Over the last few days we’ve had confirmed what many believed to be the case on two topics: the FAI doesn’t give a shit about suffering in Gaza, and Micheál Martin doesn’t give a shit about irish reunification.
The FAI first: the FAI has decided not to boycott upcoming games against Israel. If they did, they claim, they would face sanctions, there might be unrest in the home game of Ireland v Israel, and the Republic of Ireland might face financial sanctions. Well done, lads. Never mind those tens of thousands of Gazan lives pulverised out of existence by Israel: we’re not going to risk being fined. First things first.
Micheál Martin: the Taoiseach and his party have voted down a Sinn Féin motion that the government produce a green paper on Irish unity and a citizens’ assembly to hear all views. Micheál Martin brought it all back to euro, and emphasised how much the South was donating to projects in the North under his Shared Island project. In other words, northern unionists will be happy to receive financial aid but we must be careful not to alarm them or do anything which might even hint at Irish unity.
I would say that the FAI and Micheál are insulting the Irish people. There is no doubt that soccer supporters, like every other group in the north, are appalled at the suffering in Gaza, and wish there was something they could do. Well, here it is, guys. Pity the FAI figured that some loss of revenue might hurt the FAI. Likewise Micheál Martin: he is terrified that the unionists might take umbrage at any action that might even hint at Irish reunification.And so he throttles to death the slightest notion of even considering the notion of ending partition.
Just to iterate: the FAI don’t give a flying monkey’s fuck about suffering in Gaza, and Micheål doesn’t really give a flying fuck about Irish unity.
Ah Ireland: you’re still producing political cowards and gombeens whose only principle is how best to fumble in the greasy till.

As regards to the FAI,, a disgraceful decision.
There’s appalling suffering going on all over the world Jude. Should Ireland tell the American companies who employ thousands here to sling their hook because they bombed Iran? Why single out a Jewish country?
As for a united Ireland, the referendum can’t even be held without the express permission of the Northern Ireland Secretary of State, i.e. a British politician. A condition which Sinn Fein willingly signed up to as part of the Good Friday Agreement. So much for self determination, more Sinn Fein spin.
