Trump postpones another deadline

Markets used to move on earnings, wars, harvests and the odd central banker’s eyebrow twitch. Now they seem to move on whether Donald Trump wakes up feeling hawkish before or after breakfast.

Threaten strikes on Iranian power plants — stocks tumble, the dollar flexes like it’s back in the gym. Pause the strikes for five days — sterling rebounds, gilts sigh with relief, and somewhere a trader spills oat milk on a Bloomberg terminal while trying to reverse three panic trades and a life decision.

Is Trump personally making money from all this? That’s the trillion-dollar question — literally, if you include derivatives. There’s no public proof he’s day-trading from the Oval Office with one hand while composing geopolitical ultimatums with the other. But the optics are… cinematic. Markets convulse, currencies wobble, and volatility does the cha-cha while political messaging arrives in instalments like a suspense series nobody asked for but everyone is binge-watching anyway.

Sterling’s bounce is less a victory lap and more a nervous stretch. It had dropped earlier as investors fled to the dollar — the financial equivalent of grabbing the last lifeboat while arguing about who packed the biscuits. Then came the postponement, and suddenly risk appetite returned like a guest who’d dramatically announced they were leaving the party but couldn’t find their coat.

Meanwhile, bond yields performed interpretive dance: up when fear spiked, down when calm was briefly declared. Traders priced in rate hikes, priced them out again, then priced in therapy.
