It’s important that we make rational decisions, especially in matters that involve huge sums of money and the possible loss of life.
If we were faced with some crisis in our family finances, we’d not just concede the need for the rational, we’d demand it.
Yet we shrug our shoulders and sigh when we hear that Britain will spend £15 billion on nuclear warheads over next four year. The replacement of one nuclear submarine by a new, improved nuclear submarines will cost somewhere between £31 -£41 billion.
If we were to assess this spending rationally, we’d probably ask “Would using these nuclear armaments make sense?” The rational answer to that must be No – once nuclear warfare begins we all will perish, along with our children. So maybe better be rational and save some money for the NHS. After all, even Britain’s enemies don’t want a nuclear war.
So let’s assume we stick with non-nuclear weapons – why is everywhere, including the EU, planning to spend really big? Well, over the next ten years, the plan is to spend £50 billion on non-nuclear weapons.
Who will they be used against? The polliticians would say “Russia”, although I don’t remember Putin announcing an attack on London.Or planning to. Has he been asked? Considering how tough the fight is in Ukraine, why would Putin want to attack Britian for?
And it’s not just Britain. All through the western world, including the EU, it’s considered reasonable that more money must be spent on weapons, since “we live in a dangerous world”.
We contribute to the building of nuclear weapons that cannot be used, we warn against an enemy for whom it would be nonsense to attack Britain.
So the taxpayer in Ireland, the UK, the EU , the US are coughing up money to protect us against an enemy which remains unknown.
That’s your money and mine. Billion after unquestioning billion. The military-industrail complex must be doing jigs of delight.
This sad, passive, mad approach to the future should not and cannot be allowed to go on. It’s known as M A D – mutually assured destruction – and we’re mad to contribute our hard-earned money to imposible weapons.
