory fly to London using their own funds, or was the public paying for that too?
There’ll be a few sore hearts in East Belfast tonight.
Maybe someone will take a case against some very high profile members of the DUP, who instigated the Ulster Resistance ( red berets and all) back in the day? We know who they are, it was all over the local news at the time? The guns they imported were later used to murder dozens of Catholics. Or maybe any surviving members of various British governments who sanctioned the murders of yes, you’ve guessed it, Catholics? Or maybe people will accept that the war is over? As to your points about the cost of travel etc and whether the taxpayer funded it….. I’d hazard a guess they did.
The naivety/stupidity of launching a case they could never win was definitely Seismic!
