DANIEL O’CONNELL – KING OF THE HUMBUGGERS? by Donal Kennedy

Recently “SIGHING FOR  A BRACE OF DUELLING PISTOLS”  I took issue with some commentators who invoke Daniel O’Connell’s name to further their own perverse, if not perverted, political agendas.

The late Sean O’Faolain wrote a most readable book on O’Connell called “King of the Beggars.” It might be appropriate to pen another called “King of the Humbuggers” .  I’m told that in his lifetime O’Connell was offered the Kingship of the Belgians, but that he declined it. Otherwise Belgium’s highest decoration today would be named after King Daniel, rather than King Leopold of Congo Infamy.

Of all the humbugs to invoke O’Connell, none can be sillier than Father Seumas Murphy SJ of Loyola University in California, who tells us that Daniel O’Connell never shot anybody.

Not only did O’Connell shoot John d’Esterre dead in a duel in 1815, but he had as his Second, the noted duellest John “Fireballs” MacNamara from County Clare. Father Murphy has earned the soubriquet “Writeballs” Murphy, Prince of the Humbuggers.”

I write to inform, to amuse and to irritate readers. I don’t knowingly misinform and would welcome correction if I make a mistaken assertion. If my arguments cannot be sustained from my premises I’d like advice. So please, please indicate that you like or dislike what I’ve written. If you can add to my observations please do.

Whether one agrees or disagrees with Donal (and I have done both) we can all agree that he is never dull.

A link to the relevant comment by Fr Murphy would be helpful.

Don’t know how to provide link. If another reader can I’d be grateful.

        Donal
I’m no expert, but if it is on the internet you an copy and paste a link from the address bar(url).
Or just tell us where and when (tv, radio, newspaper?) he said it.

Apparently O’Connell was challenged to that duel and didn’t seek it out. Also he was so remorseful that he paid an income to D’Esterre’s daughter for thirty years.

I’ve a bigger problem with his sectarian championing of religiously segregated university system in Ireland. And he made poor Thomas Davis cry. He sounds a lot like some SDLP types (and a few Shinners though they’re sneakier about it) who seem to hate the idea of integrated education more than they love the idea of a united Ireland.

You might be opposed to integrated education and in favour of a united Ireland – they’re not mutually exclusive.

I’m just judging them by the time they appear to give to each issue Jude. I’m sure I hear the SDLP arguing against integrated education more than I here them arguing for a united Ireland. Might just be my prejudice.

I think you hear the SDLP arguing over the colour of Hillary Clinton’s underwear oftener than you hear them arguing for a united Ireland…

“United but separate” could be the rallying cry!
