PAT+JUDE TALK ABOUT CONFIRMATION &NON-BELIEVERS, LEARNING AS GAEILGE, , & 3 SEPARIST GOVERNMENTS

This is the confirmation season – kids get all dressed up, parents kneel and watch, a  tear in their eye. Does this make sense, if the parents aren’t in fact active Catholics?

Learning Irish appears to have done a major turn-around. When Pat & I were at secondary school a million years ago, we detested the language and couldn’t wait to be done with it. Now we both are in favour of the signs of revival. The problem isn’t that parents don’t want their children taught through Irish; the problem is, there aren’t nearly enough Irish medium schools around, especially at secondary level.

There’s a by-election taking place in Galway, and the TV presenter asked the candidates if they were fluent in Irish – as was the woman who vacated the seat , Catherine Connolly. Should we be concerned that they’ve got at best a cupla focal,  or do other things matter more.

The recent elections in Wales and Scotland mean that  the biggest party in Wales, Scotland and NEI is a separist party. Is that just window dressing, or will the parties press to remove themselves from behind Mother Britain’s skirts?
