MORNING HAS BROKEN by Harry McAvinchey

morning

I didn’t wait up for the result. It’ll be there all right  in the morning .I’ll sleep on it . When I wake up. Scotland will either be part of a union dominated by a Westminster government,or will , as they used to say in the serials..with one mighty leap be forever a  free people, governing their own destiny.Promises have been made by Westminster’s governments many times before which have trickled away as sand through dry fingers..

I woke as usual .It’s been foggy this week .Well not really too foggy . A kind of misty stillness that has dissipated each afternoon into an hour or so of late ,light-hearted sunshine. I felt a little like I did as a child awaiting Christmas. The waiting anticipation was almost as good as the coming day itself. So why rush things . There’s nothing quite like a gentle tease .A mental seduction. It’s always better than the consummation. I could wait another while….patience is its own reward.I casually had my shower , shaved without spilling any blood, duked in the mirror sideways to see if any of  my hair had fallen out during that dreamtime . It hadn’t and I  dressed as usual .

It is getting cooler so I slipped a navy blue jumper on to put the empty wine bottle in the recycle bin and took my first breath of air of the day.I love that early morning air. I switched on the kettle and while waiting for the tea to brew ,I finally allowed myself off the tease and switched on the radio. Apparently, two hours earlier the majority of Scots had finally decided to remain unfree. Just after 6.00 am, Friday the nineteenth of September 2014 . People will speak of it in years to come. Pundits and politicians soon filled the airwaves with their stories of defeat and victory.

I thought of some little family on a distant Hebredian village and how their morning would look to them.  If I hadn’t switched that radio on would Scotland’s fate still be hanging in that balance forever? The tea still tasted the same as it did yesterday morning .I always love that first pot of tea. It’s the best of the day..
