The FAI makes Ed Sheeran look like a fearsome opponent of Israel. Sheeran has failed to follow the lead of his band and supporting acts, who have spoken out at gigs against the genocide in Gaza. He finally has come up with a milk-and-water complaint about how October 7, 2023 was a terrible atrocity but that Israel has over-reacted. Oh wow, Ed.
The FAI hasn’t had the guts to make what would be a simple decision: don’t play any of its scheduled games against Israel. The Republic of Ireland manager instead has tried to make black white: “We are not playing with genocide, we are playing against genocide. We are playing against Israel; we are not playing with Israel.” That was the Ireland manager Heimir Hallgrimsson, trying to tell us black is really white.
For his pains. Israel responded by accusing him of “stupidity, ignorance and hypocrisy”.
Well in a way Israel is right: Hallgrimsson pretended he was standing up to Israel, whereas he is in fact bending the knee before Israel, for which he got the kick in the teeth as listed above.
If Ireland is going to boycott Israel in sport, they should just do it. Have nothing to do with that counry. Should any organisation wish to sanction the FAI for so doing, let them; but let’s know what sort of action they’d propose to express their distaste for the slaughter of well over 70,000 innocent Palestinians.
Every Irish player should simply refuse to play.
How in the name of God can some people wring their hands over Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, while passing by, eyes averted, when Israel displays its brutal arrogance?
